Whitlock Family Newsletter ISSN:0835:67~ WHITLOCK FAMILY NEWSLETTER 47644 Forester Road Subscription $10.00 per annum Tel:604/824-7450 Vol.16 No. 2 RR#2, Sardis, B.C. Renewable January 1st Fax: 604/824-4303 June 1997 CANADA, V2R IBl Published: MarJun.Sep.& Dec. Email:[email protected] Page 1 I am going to start this issue not talking about Whitlocks at all, but there is a round about connec~IOn. Needless to say the Whitlocks are my father's family but it is an item related to my mother s family that I want to start with. My mother's name is Nora Kathleen and her maiden n~me was Guinan. Her father.was Timothy Joseph Howard O'Farrell Guinan (1878-1952) of Birr, Tipperary, EI~e. Grandpa qum~ had a famous, no~oriousor infamous (depending on your point of view) cousm, Mary Cecilia Guman aka Texas Guman. Grandpa maintained Texas was a cousin but the actual connection has not been proven. Grandpa did visit Texas just before her death in Vancouver in 1933. The reason for including this in the Newsletter is I recently read Louise Berliner's book Texas Guinan, Queen of the Nightclubs and it got me interested again. I also have George Baxt's book The Dorothy Parker Murder Case in which Texas plays a fictitious role. Texas Guinan supposedly made over 100 movies most of which were silents. There is also a movie starring Betty Hutton called The Incendiary Blonde which is based on Texas' life. What I am looking for is any anecdotes anyone might have regarding Texas. Any references in your research to people VIsitingTexas's New York nightclubs or seeing her on tour. Any help is appreciated. A bit of trivia: Texas is still remembered today in the Whoopi Goldberg character "Guinan" on the Star Trek series. Back to the Whitlocks but staying with the Texas theme. Topping my list of additions this issue has to be Louise Birchfield's copies (R1670-R1671) from the Texas archives relating to William Whitlock (1784-1835) who left St.Martinville, Louisiana in 1824 to settle in Texas. William Whitlock was one of Stephen F. Austin's 300 families who were granted land by the Government of Mexico. The copies are of the original Spanish documents mentioned in the material from Mary Maxfield in 1992. See December 1992 WFN article [11:4:5] "William Whitlock, Liberty, Texas". Each document has the English translation. Many thanks to Louise for adding these to our collection. Also from Louise is a copy of the will of Grizel (Coleman) Whitlock who died in 1759 (R1649). Grizel heads the WHITLOCK.33 family and while we are fairly sure her maiden name was Coleman we still have been unable to determine the name of her husband. A transript of this will is included in this issue. Louise has added a great deal of Coleman research to our files trying to track this down. Louise also sent the collection of Confederate Pension Applications from Texas (R1685-RI689) and a very interesting series of maps (R1695) from Sherry Nicols' not quite published book on the Coleman family of Virginia. The maps trace the changes in the county boundaries over the first 140 years of Virginia's development. These rough maps will be a big help to anyone researching in Colonial Virginia trying to keep track of land transactions over the 17th & 18th centunes. I was very interested to receive the Bounty Land File of Nathaniel Whitlock (R1654) from Doug Crosswhite. I had seen reference to these documents but had never actually seen one. It gives quite a bit of detail of interest to family historians including date and place of marriage. Those interested in the Whitlock cars will be pleased to see David Whitlock of Glasgow has added copies (R1656) of the Nov. 1985 issue of The Automobile. This is a very detailed history of the Whitlock-Lawton company that made Whitlock cars. Another gem from Geneva Campbell is a copy (R165?) of the will of.John Webbs of Halifax Co., Virginia. This will shows Susannah Webb who married Thom~s Whltl?ck w:asstill alive m 1794 and confirms the Thomas Whitlock who married Judith Carter m 1792 IS a different Thomas Whitlock. A transcript of this will is also included with this issue. Several old letters were added to our collection. Of particular interest are the ones from Bill King (R1659-R1666) including a couple written during the Civil War. Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.16 No. 2 June 1997 Page 2 Those working of the Union Co., South Carolina families will no doubt be pleased to see Barbara Roesch's copies (R1667) of the family Bible of Harvey Duncan Whitlock. These added many missing dates and names to this part of the family. Our particular thanks to Lucille Whitlock for donating over three hundred pages of family group sheets detailing the complete descent from General Scott Whitlock of Monona Co., Iowa. A prodigious job indeed! Lots more certificates and Newspaper clippings - all of which are appreciated. The Main Lines in this issue reach #200. They are becoming a research tool on their own. My continued thanks to everyone who sent material in. There are a couple of tasks I am wondering if someone might be interested in taking on. The first hopefully is fairly simple. I am looking for someone with access to an LDS library willing to make copies of the 1881 British census index that is nearing completion. The index is on fiche and available at most Genealogical libraries. We have a few counties covered but would like to add the complete collection to our files. I will cover the costs of photocopies and mailing from the WFA funds. If you can take on this task let me know and I will give you a list of the counties that have been done. The second item I am wondering about is can we set up the Whitlock Family Association with a Home Page on the Internet? I am no expert on this and currently only use the system for email. I understand we could set up access to items such as our Marriage and Will indexes, including the Birth index and GRO index which have not yet been printed. It would also be useful to researchers to have access to the source files that are listed in the Newsletter. Each of these is in its own file and is updated with each issue of the Newsletter. Depending on how much memory is made available to us we could also add the family charts. What I am looking for is someone with the expertise to design and set up the Home Page. I think I can maintain it if shown how. Any ideas? While on the subject of indexes. I have updated the index to the Newsletter articles and if anyone would like a copy of this let me know. I would like to eventually have the actual issues of the Newsletter indexed but this is a larger task that would take a few more volunteers. A comment about cheques: I run the Whitlock Family Association through a personal account as the only other alternative is a full business account which is expensive. The bank has reminded me that cheques should be payable to me personally and not the Whitlock Family Association or Whitlock Family Newsletter. Most cheques that come this way are the first contact cheques and subsequent ones are payable to me personally but I promised the Bank I would remind everyone again. We had a record 138 subscribers last year and with 136 already this year I would say we are headed for another record year. Good luck in your own endeavours and many thanks to everyone for sharing. Seems to have been the story all year this year. I managed to take some holidays in September and Patrick and I spent three weeks in England and Ireland. As usual I did not get to see half the people I had hoped to but did try to talk to quite a few people on the telephone. Did manage to do a bit of research while having a wonderful holiday. I was able to acquire several items of interest while in England and Ireland. I did find some elusive Guinan ancestors in Ireland which I was very pleased to find. In England I made copies of some of the Guildhall wills which added to that collection. I found a couple of Ralph Whitlock's books and was able to get copies of the portraits of Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675) and his father Sir James Whitlock (1570-1632) from the National Portrait gallery. I also brought back the forms for people to request copies of these through the mail if they wish to. I met with Robert Whitelocke Fountaine in Hertfordshire regarding the chart (R1926) showing his descent from Roger De la Beche circa 1200AD.
