How was Kango (Sino-Japanese Words) Treated in the Early Days of Broadcasting: − Exploring the Records of NHK Broadcasting Language Committee − Takehiro SHIODA (Summary) This report discusses how kango, or Sino-Japanese words, was used in broadcasting mainly during the period from the commencement of broadcasting in Japan to the start of the Pacific War, focusing on “issues on usage” and “issues on reading.” (1) Earlier days prior to the launch of the Broadcasting Language Committee Radio broadcast started in 1925, and the Broadcasting Language Committee was established nine years later. However, a movement advocating the use of easy-to-understanding words in broadcasting existed before the launch of the Committee. (2) 1934 to 1936 The Committee worked on the standardization of the use of homonyms (words identical in sound and words similar in sound) as much as possible. The Committee also tried to standardize the pronunciation of each kango which had multiple reading variants. (3) 1937 In the wake of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in July 1937, a large number of personal and place names of China became mentioned in broadcasts. Among them there were some names which listeners could not easily associate with corresponding kanji (Chinese characters) only by phonetic information. Besides, as one kanji usually has multiple pronunciations in the Japanese language, Chinese personal and place names as well as Buddhist terms were often read in different ways. The Committee started organizing the pronunciations of such terms. (4) 1938 Priorities in dealing with kango idioms with different pronunciations had been rather “commonly- used-pronunciation-oriented,” but a sign of “dictionary-pronunciation-oriented” moves loomed around that time. -

9. Princeton in Beijing (PiB) a. Matthew Walak, Summer 2019 Final Report I originally planned to keep a blog, but I quickly discovered PiB left me with neither the time nor the energy to maintain a weekly blog. As a result, here’s my final report: A lot happens at Princeton in Beijing in a very short amount of time. I could not fully process my experience until I returned home and had time to think about it for a few days. From the perspective of a second-year Chinese student, my entire summer was essentially a non-stop Chinese class from the moment my plane touched down in Beijing to the moment I returned to Boston. In terms of workload, the weekdays were tough. Channeling my inner STEM major, here are some fun numbers: Daily class time: 4 hours 10 minutes (4 x 50 min classes + 1 x 50 min one-on-one class) Daily homework average: 3 hours 36 minutes (Monday through Friday) Total class time, homework, tests, and test preparation: 291 hours 8 minutes Total working days in China: 39 days Percentage of awake time on working days spent studying or in class: 46.7% (Assuming 8 hours of sleep, which was not always the case) Essentially, Monday through Friday, almost half of the time I was awake was spent studying or in class. We had a few weekend cultural excursions to see tourist attractions such as the Great Wall, the 2019 Beijing horticulture exhibition, and the Marco Polo Bridge. We also had the opportunity to see a Chinese opera (Which ended up being in French), and Chinese acrobatics. -

Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences. -

CHAPTER FOUR THE Sino-JapaneSE WAR On the night of 7 July 1937, while Japanese troops were engaging in mili- tary manoeuvres outside the historic fortress town of Wanping, southwest of Beijing, one among their number failed to report for muster at the end of the exercise. His regimental commander, Mutaguchi Renya, tele- phoned the Chinese garrison commander of the town, Ji Xingwen, and requested that his troops be allowed to enter the town to conduct a search for the missing soldier. Ji refused on the basis that such an act would be a violation of Chinese sovereignty, but compromised by allowing two Japanese officers to oversee Chinese troops carrying out the unsuccessful search for the missing soldier. Convinced that the missing soldier was in fact being held prisoner by the garrison, Mutaguchi gave the order for the Japanese troops in the area began firing on the town at 5 am the following morning, and ordered his men to seize a crucial crossing that the fortress was designed to protect. This bridge—the Lugouqiao, otherwise known as the Marco Polo Bridge because it had been the subject of detailed descrip- tion by the Venetian explorer in The Travels of Marco Polo—became the focal point of a bitter struggle that would escalate into a Sino-Japanese war spanning nearly eight years, ending only with Japan’s surrender to the Allies in 1945. The story of the early phase of the Sino-Japanese War was one of spir- ited yet ineffective defence, followed by disorderly retreat on the part of Chinese troops. -

