Dr. Tamarelli is a bicoastal angel investor in early stage technology businesses in the New Jersey and San Francisco Bay areas. He serves on a number of boards of directors and advisory boards. As a CEO, private company owner, and public company officer his 39 years experience have encompassed general management, entrepreneurship, new ventures, mergers and acquisitions, advanced materials, electronics, environmental protection, specialty chemicals, energy conservation, technology transfer, and other business, scientific and policy areas.
His primary business activity is as a professional venture capital angel investor. He specializes in value-added investments in early stage technology businesses. He has made about 70 investments in over 30 companies since 2000, sometimes serving on boards of directors. These investments have been in advanced materials, electronics, information technology, and health care. He is also a limited partner in 4 venture capital funds active in these areas. Dr. Tamarelli is founding chairman of Jumpstart New Jersey Angel Network and a member of the Band of Angels in Silicon Valley.
In 1983 he purchased Dock Resins Corporation in a leveraged buyout and successfully grew its revenues and profits as Chairman, CEO and sole owner. In 1997 he sold the company at a significant gain and remained CEO until 2000 when he became Chairman Emeritus. He was employed by Engelhard Corporation from 1970 to 1983 (Senior Vice President), and previously by Exxon Corporation. He managed $billion groups of worldwide businesses and also had senior management responsibility for corporate strategic planning and corporate R&D. Before joining Exxon, Dr. Tamarelli served as a captain in the U.S. Army and as a professor at Carnegie-Mellon University. He has BS, MS, and PhD degrees in engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University and an MBA in marketing and international business from New York University.
Dr. Tamarelli has held numerous leadership positions in industry, community, and civic organizations. These include Chairman of the Synthetic Organic Chemicals Association; Chairman of the Chemical Industry Council of New Jersey; Chairman of the Metropolitan New York Paint and Coatings Association, and President of the Linden Industrial Association. He served as a member and Committee Chair of USEPA's National Advisory Council on Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT). He has also served in numerous other national and state governmental advisory positions, including the U.S. Department of Energy’s Chemical Industry Executive Steering Group.
He is Chairman Emeritus of the Union County Alliance, a regional public/private economic development organization, for which he received an award for strategic vision and his role as a founder. He has been a member of Carnegie Mellon University’s Advisory Council and the advisory board for Kean Universitry’s New Jersey Center for Science and Technology Education. The Chemical Education Foundation awarded him its prestigious Vanguard Award for industry leadership. He is Chairman of the Joseph Priestley Society association of senior molecular science industry executives. He is a board member of the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey.
