The Great Gatsby Chapter 1 Vocabulary
This assignment is about more than the finding and memorizing the definitions of words. It is about experiencing the complexity of language. It is about the multiple meanings and forms of a single word. It is about synonyms and connotations. It is meant to teach you a writing technique enhances your vocabulary by using a thesaurus skillfully and successfully. If you do this activity yourself, you will discover a world of words that cannot be defined by a dictionary. All you need to do is follow the directions, check out the plethora of examples, and complete the chart by cutting and pasting from Microsoft Word.
1. Find the indicated number of DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS for each WORD in COLUMN 1 2. Use MICROSOFT WORD first, then, if you need more help, go to THESAURUS.COM and/or DICTIONARY.COM 3. I think the computer will serve you best because you can simply COPY AND PASTE the DIFFERENT DEFINITIONS in COLUMN 2 (SKIP THIS DEFINITION is according to my Microsoft Word program; I guess we will find out if they are the same) 4. The PART OF SPEECH is already done for you in COLUMN 3 5. In COLUMN 4, record ALL the DIFFERENT FORMS of the word and the PART OF SPEECH each form represents 6. In COLUMN 5, find and record the indicated number of UNKNOWN SYNONYNMS FOR EACH ORIGINAL WORD FROM COLUMN 1. You get to choose which ones, so look for INTERESTING, “COOL” SYNONYMS. Okay? You click on the ORIGINAL WORD in COLUMN 1, and from that list, you select the stated number of SYNONYMS that you DO NOT KNOW, or that you BARELY KNOW, or that you just find “COOL” AND INTERESTING.
7. Then, in COLUMN 6, find and record a WELL-KNOWN SYNONYM to define each NEW AND UNKNOWN SYNONYM IN COLUMN 5 So, you click on the NEW AND UNKNOWN SYNONYM IN COLUMN 5, and from THAT LIST OF SYNONYMS, you select ANOTHER SYNONYNM that you DO KNOW and UNDERSTAND. Okay? The idea is that you need to have a synonym you do understand now to define the synonym that you don’t understand (yet). THIS IS IMPORTANT, so, PLEASE, if you have any questions or just don’t “get it,” call or text 714-350-6625 okay?!
8. Finally, in COLUMN 7, determine the CONNOTATION of the ORIGINAL WORD from COLUMN 1
