1 2 Session 1 – Prayer Lay Renewal Weekend Prayer Basics
1. Authentic prayer involves asking
In the parable of the Pharisee and tax collector; the Pharisee asks for nothing. If you don’t think you need God’s help; you need an attitude adjustment.
2. Authentic prayer involves believing The apostles failed to heal the demon possessed boy because their faith was too small. Faith makes a difference. Three characteristics of answered prayer are: Communicate with God about everything. Choose to Believe in God’s love and power. In relation to prayer, faith is a verb. Pray bigger than your faith. Discipline yourself in mind, body, and spirit.
3. Saying an authentic public prayer The most common fear among Americans is public speaking. Authentic public prayer is personal – not professional
Preparation Invite the group to pray. Remember Who you’re talking to. Visualize yourself in the throne room. Ask yourself, “Why am I here?
Salutation Jesus addressed His prayers to the Father. We should never pray a religion neutral prayer.
Petition The church should pray as much or more for kingdom needs as personal needs.
Benediction The Bible has many benedictions that are seldom used today. Don’t be afraid to pray a short public prayer.

5 6 Session 2 – Prayer Lay Renewal Weekend Group Prayer Techniques
1. Scriptural Meditation Lets God speak first. In scriptural meditation, scripture is read at the beginning of prayer. Reasons to use scriptural meditation: It pulls the group’s attention away from the world. It’s scriptural. It helps them focus their attention on the things of God. It let’s God speak first.
Suggestions for picking a verse: It can be one verse or a short passage. It can be related to the purpose of the meeting. It does not need to be familiar. It does need to be easy to read and understand.
2. Prayer by Suggestion This is a time of silent guided prayer. Reasons to use Prayer by Suggestion: It involves people who don’t normally pray out loud. It helps people pray about personal needs. It helps the group pray in agreement.
Guidelines for using Prayer by Suggestion: Suggest one thing at a time. Remind them to pray silently. Pray about it yourself so you’ll know how long to wait. Don’t be afraid of the silence.
The ACTS acrostice: A – Adoration C – Confession T – Thanksgiving S – Supplication
7 3. Topical Praying Rules for Topical Praying: Each person prays short prayers about one topic at a time. Each person prays as often as they want. The group continues praying about the same topic until someone introduces another topic. Each Topical Prayer is part of the whole and doesn’t need a benediction.
Ways to help others learn Topical Praying: Prayer Walking is Topical Praying in motion Combine Prayer by Suggestion with Topical Praying

10 Session 3 – Prayer Lay Renewal Weekend The Great Commission of Prayer
No Purer Motive In all areas of my life; do I want what Jesus wants? The lost saved (vs. 11) The fallen reconciled (vs. 15) The weak protected (vs. 6) God sees your problem as His opportunity.
No Greater Ambition Are you willing to do the hard work of prayer? Many people think God is like a fairy god mother. God invites you to: Join Him Pray it through
No Stronger Fellowship The greatest prayer promises apply to at least two people praying together in agreement. The word agreement is ‘symphony’ in Greek. You need a prayer partner. Things prayer partners need to do: Read Scripture. Pray topically. Listen for Jesus’ prayer. Share your insights.
No Higher Power The ‘higher power’ comes when Jesus joins the prayer partnership and becomes the dominant member. When we pray this way; we will see: His will His power In His time
11 12 Note: The following page is a handout that presents the points as a series of questions to ask yourself when praying about a difficult problem. If possible, please prepare it as a second handout for this session. It should be on a half sheet of paper.

15 16 Session 4 – Prayer Lay Renewal Weekend Talking With God – His Ultimate Goal, Your Ultimate Need
1. God’s Ultimate Goal – Talking With His Children The ultimate prize of salvation is a conversational relationship with God. Sin caused people to stop communicating with God. God never stopped talking with people.
2. Your Ultimate Need – Talking With Your Heavenly Father It’s impossible to ‘pray without ceasing’ if it only means talking to God.
3. Begin the Adventure Believe that a conversational relationship with God is possible. Little Samuel said, “Speak Lord for Your servant is listening.” Be willing to hear God say things you may not want to hear. Almost all Christians have heard or felt God speak, but retreated into the safety of religion.
The 5-5-5 Challenge. Fill out the enclosed commitment card and be prepared to go forward at the conclusion of this morning’s worship service when Rev. Snow presents the 5-5-5 Challenge.
