Look next to the bulletin board in the wall pockets if you need one. ~ Amy Holland, Admissions and Development Director ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re-enrollment Deadline and the Weather If school is cancelled on Thursday but not Friday, or if there is a delayed opening on Friday, the deadline will remain Friday, February 14th at 5:00 pm. If school is cancelled on Friday for inclement weather, the re-enrollment deadline will be extended until Monday, February 24th at 5:00 pm. ~ Martha Harville, Business Manager Important Financial News Dear families: as you prepare to re-enroll, please remember that your account must have a zero balance or you must have a payment plan in place. I have placed statements in mailboxes this week. Please contact me if you need to make arrangements or wish to pay off your arrears. ~ Martha Harville, Business Manager Inclement Weather Policy 1. The policy has been reviewed based on the feedback that RWS has received. 2. A revision to the existing procedure will be implemented for next school year that will provide RWS with the flexibility to address an event on a daily basis rather than depending solely on Richmond Public School closing decisions. 3. April 26 at 8:30 pm You've never been to a school fundraiser quite like this. We've pulled out the stops for a 'Grown-Ups' night on the town. We have brought together international talent and performing artists from the RWS community to astound your senses for a great cause: Supporting our school. Behold our sultry torch songs, adult comedy, dazzling partner acrobatics, and circus antics in fishnet stockings. In addition, enjoy light h'ors d'oeuvres and a cash bar and shop the Silent Auction to benefit Waldorf! Showtime will run approximately two hours, including an intermission. Plant Zero, the event facility, is a beautifully renovated space in hip Old Manchester, and has abundant parking. Thanks for sharing, Terry!) o 6th Grade - Geometry in cool shapes, finished up South American geography, salsa class with MS3 o MS3 - Physiology through drawing and sculpting, high school interviews, tests and applications o After Care - lots of love and relationship building; they are like a family. Heads Committee - Working with faculty to determine with topics as well as trying to come up with ways to improve community participation in these events. Hearts Committee - Community socials have been successful. Men of Waldorf Social has been postponed to 2/13. Next month we will have the Family Contra Dance at the Lewis Ginter Rec Center on March 8th @ 6:00 pm. Watch for info on this. Playground Project - The Playground Committee will be meeting with the Faculty next week to present proposed plan. Work will then be prioritized to begin as the weather changes. PA Book Sale - It was a success earning over $250! Remaining books will either be put on consignment or donated. Discussed Inclement Weather Policy and Make up Days - RWS follows the Richmond Public School system for the 1st day of inclement weather. Make up days are built into the calendar. See the full minutes for details. It was decided that class reps would gather any additional questions or concerns to be compiled and forwarded to Admin, if necessary. Watercolor Workshop - We enjoyed learning about watercolor art through the Waldorf Curriculum and experienced making our own using circle blue and Cobalt blue. Upcoming Events Waldorf Men's Night out - February 13th - 6:00 pm Next PA Meeting - March 4th - 6:00 - 7:30 pm - Working with Beeswax ~ Kim Washburn, PA Moderator Waldorf Guys' Night Out - Rescheduled! Thursday, February 13th 6:00 - 9:00 pm Due to unforeseen circumstances, we must reschedule the "Waldorf Guys' Night Out" social originally set for this Thursday, February 6th. The new date is next Thursday, February 13th from 6:00-9:00 pm. The evening will still be hosted by Chet Knaup (RWS dad to kindergarteners Savannah and Orion and to baby Aurora) at the family's home, 2721 East Weyburn Road, Richmond, VA 23235. The gathering is informal. Stop in at any time, leave when you have to. Bring a snack or a beverage to share if you like. An update will be added to the Evite and it will be resent. Please RSVP to let us know if you can come on the new date once you receive it.

