Integrated Library System (ILS) Database Administrator FLSA Status: Exempt Salary Range: $36.53 – $48.95 hourly $75,982 - $101,816 yearly About PLS The Peninsula Library System (PLS) is a consortium of 35 public and community college libraries working together to provide innovative and cost-effective service to their users. Founded in 1971, the system is a Joint Powers of Agreement and is funded primarily by member libraries: Burlingame Public Library, Daly City Public Library, Menlo Park Public Library, Redwood City Public Library, San Bruno Public Library, San Mateo County Libraries, San Mateo Public Library, South San Francisco Public Library, and the San Mateo County Community College District (including the College of San Mateo, Canada College and Skyline College). PLS also receives support from the state California Library Services Act funds, federal Library Services and Technology Act and local contracts for special services. Summary Under the supervision of the IT Director and part of the IT Unit, called the Peninsula Library Automated Network (PLAN), the Integrated Library System (ILS) Database Administrator provides ILS support for 33 sites; has the primary responsibility for the performance, integrity; and security of the ILS and integrated systems including database maintenance, system revisions, and updates. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Secures and maintains the ILS: troubleshoots issues; maintains configuration files and tables, network access tables, vendor API configuration and authorization, user accounts and authorizations - Uses scripting to pull and collate data, automate manual tasks, automate reports - Performs upgrades and enhancements to the library’s ILS and modules - Provides connectivity support for all third-party applications which connect to the ILS such as but not limited to discovery layer, EZ Proxy, Self-Check, AMH, text renewal system, and mobile apps - Coordinates with Network and Systems Engineers in the maintenance of ILS, Tomcat and development servers - Runs monthly reports for all databases and e-materials - Responds and resolves issues submitted via the help desk 1 Other Job Duties: - Attends committee and PLS group meetings to provide ILS feedback, make recommendations for best practices and for implementing new policies - Works closely with committees on procedures that contribute and adhere to system standards for all PLS member libraries - Acts as primary contact with ILS vendor and vendor help desk to resolve system issues - Coordinates with and advises committees in the maintenance and updating of catalog, patron and circulation data in the ILS; works with electronic resources vendors to implement and troubleshoot database resources - Develops scripts using Perl and/or Python to automate data extracts; updates and imports ILS data for a variety of internal or external clients - Attends library conferences, scans literature, and contacts vendors to stay current with library technologies which improve ILS functionality and recommend new features - Will be on-call 24x7 during one week of every five This job description is not a complete list of potential duties. Employees will be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties requested by their supervisor. 2 Required Preferred Education Accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Formal training in computer Science; or Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science; or systems theory and programming Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems or closely related field Experience Two years of recent verifiable experience in three or more 1+ years working in library areas: ILS oversight; large relational databases using SQL; technology field; Linux OS; SSH, FTP and SFTP; Linux security; large relational 1 + years writing computer scripts using Perl or Python databases using SIP2 and APIs Knowledge How to prioritize help desk and project management duties Basic Tableau, PHP English usage, spelling, and grammar Knowledge of library catalog discovery layer management Skills and Expert knowledge/experience with large relational databases Familiarity with Integrated Library Abilities Knowledge and experience in: System software desirable; - Cataloging standards and practices Innovative Interface’s Sierra in a - PostgreSQL, LAMP systems (particularly Apache public library setting preferable Tomcat and Ubuntu Linux OS) - RESTful API and SIP2 Curiosity about what’s working - Understanding of Resource Description Formats and what’s not with the system (BIBFRAME, MARCXML, Dublin Core, MADS, MODS, EAD, EAC-CPF, OAI-ORE, PREMIS) Ability to discern what information - Proficient in a scripting language would be useful to librarians and - Knowledge of MARC and OCLC records staff - Understanding of digital library standards (AudioMD, VideoMD, TextMD, METS, MIX, and PREMIS) - Basic PC or server maintenance Excellent organizational, interpersonal, customer service and communication skills Adapts to a fast-paced environment with changing needs REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Work Environment and Physical Demands: Normally seated, standing or walking at will; normal physical activity including some bending, pushing, pulling, and carrying, which may range up to 50 lbs., upon occasion. Keyboarding and working at a computer monitor for extended periods required. Phone usage, reading, speaking, and listening required.
