www.Curlmanitoba.org 11 President’s Message

elcome to the 2010-11 curling season. I am truly honoured to be W President of this great Association. Curling has been a part of my life since the age of eight when I pushed my first rock down the natural ice at the Rathwell Curling Club. Curling has always been celebrated as a lifetime sport and has something to offer to everyone. It is played by people of all ages and skill levels, social or competitive and by those looking for exercise or just a social pastime. When you introduce your family and friends to this wonderful sport they will be forever grateful. I am. My role along with the 12-member CurlManitoba Board and Office is to serve you the curlers, members and our member facilities. This is what we all do as volunteers for the sport we love. CurlManitoba has long been recognized as a leader both within the and world curling organizations. This is due to the efforts of our many dedicated volunteers working diligently within their clubs on and off the ice, in their sport regions, and their provincial and national bodies. I would like to thank all our great volunteers for the many hours they have put into the sport. Thank you to the staff at the CurlManitoba office for your commitment, dedication and hard work throughout the year. It is indeed a pleasure working with you all. I want to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors. Without their support, it would be impossible to host our many local events, Provincial and National Championships. This fall CurlManitoba hosted the Canadian Mixed Championship in Morris November 13 to 20, 2010 and will host the Canadian Masters at Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club, March 30 to April 5, 2011. We invite you to attend and watch Canada’s best curlers in action. The Manitoba Curling Tour continues to grow, especially in the Junior ranks looking to improve their skills. CurlManitoba’s future success is truly among the ranks of these young men and women. CurlManitoba teams are amongst the best curlers in the world vying towards the Olympic stage. These are truly exciting times for our curlers, our Association and our sport. I often say most people I know, I have met either through work or curling. Curlers everywhere talk about the many great lifelong friendships made. I have been blessed with over 40 years of friendships and look forward to making many more. Thanks go out to the clubs, both rural and in Winnipeg that I have been a member of over my years curling. Special thanks to the Morden Curling Club, where I have been a member for nearly 30 years. I appreciate their support and encouragement during my years volunteering with CurlManitoba. I look forward to gathering new insight from each and everyone this year and I wish everyone a successful and enjoyable season of curling and friendship.

22 curlmanitoba YEARBOOK – 2010/11 Message from the Manitoba Curling Foundation

t is my pleasure to extend best wishes on behalf of the Manitoba I Curling Foundation Board of Directors to all Manitoba curlers. Hopefully you will have a successful and enjoyable year curling. The mandate of the Manitoba Curling Foundation is to promote curling throughout the province of Manitoba. We continue to assist CurlManitoba with funding for their development programs, provide financial assistance with curling clinics and award grants to curling clubs who host provincial events. Annually the Foundation awards four $1,000 scholarships and up to 14 $250 Sport Awards to worthy junior curlers. These awards are given to active junior curlers who are continuing on with their education and have given some volunteer time to their school, curling club and community. We have been receiving applications every year but we would encourage more individuals to submit applications. Information is available on the CurlManitoba website. There is a deadline so please make sure your application is in on time. We are always looking for volunteers for this board every year. If you are interested in serving on the board please contact the CurlManitoba office or any of the board members listed below. The Foundation Board meets six or seven times each season so it is not a huge commitment to be a director. I wish each and everyone good luck in the upcoming curling season and remember. Have fun!

www.Curlmanitoba.org 31 Morris hosts successful Canadian Mixed

t was a big challenge for a I small community – host a Canadian curling championship and do it in a way which would reflect well on both the community and the Canadian Curling Association. Post-event assessments of the November 13-20, 2010 event by players, CCA representatives and committee volunteers suggest Morris met the challenge of demonstrating the ability of a small rural community to host events usually played in much larger centres. As a result, it is expected many smaller communities will have future opportunities to host championship events. With a population in the range of 1,600 people, Morris is acknowledged as the smallest community to ever host a Canadian curling championship. Excellent ice conditions provided by Ice Tech Allan Gitzel, the facilities of the Southern Manitoba Convention Centre, and the energy and imagination of 160 Morris and area volunteers supplemented by a handful of Winnipeg volunteers who helped with stats combined to create a memorable event for both competitors and curling fans. The support of numerous sponsors including the DEKALB SuperSpiel’s sponsor group was a key to the success. The sponsorship support made a complete entertainment program possible. It also allowed the committee to undertake programs such as a school program in which every class up to Grade 8 at Morris School attended the event to cheer for and meet the players from the team assigned to their class. In another successful community outreach program for the curling club, the proceeds from a Friday night Championship Social were shared with the local daycare which is in the process of a fund-raising to construct a new playground.

32 curlmanitoba YEARBOOK – 2010/11 Silver for Manitoba, gold for PEI

rince Edward Islander Robert P Campbell has been to a pair of Canadian Mixed Championships, both of them in Manitoba. In 1989, he won a gold medal when he beat Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton in the championship game. In November 2010, Campbell returned to Manitoba for only his second appearance at a Canadian Mixed Championship. Again, he played Manitoba in the final and again he went home with the championship gold medal. Campbell, Rebecca Jean MacPhee, Robbie Doherty, and Jackie Reid defeated Terry McNamee and his Hamiota team 4-3 in the final. McNamee and his Manitobans manufactured a steal of one on the ninth end to tie 3-3 and come home without the hammer. With his first rock on that home end, McNamee rubbed a guard attempting a draw to the four foot behind centre cover. Campbell made the shot perfectly, stopping on the centre line full in the four foot circle. McNamee’s only shot was a difficult double raise takeout which missed, giving the championship without throwing the final stone. For McNamee, it meant a silver medal to go with two previous bronze medals. For third Lana Hunter, it meant a silver medal to go with one previous bronze medal. For second Allan Lawn and lead Lisa Blixhavn, who played the event in place of Tanya Enns, it was a first medal. In round-robin play, Campbell (PEI) finished 10-1 with his only loss coming at the hands of Manitoba. Two- time Canadian Mixed Champion Paul Flemming () finished second at 9-2. Chris Gardner (), Charlie Sullivan (New Brunswick) , and McNamee finished in third at 7-4. McNamee survived the tiebreaker round and defeated Flemming 8-3 in the semi-final.
