Düsseldorf/Hanover/CeBIT, 8 March 2014 – Vodafone proved just how convenient contactless payments with NFC-enabled can be in a number of German cities last week. Both major retail chains such as Starbucks, Douglas and the Kamps-Backstuben bakeries and smaller stores have introduced NFC (Near Field Communication) technology at their checkouts. Düsseldorf-based Vodafone today announced the German-wide launch of its digital payment service, Vodafone Wallet, and the first Vodafone

SmartPass payment card. More than ten smartphones from various manufacturers can already be used by Vodafone customers at currently around 36,500 acceptance points in Germany for contactless payments, and there are as many as 1.3 million acceptance points in Europe. In addition to its pure payment function, the digital wallet will soon have its first customer rewards and membership cards. At CeBIT, Vodafone will be demonstrating how easy adding ADAC, Payback and Lufthansa Miles&More cards to the wallet is, thereby underlining its commitment to the development of secure mobile applications in the German market.

“We’re playing a crucial and leading role in the sector by driving the development of mobile payments in Germany. Our customers can already use Vodafone Wallet and SmartPass to make payments throughout Germany“, said

Frank Vahldiek, Director Consumer Services & Innovations at Vodafone Germany. “We’ll soon be adding a new key function to our digital payment service so that our customers can include the first customer cards in their Vodafone Wallet. To speed up the development of mobile payment options and other NFC-based services, Vodafone concluded a partnership agreement a few days ago with

TREVICA, a subsidiary of MasterCard Europe. The objective of this cooperation is to develop a central platform as interface between network operators and banks where digital payment products can be made available to customers in future. Rather than dealing with different network operators, the banks now only have to deal with TREVICA. TREVICA then ensures that the credit card functions are securely transferred in encrypted format to users in all mobile networks for storage on their SIM card. Customers can then manage these digital payment cards in the Vodafone Wallet and use them for payments at NFC terminals.
