The Faculty of Graduate Studies has responsibility for all matters relating to the submission of graduate course, curriculum and program changes. Recommendations for new programs or changes are submitted by the Faculty Council of Graduate Studies for the approval of Senate. 2. In October 2007, the Faculty of Graduate Studies approved a process of Streamlining Course Introductions, Modifications, & Deletions which allows the Executive Committee to approve these changes in lieu of Faculty Council when the courses are not associated with a new program or program changes. 3. The Faculty of Graduate Studies Executive Committee voted via email prior to the above date to consider course change proposals from the Dept. of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. Observations 1. The Dept. of Civil Engineering proposes the introduction of two (2) courses to fulfill the needs and demands of the construction engineering and management area of the grad programs in Civil Engineering. Dept. of Civil Engineering Course Introductions CIVL 7370 Advanced Construction Management 3 Strategic management of construction organizations; strategy systems and processes; health and safety management; human resources management; benchmarking; financing; budgeting; value management and financial performance; and quantitative decision-making for construction organizations. CIVL 7380 Sustainability in Construction 3 Introduction and overview of sustainable construction and green buildings; green building Page 1 of 2 3 assessment tools; the green building process; green building design, construction and commissioning; the economics of green buildings and future directions in sustainable construction and green buildings. The Dept. of Accounting & Finance proposes the deletion of two (2) courses and introduction of two (2) courses to change the name and description of the deletions (and introduce them as course introductions) in order to more clearly define what is already being taught. The Head of the Dept. of Economics, Dr. Pinaki Bose, provided a letter of support for the introductions of the two courses and indicated there is no significant overlap with any of the graduate courses in the Dept. of Economics. Dr. Bose added that there would be interest in cross-listing the courses. Dept. of Accounting & Finance Course Deletions FIN 7500 Financial Theory and Corporate Policy 3 FIN 7510 Finance 1: Capital Markets Page 1 of 4 5 3 Course introduction FIN 7100 Financial Economics 3 Course provides Ph.D. students with a broad theoretical understanding of financial economics required for advanced study of theoretical finance. It covers a variety of topics and discusses the application in different areas of finance. Good knowledge of microeconomics, probability and statistics, and calculus is required. Prerequisite: admission to the Ph.D. program in Management (Finance) or approval by instructor. Not to be held with FIN 7500 (formerly 009.750). FIN 7110 Asset Pricing 3 Critical evaluation of latest empirical research in finance with focus on equity and bond markets. Tests of intertemporal, multifactor, conditional, and unconditional asset pricing models. Special emphasis on developing econometric skills for the analysis of financial data. Prerequisite: admission to the Ph.D. program in Management (Finance) or approval by instructor. Not to be held with FIN 7510 (formerly 009.751). NET CREDIT HOUR CHANGE 0 2. The Dept. of Physiology proposes the deletion of two courses and the introduction of four courses to split the two 3 credit hour courses into four 1.5 credit hour courses. These courses together cover the previous material but importantly change the driver from understanding current knowledge of human physiology, to an appreciation of human physiology in the context of understanding disease or pathophysiological states, available therapeutic approaches and current areas of research. The splitting of the courses addresses issues of time to completion and was a recommendation in Physiology’s recent Graduate Program Review. No additional resources are required. Dept. of Physiology Course Deletions PHGY 7242 Medical Physiology Part A 3 PHGY 7244 Medical Physiology Part B Page 2 of 4 6 3 Course introduction PHGY 7252 Respiratory Physiology & Pathophysiology 1.5 Lecture, readings, and student-directed discussion course dealing with fundamental biophysical processes and function of major respiratory organ systems (including membrane transport and muscle contraction in respiratory physiology), illustrated with pathophysiological structures and function, and their relationship to disease. The course will also examine current therapeutic approaches and active areas of research interest. PHGY 7254 Cardiovascular Physiology & Pathophysiology 1.5 Lecture, readings, and student-directed discussion course dealing with fundamental biophysical processes and function of major cardiovascular organ systems, illustrated with pathophysiological structures and function, and their relationship to disease. The course will also examine current therapeutic approaches and active areas of research interest. PHGY 7256 Endocrine Physiology & Pathophysiology 1.5 Lecture, readings, and student-directed discussion course dealing with fundamental biophysical processes and function of major endocrine (including reproductive) organ systems, illustrated with pathophysiological structures and function, and their relationship to disease.     Manitoba Provincial Men’s History Year of First Provincial Men’s Championship: 1925 Format: From 1925 to 1958 teams played a straight knockout format. This was played in conjunction with the MCA Bonspiel. In some years as many as 64 teams qualified. Exceptions to this included 1930 to 1932 where the MCA Bonspiel Grand Aggregate Winner was declared Provincial Champion. In 1949 a round robin format was used with 12 teams. In 1959 the current format of a maximum of 32 teams was started, however if a team qualified twice the numbers were reduced accordingly. In 1965, minimum 32 teams became the yearly number to compete. There have been various types of draws used to declare the champions over the years. In 1995, the 8 team qualifier was introduced and in 2003 the Final Four or Page Playoff was introduced.     150 NOTABLE MANITOBA CURLING TEAMS In honour of Manitoba’s 150 th Anniversary, the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame and Museum has undertaken to identify 150 teams which played a significant role in creating (in the early years) and extending (in more recent times) Manitoba’s reputation for competitive excellence in the world of curling. Our list acknowledges teams from all competitive sectors from the high-profile junior and men’s and women’s teams to less well-known teams at the mixed, senior, and masters levels and even outside the association realm in the deaf, police and postal championship realms. All of these successful teams played roles in establishing Manitoba’s well-deserved reputation. We also acknowledge recent successes in the new discipline of Mixed Doubles but this historical perspective is focussed on the traditional four-person game. INVITATION TO THE PUBLIC TO ADD TO THE LIST: A total of 150 teams were identified initially. Subsequently two missed teams have been added so the list now includes 152 teams. There are many other teams across Manitoba’s curling history which also belong on a listing of this nature. Manitoba curling fans are invited to suggest other teams for inclusion. In most cases, the teams are included on this list on the basis of the team’s on-ice success in a single outstanding year OR across a series of years. In the latter case, we have acknowledged that so long as three people remained on a team from a previous recorded success – then it was still the same team.

They saved the best for last as the final playoff positions were determined during a wild night of excitement during the last round- robin draw Friday at the Tim Hor- tons Brier, presented by Monsanto. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place when Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton delivered a last-rock draw to the button for a 6-5 extra end victory over B.C.’s Andrew Bilesky, who was playing for noth- ing but pride. Alberta skip Kevin Martin could only watch his playoff hopes dis- appear as Stoughton celebrated the victory. Martin used a last-rock draw of his own for a 6-5 win that handed Ontario’s Glenn Howard his first loss. But Martin couldn’t overcome a horrible start to the week and won’t have a chance to win a record fifth Brier. “That was the most exciting evening I have ever been involved in curling,” said Howard, who fin- ished first with a 10-1 record. “I thoroughly enjoyed that evening.” Howard will now play Stoughton (8-3) in Saturday afternoon’s 1-2 game.
