ENTERTAINMENT Sugar and the Mint. Sugar and the Mint’s spirited take on folk and bluegrass excites audiences across the country. The band synthesizes genres into a sparkling repertoire of original songs, balancing first-time singalong hooks with robust musicality. Sugar and the Mint’s unique vocal approach features complex, ethereal harmonies supporting accessible melodies. Informed by everything from bluegrass to baroque to current pop and country, the traditional blend of guitar, violins, mandolin and bass instrumentation is anything but standard-fare acoustic music. In 2017, the band took first place in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest. The Arizona group has since toured coast to coast and recorded two albums: Just Past Midnight (2018) and Grape Flavored (2017). The original music on these records showcases the band’s energy, songwriting artistry, and fresh perspective on folk and bluegrass. Sugar and the Mint hails from Prescott, Arizona. Since forming in Northeast Minneapolis in 2006, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude. They’re a band with one foot in tradition and the other in the world of music today, and one of the very few who can find an overlooked bluegrass classic in a song by M. Ward or the Clash then throw down hard on a standard by Bill Monroe. The High 48s are also a band of songwriters. Here, too, they take a modern approach, heeding the well-worn advice to writers: write what you know. Their songs ring true to their lives as northern city-folk rather than an imagined “sweet, sunny south” of coal mines and dark hollers. The band takes its name from railroad slang for the boxcars originally used to transport troops on the front lines in WWI that could carry 40 soldiers or 8 horses, and were later used in the US on fast-moving “hot shot” freight trains by train-hoppers looking for work during the Great Depression. thehigh48s.com Shelby Lentz. While she may be petite in stature, Shelby Lentz has a voice that will fill any venue. Shelby's talent was recognized at an early age and by fourteen, she was singing the National Anthem at local sporting venues, performed for the first time at the Wild Bull Saloon and earned over 100,000 votes in Bob Kingsley's Future Star online competition. It would not take long before she was grabbing the attention of others in the industry and at just fifteen she opened at The State Theater in Kalamazoo for Warner Music artist, Frankie Ballard. It was also about this time that she began collaborating with local song writers on original music as well. After the diagnosis of Huntington’s Disease in her family, and being recently diagnosed herself, she began her own nonprofit, “Champions for HD” to help aid research as well as other local families struggling with this disease.

The dissertation consists of a critical preface and a novel. The preface analyzes what it terms “polyvocal” novels, or novels employing multiple points of view, as well as “layered storytelling,” or layers of textuality within novels, such as stories within stories. Specifically, the first part of the preface discusses polyvocality in twenty-first century American novels, while the second part explores layered storytelling in novels responding to World War II or the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The preface analyzes the advantages and difficulties connected to these techniques, as well as their aptitude for reflecting the fractured, disconnected, and subjective nature of the narratives we construct to interpret traumatic experiences. It also acknowledges the necessity—despite its inherent limitations—of using language to engage with this fragmentation and cope with its challenges. The preface uses numerous novels as examples and case studies, and it also explores these concepts and techniques in relation to the process of writing the novel After the Planes. After the Planes depicts multiple generations of a family who utilize storytelling as a means to work through grief, hurt, misunderstanding, and loss—whether from interpersonal conflicts or from war. Against her father’s wishes, a young woman moves in with her nearly- unknown grandfather, struggling to understand the rifts in her family and how they have shaped her own identity.

    How circus training can enhance the well-being of autistic children and their families Kristy Danialle Seymour BA Creative Arts School of Humanities Griffith University Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts and Media with Honours July 2012 Abstract This project is concerned with how circus training can benefit children diagnosed on the autistic spectrum and, in turn, their families. Many “special needs” children spend a great deal of time in physiotherapy, speech therapy, osteopathic therapy, occupational therapy and behavioural therapy. The thesis explores how circus can open up a new world to such children, enabling them to take risks, physically and emotionally; to stretch the capacities of their bodies in an environment that enriches their social development. Not only do they gain in strength, coordination and physical awareness, they can also gain confidence, opportunities for creative expression and a sense of “fitting in”. For the parents and siblings of children with autism, circus training sessions provide respite and a chance to enjoy seeing their family member becoming involved with other children and achieving things that might not have seemed within their capabilities. There are frequently flow-on effects through improvements in autistic children’s skills and behaviours in daily life. Families can also become part of the “circus family” – sharing a sense of community with other families who understand the challenges that accompany life with an autistic child: a sense of isolation in the wider community, the frustrations, embarrassments and feelings of being judged. In the circus community, parents never need to apologise for their child in the same breath as introducing themselves.

Peter fell in love with juggling at the tender age of five after seeing his father juggle three balls. He has described this as the most impactful moment of his life; even more important than when he first discovered velcro shoelaces. He learned to juggle in elementary school and never looked back.     CREATIVE PLACE(S) | KNOWLEDGE BUILDING INITIATIVE CASE STUDY: BUNNELL STREET ARTS CENTER In 2013, Bunnell Street Arts Center in Homer, Alaska, received a $150,000 grant from ArtPlace America to develop an artists’ residency in its neighborhood, Old Town. While the language of creative placemaking is new, Bunnell Street Arts Center had long employed arts-and-culture for community development. Bunnell spent a year engaged in neighborhood meetings and advocacy to foment community engagement and complete ArtPlace’s rigorous application process. In their creative Kachemak Bay. placemaking proposal, Bunnell specifically sought to address two of Homer’s Old Town neighborhood’s challenges through the Old Town Initiative: transportation issues and a lack of both functionality and visual vibrancy to the neighborhood’s wayfinding. Old Town neighbors had been clear that traffic calming and better walkability were top priorities, with or without outside funding. Bunnell premised that an artist-in-residence program and public art initiatives could activate the neighborhood, offer artist-led activities to spur community engagement, and inspire a holistic approach to neighborhood change. With initial funding secured, what began as a project to address environmental and transportation systems blossomed into a neighborhood- and city-wide movement rooted in creative solutions, dynamic partnerships, and pride-of-place community ownership.