Meernik, Acting Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Boswell, Timothy. After the Planes. Doctor of Philosophy (English), May 2012, 343 pp., bibliography, 21 titles. The dissertation consists of a critical preface and a novel. The preface analyzes what it terms “polyvocal” novels, or novels employing multiple points of view, as well as “layered storytelling,” or layers of textuality within novels, such as stories within stories. Specifically, the first part of the preface discusses polyvocality in twenty-first century American novels, while the second part explores layered storytelling in novels responding to World War II or the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The preface analyzes the advantages and difficulties connected to these techniques, as well as their aptitude for reflecting the fractured, disconnected, and subjective nature of the narratives we construct to interpret traumatic experiences. It also acknowledges the necessity—despite its inherent limitations—of using language to engage with this fragmentation and cope with its challenges. The preface uses numerous novels as examples and case studies, and it also explores these concepts and techniques in relation to the process of writing the novel After the Planes. After the Planes depicts multiple generations of a family who utilize storytelling as a means to work through grief, hurt, misunderstanding, and loss—whether from interpersonal conflicts or from war. Against her father’s wishes, a young woman moves in with her nearly- unknown grandfather, struggling to understand the rifts in her family and how they have shaped her own identity.

    How circus training can enhance the well-being of autistic children and their families Kristy Danialle Seymour BA Creative Arts School of Humanities Griffith University Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts and Media with Honours July 2012 Abstract This project is concerned with how circus training can benefit children diagnosed on the autistic spectrum and, in turn, their families. Many “special needs” children spend a great deal of time in physiotherapy, speech therapy, osteopathic therapy, occupational therapy and behavioural therapy. The thesis explores how circus can open up a new world to such children, enabling them to take risks, physically and emotionally; to stretch the capacities of their bodies in an environment that enriches their social development. Not only do they gain in strength, coordination and physical awareness, they can also gain confidence, opportunities for creative expression and a sense of “fitting in”. For the parents and siblings of children with autism, circus training sessions provide respite and a chance to enjoy seeing their family member becoming involved with other children and achieving things that might not have seemed within their capabilities. There are frequently flow-on effects through improvements in autistic children’s skills and behaviours in daily life. Families can also become part of the “circus family” – sharing a sense of community with other families who understand the challenges that accompany life with an autistic child: a sense of isolation in the wider community, the frustrations, embarrassments and feelings of being judged. In the circus community, parents never need to apologise for their child in the same breath as introducing themselves.

Peter fell in love with juggling at the tender age of five after seeing his father juggle three balls. He has described this as the most impactful moment of his life; even more important than when he first discovered velcro shoelaces. He learned to juggle in elementary school and never looked back. In his teens he began performing for local parks, churches, and schools in his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Believing a college degree was necessary for success in life, he attended Hamilton College in upstate New York, and earned a degree in Biology because there was no juggling major.

    CREATIVE PLACE(S) | KNOWLEDGE BUILDING INITIATIVE CASE STUDY: BUNNELL STREET ARTS CENTER In 2013, Bunnell Street Arts Center in Homer, Alaska, received a $150,000 grant from ArtPlace America to develop an artists’ residency in its neighborhood, Old Town. While the language of creative placemaking is new, Bunnell Street Arts Center had long employed arts-and-culture for community development. Bunnell spent a year engaged in neighborhood meetings and advocacy to foment community engagement and complete ArtPlace’s rigorous application process. Bunnell’s overarching aim with the Bunnell Street Arts Center is located by a place called Bishop’s Beach, situated on the borderland of project was to promote neighborhood the Kenai River’s Dena’ina and the Sugpiaq, across stewardship through the arts. In their creative Kachemak Bay. placemaking proposal, Bunnell specifically sought to address two of Homer’s Old Town neighborhood’s challenges through the Old Town Initiative: transportation issues and a lack of both functionality and visual vibrancy to the neighborhood’s wayfinding. Old Town neighbors had been clear that traffic calming and better walkability were top priorities, with or without outside funding. Bunnell premised that an artist-in-residence program and public art initiatives could activate the neighborhood, offer artist-led activities to spur community engagement, and inspire a holistic approach to neighborhood change. With initial funding secured, what began as a project to address environmental and transportation systems blossomed into a neighborhood- and city-wide movement rooted in creative solutions, dynamic partnerships, and pride-of-place community ownership. Bunnell Street Arts Center’s creative placemaking continues today, while the following case study follows the ArtPlace-supported Old Town initiative, as chronicled by Asia Freeman, Bunnell’s Artistic/Executive Director, and Brianna Allen, Old Town Coordinator, in 2013-2014; and edited by Caitlin Strokosch.
