Sugar and the Mint. Sugar and the Mint’s spirited take on folk and bluegrass excites audiences across the country. The band synthesizes genres into a sparkling repertoire of original songs, balancing first-time singalong hooks with robust musicality. Sugar and the Mint’s unique vocal approach features complex, ethereal harmonies supporting accessible melodies. Informed by everything from bluegrass to baroque to current pop and country, the traditional blend of guitar, violins, mandolin and bass instrumentation is anything but standard-fare acoustic music. In 2017, the band took first place in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest. The Arizona group has since toured coast to coast and recorded two albums: Just Past Midnight (2018) and Grape Flavored (2017). The original music on these records showcases the band’s energy, songwriting artistry, and fresh perspective on folk and bluegrass. Sugar and the Mint hails from Prescott, Arizona. The acoustic string quintet consists of Matt Tatum Haynes (mandolin, vocals), Johan Glidden (lead vocals, guitar, violin), Glory Glidden (violin, vocals), Keenan Hammack (guitar, vocals), and Cosimo Bohrman (bass, vocals). sugarandthemint.com

The High 48s. Since forming in Northeast Minneapolis in 2006, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude. They’re a band with one foot in tradition and the other in the world of music today, and one of the very few who can find an overlooked bluegrass classic in a song by M. Ward or the Clash then throw down hard on a standard by Bill Monroe. The High 48s are also a band of songwriters. Here, too, they take a modern approach, heeding the well-worn advice to writers: write what you know. Their songs ring true to their lives as northern city-folk rather than an imagined “sweet, sunny south” of coal mines and dark hollers. The band takes its name from railroad slang for the boxcars originally used to transport troops on the front lines in WWI that could carry 40 soldiers or 8 horses, and were later used in the US on fast-moving “hot shot” freight trains by train-hoppers looking for work during the Great Depression. thehigh48s.com

Shelby Lentz. While she may be petite in stature, Shelby Lentz has a voice that will fill any venue. Shelby's talent was recognized at an early age and by fourteen, she was singing the National Anthem at local sporting venues, performed for the first time at the Wild Bull Saloon and earned over 100,000 votes in Bob Kingsley's Future Star online competition. It would not take long before she was grabbing the attention of others in the industry and at just fifteen she opened at The State Theater in Kalamazoo for Warner Music artist, Frankie Ballard. It was also about this time that she began collaborating with local song writers on original music as well. After the diagnosis of Huntington’s Disease in her family, and being recently diagnosed herself, she began her own nonprofit, “Champions for HD” to help aid research as well as other local families struggling with this disease. This was named in honor of her song “Champion” that is now recognized as an HD power anthem and part of her musical proceeds go back to Champions for HD to further the fight against Huntington’s. Shelby performs a mixture of songs that delight all audiences of all ages. There is no doubt that this little girl packs a powerful punch as an experienced entertainer.

Phil Baker. For 30 years, Phil Baker has used music to educate, entertain, and enrich the lives of young people. Phil Baker is one of the most innovative and respected songwriters shaping children's music today. Known for his signature style - a red guitar, heartfelt lyrics, catchy tunes, and quality musicianship and production - Baker involves the children throughout his show. He has dedicated his life to strengthening communities through music and performance and has made an indelible mark on South Dakota's music scene as well as its cultural landscape. His dynamic presentations tap the potential of today's youth, inviting them to make a difference in their families, schools, and communities, while his infectious ability to connect with an audience through songs and activities leaves young people with the impression they can help make the world a better place. South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts. philbakermusic.com

Mogen’s Heroes. Mogen’s Heroes is a fine-tuned trio that has been pleasing Midwestern audiences since 1978. Like the South Dakota weather, they are apt to change styles instantly. Founded by Waubay, SD native John Mogen (keyboards), the group also features Redfield, SD native Bill Hoffman (drums) and Wagner, SD native Denny Gale (guitar). Gale’s writing style stems from three decades with The Associated Press. Hoffman’s incredibly versatile vocals highlight the Heroes’ harmonies, and Mogen’s one-third of a century in music education rounds out this trio’s personality. Mogen’s Heroes love to entertain a variety of listeners. This threesome thoroughly enjoys having fun with music, blending humor with harmonies to please all ages.

LIVING HISTORY AREA

The festival started in 1972 with a pioneer theme because of its location, and this area has become a mainstay of the BSAF. In 1976, as part of the National Bicentennial Celebration, a special area was set aside for historic traders and a muzzleloader target shoot. In 1984, the target shooting stopped and frontier crafts became the main attraction of the Living History Area. The Brookings Renegade Muzzleloaders Club will be manning the main gate and guiding the parking for the valid handicapped vehicles. The Silver Creek Mavericks will greet exhibitors at the West gate to direct them to their parking areas and assist with large parcel pick-up. The 13th U.S. Infantry/Fort Dakota will hold a brief flag raising ceremony in front of the Bandshell both Saturday and Sunday at 10am.

Entertaining thousands of children and adults in more than twenty years of performing, Peter Brunette is a dynamic, passionate performer. Peter fell in love with juggling at the tender age of five after seeing his father juggle three balls. He has described this as the most impactful moment of his life; even more important than when he first discovered velcro shoelaces. He learned to juggle in elementary school and never looked back. Peter is currently based in Omaha, Nebraska and juggling full time. He has made a name for himself as Nebraska’s juggler with signature tricks like blindfold knife juggling on a rolla bolla. His impressive skills and hilarious juggling shows have brought him national attention and performances throughout the country as well as at Omaha’s top venues. jugglerpeter.com Richard (Dick) Kapusta.