The Orders and Medals Society of America THE VICTORY ORDER AND MEDALS OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA Paul L. T. Kua, OMSA#5121 1995 marked the 50th anniversary of V-J Day. It seems an appropriate time to revisit the subject of Chinese Victory Medals issued in celebration. At the end of World War II, when the Japanese Government surrendered to the allied forces on 2 September 1945, there were two Chinese forces contending for ultimate control of China. The Nationalists, under the leadership of Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek, headed the government of the Republic of China, which was recognized as the legitimate government of China by most of the world. The Cgmmunists, under the leadership of Mao Ze Dong, had effective control of large, usually more remote areas of China and challenged the authority of the Nationalists. Both the Nationalists and the Communists had been involved in years of struggle with the Japanese invaders in various parts of China. Both of them had issued their own Victory Order and Medal(s) in commemoration of the struggle. This article focuses on the official Victory Order and Medals issued by the Nationalist Republic government at the end of World War II. 1 Historical Notes To most Chinese the Second World War was known by the more nationalistic and emotional name of Kang Ri Zhan Zheng, the War of Resistance Against the Japanese, or Ba Nian Kang Zhan, the Eight Year War of Resistance. Japanese imperialist designs on China went back many years. At the end of the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95), Li Hung Chang, the plenipotentiary of the Qing Dynasty, was forced to sign the humiliating Treaty of Shimonoseki. -

THE DIARY OF A MANCHU SOLDIER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY CHINA The Manchu conquest of China inaugurated one of the most successful and long-living dynasties in Chinese history: the Qing (1644–1911). The wars fought by the Manchus to invade China and consolidate the power of the Qing imperial house spanned over many decades through most of the seventeenth century. This book provides the first Western translation of the diary of Dzengmeo, a young Manchu officer, and recounts the events of the War of the Three Feudatories (1673–1682), fought mostly in southwestern China and widely regarded as the most serious internal military challenge faced by the Manchus before the Taiping rebellion (1851–1864). The author’s participation in the campaign provides the close-up, emotional perspective on what it meant to be in combat, while also providing a rare window into the overall organization of the Qing army, and new data in key areas of military history such as combat, armament, logistics, rank relations, and military culture. The diary represents a fine and rare example of Manchu personal writing, and shows how critical the development of Manchu studies can be for our knowledge of China’s early modern history. Marco Polo Bridge Incident Background Relations between China and Japan were chilly, to say the least, even prior to the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. The Empire of Japan had annexed Korea, formerly a Chinese territory, in 1910, and had invaded and occupied Manchuria in 1931. Japan had spent the five years leading up to the Marco Polo Bridge Incident gradually seizing ever-larger sections of northern and eastern China. China's government, the Kuomintang led by Chiang Kai-shek, was based further south in Nanjing, but Beijing was still a strategic city. The key to Beijing was the Marco Polo Bridge, near to the town of Wanping, as it was the only road and rail link between Beijing and the Kuomintang's stronghold in Nanjing. The Japanese Imperial Army had been trying to pressure China to withdraw from the area without success. The "Incident" In the early summer of 1937, Japan began to carry out military training exercises near the bridge. They always warned the local inhabitants, to prevent panic, but on July 7, 1937, the Japanese commenced training without prior notice to the Chinese. The local Chinese garrison at Wanping, believing that they were under attack, fired a few scattered shots, and the Japanese returned fire. In the confusion, a Japanese soldier went missing, and his commanding officer demanded that the Chinese allow the Japanese troops to enter and search the town for him. The Chinese refused. The Chinese army offered to conduct the search, which the Japanese commander agreed to, but some Japanese infantry troops tried to push their way in to the town regardless. -

Part 2 - The Marco Polo Bridge Incident and the Battles of Shanghai and Nanking The Battle of Shanghai: The true starting point of the war The Marco Polo Bridge Incident is usually considered to be the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War. There is no mistake that this incident served to trigger the Sino-Japanese conflict, but the incident itself was only a small skirmish—it cannot be called the start of a full-blown war. Consequently, it would be inaccurate to claim that the fighting at the Marco Polo Bridge "spread" to Shanghai. After the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, the Japanese Army sent three divisions from Japan and units of the Kwantung Army to northern China in the hopes of restraining the nonstop ceasefire violations of Chinese soldiers in the area. Japanese forces occupied Tianjin, but they did not advance beyond, or make any attempt to advance beyond, the city of Baoding, just southwest of Beijing. Furthermore, on August 5, the Japanese government made a landmark peace proposal with the Chinese and planned to hold its first meeting with Chinese leaders in September. Therefore, the Chinese Army's attack on Shanghai, carried out on August 13, can hardly be called a natural extension of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. Rather, the Chinese attack on Shanghai should be seen as a dramatic new crisis sparked by Chiang Kai-shek's determination to wage full-scale war against Japan. Rather than a clash of local units, an all-out, state-dictated military offensive constitutes “war” under international law. The existence of an official declaration of war is not the defining factor. -
