ABOUT THE COVER The August issue of the self-starter celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 Cadillac. Our cover is graced with one of 1965’s finest offerings, the Fleetwood Eldorado, with the example being owned by former CLC president Al Haas. The ’65 Eldorado had a price of $6,754, with only 2,125 manufactured.

In addition, an entirely new Engineering building and adjacent five-level salaried personnel parking deck were erected. All Engineering activities were relocated from the original Engineering building on Clark Avenue to the new state-of-the-art facility on Scotten Avenue. The former four-floor, 1926-era Engineering building was refurbished and integrated into the final assembly building to provide the increased floor space needed to assemble bumpers, grilles and instrument panels. (The maplewood parquet flooring on the CLC commemorative plaques was obtained from this building.) The rearrangements freed up floor space that permitted doubling the Plating Department capacity buffing areas as well as added copper, nickel and chrome electroplating tanks. The original Albert Kahn/George Mason Administration building was stripped to the structural poured reinforced concrete skeleton, rebuilt and a fifth floor added. Adjacent to the Administration building, a new Customer Reception Center (CRC) was constructed that included a showroom with floor-to-ceiling plate glass picture windows and a vehicle display turntable. Factory tour visitors as well as customers who elected to take delivery of their new Cadillac at the factory were greeted here. For the latter use, it was also known as the “Will Call” area. Of course, courtesy cars, usually either or Fleetwood Broughams, were assigned to Will Call and employed to convey customers from the airport or their hotel to the Cadillac plant. Will Call deliveries were always very special events! All Cadillacs (except limousines) were totally redesigned for 1965. Limousines retained the 1964 body and instrument panel. The focus of the collector car world returns to historic Auburn Auction Park, September 2 – 6, for Auctions America annual Auburn Fall event. Held during the famous Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival and spanning more than four decades, the Labor Day Weekend tradition is one of the country’s premier celebrations of the collector car hobby. The five-day event offers something for everyone, led by a roster of approximately 800 classics, muscle cars, hot rods, exotics and more. In addition to four days of fast-paced auction excitement, the event provides fun for the whole family, including a car corral, swap meet, unique vendors, celebrity appearances and thrill-seeking automotive-themed activities.

Year after year, Cadillac kept breaking production records, and, in the mid-’60s, decided to do a major restyle and re- engineering to keep the momentum going. When the Clark Avenue plant shut down on July 8, 1964, one of the many reasons was to do an expansion (a 471,000-square- foot addition) and to gear up for a newly designed Cadillac. This addition could now allow Cadillac to produce 800 cars per day—a new high for the Division. The design for the 1965, under the watchful eye of Bill Mitchell, started in 1962. The styling improvements included

The tailfins were supposedly gone; however, symmetrical rear fender forms tapered to thin edges both top and bottom, giving the car a visual tra- ditional impression. Curved side windows with frameless glass were new as was tempered glass in the rear back window of the . Perimeter frame construction allowed repositioning of the engine six inches forward in the frame, thus lowering the transmission hump, which increased interior room. Cadillac bragged that the 1965 models were completely new from top to bot- tom, inside and out. Aside from the new exterior styling, interiors on all but the Series 75s featured a redesigned instru- ment panel. The new frame design not only gave 1965 68357 Coupe de Ville the car better balance, a lower center of gravity and greater torsional control over Rick Jablonski • Willoughby, Ohio the cruciform frame introduced in 1957, it also saved 300 pounds. One-piece driveshafts were now used on all models except the Series 75s and commercial chassis. These models con- tinued to use the heavy-duty “X” frame and two-piece driveshaft. The front and rear suspensions were also changed, which contributed to a smoother ride. Coil springs continued at all four corners.

One of the few holdovers was the 1964 ALANCLARK/THE SELF-STARTER BY PHOTOS engine, which had a displacement of 429 cubic inches. It was good for 340 BHP at 4,000 rpm. A new turbo Hydra-Matic combined the best features of the 1964 turbo, plus the dual-range braking of the older Hydra-Matics. A new coaxial resonator exhaust was an exclusive Cadillac feature for 1965, and, with its new sound-baffling system, was said to be very effective in canceling out most exhaust noise.
