Renewable January 1st Published: Fax: 604/824-4303 Dee 1998 CANADA, V2R 1B1 Mar Jun. Sep. & Dec. Email: [email protected] Page 1 Web site http://home.pix.za/dw/dw000002/whitass/index.htm December is past half gone and I am just writing the last of the Newsletter!! Seems to have been the story all year this year. I managed to take some holidays in September and Patrick and I spent three weeks in England and Ireland. As usual I did not get to see half the people I had hoped to but did try to talk to quite a few people on the telephone. Did manage to do a bit of research while having a wonderful holiday. I was able to acquire several items of interest while in England and Ireland. I did find some elusive Guinan ancestors in Ireland which I was very pleased to find. In England I made copies of some of the Guildhall wills which added to that collection. I found a couple of Ralph Whitlock's books and was able to get copies of the portraits of Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675) and his father Sir James Whitlock (1570-1632) from the National Portrait gallery. I also brought back the forms for people to request copies of these through the mail if they wish to. I met with Robert Whitelocke Fountaine in Hertfordshire regarding the chart (R1926) showing his descent from Roger De la Beche circa 1200AD. Mr. Fountaine has had quite a bit of correspondence resulting from his letter in the Saga magazine. He made a copy of the chart for us and promised to pass on any queries for additional information. One thing I was not able to do while in England was to view the restoration work being done on the Whitlock Memorial at Fawley in Buckinghamshire. For new subscribers this is the tomb of Sir lames Whitlock & his wife Elizabeth Bulstrode who died in the 1630's. The Whitlock Family Association raised several hundred pounds towards the £10,000+ cost of restoring the tomb. We actually went to Fawley on our way back from Windsor Castle but we had not been able to pre- plan the visit and the Church was locked. I will be following up with the Fawley Parish Council to get an update on the repairs. Needless to say I have not been able to catch-up yet with the stack of mail that built up while we were away. Spare time seems to be at an ever increasing premium these days. On a personal note, for the next while I am going to serve as Interim General Manager for the company I work for and it is going to mean I will be back to doing quite a bit of travel again. This is going to mean a further cut in family history time. This is on top of the changes I made following the separation from my wife in 1996 and the increase in volume due to the Web Site. Hopefully it will just mean more delay in response time and I that I will be able to keep up with the enquiries and requests for information. As many of you know I am only 49 so retirement is a few years off yet so can't count on that either. Please take this into account if the reply to your email or letter is not as timely as you are used to. Patience is a virtue. For this issue of the Newsletter I have had to cut the mail off in mid November so quite a bit of information has been delayed until the March 1999 issue. One of the highlights of this issue is the collection of Hampshire wills (R1911-R1925) sent in by Frederick J. Whitlock. The wills are modern but many filled in several blanks. Most relate to the Pitton, Wiltshire families. I was interested to see the advertisement by the Whitlock Realty Co. (R1929) sent in by Andrew Whitlock. The details about the Whitlocks of Wokingham, Berkshire coat of arms from 1592 (R1935) sent in by Marianne Whitlock, indicates the arms were issued to the Richard Whitlock who left for Prussia in 1580 as he is the only Richard son of Richard at this time period. The unreleased birth and marriage information (X2698-X2699) sent in by Valerie Anderson added quite a bit of new information to our files and enabled me to connect quite a few families together. The letter from John R. Whitlock (X2700) about the Cracker and Heaman families added great new detail to the collateral lines of the Langtree, Devon families. I was very interested to see the detail from Lawrence Otis regarding the Witlox families of London, Ontario. The family was apparently Dutch so will be interesting to see if we can Whitlock Family Newsletter 11 Vo1.17 No. 4 Dee 1998 Page 2 I was very interested to see.the detail from Lawrence Otis regarding the Witlox families of London Ontario. .The family was apparently Dutch so will be interesting to see if we can deterrmne the ongm of the name and If there ISa connectron to the Whitlocks of Prussia Poland and Sweden. ' Mary Maxfield's data on the Whitlocks of St.Martinsville, Louisiana who were involved in the early settlement of Texas (X2740-X2741) added interesting new detail to that part of the family. There were several proud grandparents and great-grandparents keeping us up to date on the latest additions to their families. Thanks to Maisie Whitelock of Hornchurch, Essex plus Sara Smith of Oxford, Mississippi for information on new grandchildren. Also to my sister, Necia for the first great-grandchild in our part of the family!! Not sure how happy I am a being a great-great- Uncle!! Welcome to new subscribers and our thanks to everyone who contributed material to our files this year. It is your information that builds our collection and is shared with others. The amount of information that continues flow in is huge and hopefully we have been able to help many on the trail to finding their ancestors. Louise Birchfield continues to work on entering all the pre-1800 references to the Whitlocks of Virginia in a file. As I get a chance