Submitting an Opinion to Oregon Newspapers While every has slightly different guidelines, generally, a letter to the editor is written in response to a previously published article. It is also normally shorter than an op-ed which does not always have to be in response to a previously published article. Letters to the Editor Submit to: • Email: [email protected] • Mailing: Letters to the editor, The Oregonian 1500 S.W. First Ave., Suite 400, Portland, OR 97201 Word Limit: 250 Include: Full address and daytime phone number, for verification only. Letters may be edited for length and clarity.

Op-Ed Submit to: • Email: [email protected] o Submission should be in the body of the message (not attached) • Mailing: Op-Ed Editor, The Oregonian, 1500 S.W. First Ave., Suite 400, Portland, OR 97201 Word Limit: 500 Notes: They do not respond to every submission they receive and calls to check on the status are strongly discouraged. Op-eds are most often rejected simply because of competition (they receive many submissions). They also could be rejected due to length (shorter is better), being repetitive of previously published articles, lack universal interest, or are national issues instead of local issues. If a submission is accepted, authors will be called within a week.

Op-Ed (Called Guest Viewpoint) https://www.registerguard.com/opinion/viewpoint Submit to: Email: [email protected] Mailing: Anna Glavash, 3500 Chad Drive, Eugene, Ore., 97408 Word Limit: 700 (500-700 with 600 being ideal) Notes: Preference given to local expert writers on local topics. Prefer email submissions. Viewpoints should be of the author, not their organization. They need a sentence or two of biographical information about the writer. If they publish your guest opinion, they will need a photo of you and brief information about you and your relationship to the subject being discussed. Authors can make one submission every 60 days. Bend Bulletin (Bend) Bend Bulletin takes letters published under the heading of “My Nickel’s Worth” and longer pieces called “Guest Columns.” Letters (Called My Nickel’s Worth) • Word limit: 250 Guest Columns • Word limit: 550-650 Submit to: • Email: [email protected] • Mailing: My Nickel’s Worth/Guest Column, P.O.
