Hall High School prepares all students to be educated, responsible citizens who contribute collaboratively, independently, and innovatively to a dynamic global community.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed as an introduction to human development as it relates to the family life cycle. In particular, this course will focus on the developing individual within the context of the family system and the changes that occur in family systems over time. Students will take part in classroom instruction as well as participate in 40 hours of internship that can include but is not limited to guest speakers, assigned observations and interaction with children at the elementary, middle school and high school level as well as the elderly. The internship will be spread out over the course of the school year and will take place during and after school hours. Students will be required to journal their internship experiences. Students taking this course are generally interested in pursuing a college major in the areas of education, family studies and allied health careers. This course is an undergraduate general education requirement for the above stated majors at the University of Connecticut. Students who successfully obtain an average of C (73 or higher) will be eligible for 3 credits from the University of Connecticut. All students are required to fill out the Early College Experience application and pay the University of Connecticut the appropriate fees to receive credit. In addition, the student will receive 1 credit from Hall High School.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Develop an understanding of individual and family development within the context of the family system within society. Gain an understanding of the major theories and research in lifespan development. Have a basic understanding of tasks families perform throughout various developmental stages. Be able to recognize contextual factors that influence individual and family development as well as appreciate the diversity that exists both within and between families. Apply various theoretical perspectives to real life situations of families today through experiential opportunities afforded through the internship component. Be exposed to and understand relevant research on human and family development across the lifespan. Understand the systemic interaction of individual, family and social influences on human development across the lifespan.

PLEASE NOTE: No student will be exempt from the midterm & final assessment because college credit is being awarded for the successful completion of this course. CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK/PROJECTS/JOURNALS: Assignments and due dates will be posted on the white board in the front of the room. All assignments to be handed in must be typed. You may print them back to back to save paper. EXCEPTIONS may include but are not limited to: Work done individually or as a group in class unless it is part of a project. Worksheets that have been handed out that have blanks to fill in. Assignments are considered “On Time” if they have been handed in either physically and/or electronically by 11:59pm on the date the assignment is due. Assignments not handed in on time are subject to a minimum of a 7 pt. per day grade reduction and will only be accepted within 7 calendar days after due date. If I have to print the assignment, you will lose 5 pts. If there is no Rubric or cover sheet attached, you will lose 5 pts. Chapter notes and key terms are due at the beginning of class and are subject to a 50% grade reduction if they are turned in the next day. After that, no credit. Proper use of grammar, punctuation and spelling is expected as this is a college level course. Make sure you use Spell Check AND Grammar Check!!!
CLASS PARTICIPATION AND ATTITUDE: It is expected that you will come to class prepared to participate every day. This includes a notebook for taking notes, your book on days when it will be used as a resource in class, a writing instrument and any assignments that may be due. Participation includes: Actively taking notes during class Active involvement in class discussions Being prepared for class on a daily basis Handing in assignments on time Attendance – you can’t participate if you are not in class Participation does not include: Carrying on personal conversations while the teacher or your classmates are speaking. Using your cell phone for any purpose. Violation of the Academic Honor Code Please note that Attitude involves: Being respectful to the teacher, your classmates and any guests that may be in class. Speaking to the teacher privately about personal issues and concerns at a mutually convenient time. Doing what you are asked to do without complaining. Putting in the time and effort required of a college course
INTERNSHIP: Students are expected to: Complete approximately 8-10 hours of internship per quarter. Make contact before visiting any internship site to set-up an appropriate time to visit. Be responsible and show up at the internship sites on time on the day you signed up to be there. Conduct themselves in a professional manner during all internship site visits. Dress in a professional manner for all internship participation. Bring the journal assignment and a writing instrument with them to the observation. Make sure to have the adult in charge sign to verify your attendance. No signature means NO CREDIT. Provide transportation for student initiated observations. MAKE-UP WORK: Students are responsible for contacting the teacher to find out what work they missed when they were absent. YOU are also responsible for arranging to make-up assignments when absences are excused. Students who are not present on lab days will be required to make up the lab time when it is convenient for the lab instructor. Any work missed due to absence for athletics, drama, music, field trips, etc. is due the day you return. This includes turning in projects, homework and taking tests and quizzes. All make-up work should be completed within a reasonable amount of time to be determined by me. No credit will be given for class participation or assignments missed due to unexcused absences or cuts. LATE WORK: Late work should not be confused with make-up work. It relates to assignments that for whatever reasons YOU have chosen not complete on time. Grade reduction policies are addressed above under CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK/PROJECTS/JOURNALS. Assignments may turned in within 7 calendar days after due date WITH PENALTIES.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Students in this course are subject to the Academic Honor Code policies of West Hartford Public Schools AND the University of Connecticut. Please make sure you are aware of these policies.
TECHNOLOGY USE POLICY: Please make sure you are familiar with the Acceptable Use Policy for Technology that is stated in your student handbook.
ATTENDANCE: All students should be familiar with the attendance policy as stated in your planners. Some highlights you should be aware of: 1. Students are expected to be in the classroom when the bell rings. Lateness to class without a pass will result in an unexcused tardy. 2. Three (3) unexcused tardies to class will result in an unexcused absence and an office detention. 3. Students who come to class more than 20 minutes into the class period with a pass from a teacher or staff member will be assigned an excused absence. 4. Students who miss more than 15 minutes of a class without a pass from a teacher or staff member will be assigned an unexcused absence and referred to the Attendance Coordinator. 5. Phone calls will be made to parents at the second unexcused absence. 6. Students who have four(4) unexcused absences or twelve(12) excused absences for the semester will receive a grade but no credit and will need to go through the appeals process.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT: All electronic devices including but not limited to cell phones, beepers, pagers, CD players, MP3 players, etc. are to be turned off and placed out of sight for the duration of the class period. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.
AVAILABILITY FOR QUESTIONS OR EXTRA HELP: First semester I am usually available Per. 2 & 6 in my office (E112) to answer any questions or address any problems. I will be in the gym hallway Per. 8. Second semester I will be in my room Per. 1, 2 & 6. I am generally available after school most days until 3:30 unless I have faculty or department meetings or a personal commitment. Introduction to Individual and Family Development Participation Contract
The course expectations for Introduction to Individual and Family Development have been thoroughly explained including assignment expectations and timelines for work. This is a college level course offered through the Early College Experience Program at the University of Connecticut for articulated credit for HDFS 1070.
As a student in this class, I will be responsible for: Completing coursework that is acceptable at the university level. Actively participating in the internship and other experiences provided by my teacher. I understand that some hours will be completed during the school day but there will be hours that I must complete on my own time. Providing transportation to student initiated observations. Attending the Spring Conference at UCONN.