I forward the next section to be added. The file has been sent to several working on the Virginia families and it is already a primary resource tool. Our census collection continues to grow and be a very useful tool for researchers. Our goal for 1999 is to add the complete 1881 census extracts that have been released by the Latter Day Saints Church. This will give us the same type of source for Britain that the 1900 US census is for America. These records are available at most Family History centres but we are going to require some volunteers to collect copies together. If anyone is wilhng to take on a county please let me know and I will let you know which counties are still to be done. Updates to the Marriage Register have been accumulated since the last page was attached to the Newsletter. I will publish them from time to time. The Birth Register WIllcontinue with the 1999 Newsletters. The aim is to eventually print these collections separately as sources for researchers. For the time being they will attached to the back to each issue of the Newsletter. Enclosed with this issue of the Newsletter is a financial statement for 1998 and a renewal form for 1999. The cost is held at $10 (£4) per year and I hope you will be able to continue your support for the coming year. There has been some confusion regarding paying with British stamps. I can still use stamps if it is more convenient for you but were we getting too many so I am asking as many as possible to .ray by personal cheques in sterling. Please remember to make cheques payable to Peter WJutlock. Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year. • Devon Historic Churches Day the Worlingtons Were Wonderful
Devon Historic Churches Day The Worlingtons were wonderful – again….. Steve Baber led The Charge again, supported so superbly by our Churchwardens Patrick Brook and Ray Bassingthwaighte with Michael Wall venturing into ‘Outer Limits’ all to raise funds for our Devon churches. There is clearly something very special about living in Worlington that gives so many of our residents the energy to go the extra mile for so many good causes – and for the many who have supported them with sponsorship for their endeavours. As County Organiser I was ‘out and about’ (by car of course!) with visits to various churches. Each year I choose a different area of the county and this year most of it was spent in Cadbury Deanery – starting with an 8am visit to Kennerleigh Church – then Sandford and Crediton before spending time with churches in central Exeter which were taking part in their annual Pilgrimage – the highlight of which was at the Cathedral where Bishop Martin Shaw entertained us amusingly as always over some splendid refreshments. Back on the road for me, with a visit to Cheriton Fitzpaine, Stockleigh English, Wolfardisworthy, Morchard Bishop and Lapford before crossing the border into the South Molton Deanery to visit Chulmleigh where they were not only held a coffee morning but also in the afternoon some exciting abseiling from the church tower. I then visited Chawleigh before returning to our Worlingtons. Altogether a most rewarding day, giving me the opportunity to meet good folk in each location and discuss the challenges they had with maintaining their churches – but everyone I met was happy and supportive - despite the heavy showers.

This Mid Devon Infrastructure Plan is part of the council’s delivery strategy for implementing this requirement, initially forming part of the evidence base for the Mid Devon Local Development Framework, Mid Devon Infrastructure Plan in particular the Allocations and Infrastructure Development Plan Document. It takes account of the strategic planning framework set out in the Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West and the adopted Mid Devon Core Strategy. Policy COR1 of the Core Strategy sets out the basis for creation of sustainable communities, and the provision of infrastructure forms one of the key planks in that work. Core Strategy Policy COR8 gives guidance on the role of planning and development in that provision, making it clear that development and infrastructure planning should be co-ordinated, and that there is a role for development to contribute to the cost of new or improved infrastructure. 1.2 The Mid Devon Infrastructure Plan sets out the following: • What infrastructure improvements will support the additional development in Mid Devon, when these are likely to be required and who will provide them. • What resources will be required for these improvements, and whether these are likely to be available to infrastructure providers.

Needless to say the Whitlocks are my father's family but it is an item related to my mother s family that I want to start with. My mother's name is Nora Kathleen and her maiden n~me was Guinan. Her father.was Timothy Joseph Howard O'Farrell Guinan (1878-1952) of Birr, Tipperary, EI~e. Grandpa qum~ had a famous, no~oriousor infamous (depending on your point of view) cousm, Mary Cecilia Guman aka Texas Guman. Grandpa maintained Texas was a cousin but the actual connection has not been proven. Grandpa did visit Texas just before her death in Vancouver in 1933. The reason for including this in the Newsletter is I recently read Louise Berliner's book Texas Guinan, Queen of the Nightclubs and it got me interested again. I also have George Baxt's book The Dorothy Parker Murder Case in which Texas plays a fictitious role. Texas Guinan supposedly made over 100 movies most of which were silents. There is also a movie starring Betty Hutton called The Incendiary Blonde which is based on Texas' life. What I am looking for is any anecdotes anyone might have regarding Texas.
