The Ahoms who followed the traditional, sicio-cultural and religious games for the entertainment of the common people. They played such games like haati juj, xen- kanuar juj, maal juj, kukura juj, dhup khel, kori khel, nao khel, asari khei, hoi gudu khel, ghila khel, tang guti etc. These were played at the Rupahi Pather of Rongpur. The common people could enjoy the games altogether. There are common believes associated with these khel also. In that period many games were popular and found significance. However some of these games were still played traditionally in some particular places of Assam. Purpose of the study: This paper aims to analyse such games which were commonly played during the Ahom period. However, it was destroyed in course of time due to natural causes, but at the same time these were also relevant .Because the games were related with natural rituals, common beliefs, physical activities. Methodology: The research methods mainly used in this study are analytical and descriptive methods. The necessary materials are collected from library and used, with proper observation and analysis, to justify the proposed ideas. Main Findings: Being a part of north-east India the Ahom, a distinct ethnic group inhabiting in Assam has practices so much games which is relevant today.

Gauripur zamindary is larger in size than any other zamindary in Goalpara. The size of zamindary was 355 square miles. It was originated from the Nankar receipt from Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Kabindra Patra was appointed to the post of Naib kanangu of the thana Rangamati, situated near Gauripur. His descendants had enjoyed the office of Kananguship for more than 300 years. The zamindars of Gauripur are mainly feudal in nature. Their main motive was to occupy land and possessed a vast tract of land in the 2nd decade of 17th century. The zamindars of Gauripur were conservative in their outlook but some of the zamindars of Gauripur paid their attention to benevolent public works. Once a time western Assam was more advance than eastern Assam because of the benevolent activities of Gauripur zamindars. Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua was one of the zamindars in Gauripur zamindary who paid attention to develop the society in every sphere. He was an exchequer in the public works, viz. education 52%, hospital 16%, sadabrata 18%, donation 12%, and public health 2%. Thus he contributed in every aspect of society, education, art, culture, economic, and so on for the welfare of the mass people.

    Sabha’s books for sale in Mumbai Assam Bhawan President Dr. Saikia presenting the packet of books to commissioner-secy., Assam Bhawan, Mumbai, Shri Debasish Sharma A series of selected books published by Asam Sahitya Sabha will now be available for sale at Assam Bhawan in Mumbai. At a solemn function held at the Singhapurush Radhagobinba Barua Meeting Hall in the Sabha's Guwahati office on November 30, 2020, Sabha president Dr Kuladhar Saikia ceremonially presented the packet of books to the Mumbai Assam House-based State Govt's commissioner-secretary Shri Debasish Sharma, ACS. Dr Saikia also presented to Shri Sharma another packet of books as gift to the Mumbai Assam House library. Speaking on the occasion, the Sabha president Dr Saikia said that this was a part of the mission to take Sabha's books to the close proximity of the greater reader community. Under this scheme, the Sabha has recently opened a book shop in its Dibrugarh office, said Dr Saikia adding that some more book shops will be opened in Sabha’s rest of the regional offices, i.e., Diphu, North Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Jalah, Dhubri and Silchar. Recently, the Sabha has opened up a Sahitya Sabha book corner at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakhsetra’s souvenir shop, informed Dr Saikia. It may be mentioned here that two book shops are already there in Sabha’s Jorhat central office and Guwahati administrative office. Commissioner-Secretary Shri Sharma, in his speech after receiving the books, lauded Sabha’s such mission of taking books to the close reach of the masses and said that Mumbai Assam Bhawan is privileged to extend helping hand to Sabha’s such nobel venture.

    Address by the President Kuladhar Saikia 75th Biennial Session, Sualkuchi February 2, 2020 Asam Sahitya Sabha My most respected and learned lovers of literature present in this august gathering, honourable president and members of the Reception Committee, delegates and my most revered former presidents of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, other office bearers and inaugurator of today’s session/ meeting. At the very outset, I offer my veneration to you all and I also seek your blessings. I bow gratefully as you have given me a grand responsibility of a nationalist organisation like Asam Sahitya Sabha. Today I am reminded of the chilly winter evening when I was holding two crumbled pieces of paper where I had composed two of my poems, where words with variations at frequent intervals were rushing in, in front of my eyes in the backdrop of a faint light. I have continually rearranged those words to make them look like a complete whole, the entire exercise was analogous to mending the machines in a factory workshop. The flavours of the words were encircling me, I was shaking with excitement and was also glad to see those who were reciting their poems one after another with pride on the stage. The cool breeze touched my sweaty forehead while I was waiting for my name to be announced, waiting for my turn to walk up to the dazzling podium and read out the melody of my poems in front of the microphone! I recall my school days in Rangiya, where the Annual session of Asam Sahitya Sabha was in progress, and I was waiting for hours together with a bated breath to recite a self composed poem.

  • Sabha's First Executive Body Meeting of the Year
    Sabha's first executive body meeting of the year held Asam Sahitya Sabha's executive body of the session 2020-22 met for the first time on November 1, 2020, at the Daanbir Radhakanta Handique Bhawan in the premises of the Sabha's central office Chandrakanta Handique Bhawan, Jorhat, with its president Dr Kuladhar Saikia in the chair. Around 100 executive body members including district representatives took part in the day-long meeting. President Dr Saikia, in his opening speech, appealed to all for help and cooperation to strengthen Sabha's organisational base as well as to implement the future plans of the Sabha in effective manner. He presented in brief some of the future schemes of Sabha which include digitization of a series of precious Assamese books, opening of the avenues for teaching Assamese language, adopting adequate means for protection and preservation of indigenous language, literature and age-old rich traditional cultural traits of Assam, etc. The latest issue of Sabha's quarterly research journal 'Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika' which was brought out as 'Corona Pandemic Special Volume' and Sabha's quarterly news bulletin 'Asam Sahitya Sabha Barta' were ceremonially released. Latest issue of ‘Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika’ being inaugurated General secretary Jadab Chandra Sharma presented his report and the meeting ended with adopting of a number of resolutions which include to demand the state government to ensure economic security to the thousands of working class people, small-scale businessmen, educated youths of Assam who have suffered terribly due to over six-month-long country-wide lockdown, to secure the interest of the educated indigenous new generation people of Assam in case of government and private sector jobs by introducing a flawless and effective employment policy, to implement properly the state language and education policy, etc.
