Savage 1 “Who’s gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It’s chocolate, it’s peppermint ─it’s delicious!” While this may sound like your typical television commercial, you can thank Jerry Seinfeld and his butter fingers for what is actually one of the most renowned lines in television history. As part of a 1993 episode of Seinfeld , subsequently known as “The Junior Mint,” these infamous words have certainly gained a bit more attention than the show’s writers had originally bargained for. In fact, those of you who were annoyed by last year’s focus on a McDonald’s McFlurry on NBC’s 30 Rock may want to take up your beef with Seinfeld’s producers for supposedly showing marketers the way to the future ("Brand Practice: Product Integration Is as Old as Hollywood Itself").

Oshkosh Scholar Submission – Volume VI – 2011 How Nothing Became Something: The Evolution of Seinfeld Eric Balkman, author Justine Stokes, Radio-TV-Film, faculty adviser Eric Balkman will graduate in December 2011 with a double major in journalism and radio-TV- film. His research on Seinfeld began when he was a sophomore at UW-Fox Valley as a term paper for a philosophy of the arts class. This article was his final project for Justine Stokes’ television genre and aesthetics class. Justine Stokes is the director of television services for UW Oshkosh. She earned her M.A. in mass communication at Miami University (Ohio) and her B.A. in mass communication and theatre from Morningside College (Iowa). Stokes directed and produced “Affinity,” which won an honorable mention at the 2007 Wonder Women Film Competition in New York City. “Affinity” also won AfterElton.com’s Inaugural Short Film Competition. Stokes has directed and produced a wide variety of local television as well. Abstract This thesis argues that no one factor by itself contributed to the explosion of Seinfeld into pop culture, and no single cause has ultimately placed it in the pantheon of the greatest situation comedies in television history. Through extensive research and exhaustive viewing, three of the minor factors that led Seinfeld to prominence were ultimately being the beneficiary of riding the proverbial coattails of Cheers to build a following, being a fledgling show on a foundering network that decided to take a chance on it in order to spurn its demise and not being written to appeal to a mass audience.

  • Challenges and Strategies of Subtitling Humour: a Case Study of the American Sitcom Seinfeld, with Particular Reference to English and Arabic
Challenges and Strategies of Subtitling Humour: A Case Study of the American Sitcom Seinfeld, with Particular Reference to English and Arabic Adel Awadh A Alharthi School of Languages University of Salford, Salford, UK Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, August 2016 ABSTRACT The present study investigates issues in the subtitling of humour in the American sitcom, Seinfeld. The study also identifies the subtitling strategies used by Arab translators to solve the technical, linguistic and cultural problems of translating humour in Seinfeld, and it uncovers the factors that might have affected the subtitlers’ decisions. The study draws on the General Theory of Verbal Humour (GTVH; Attardo & Raskin 1991, Attardo 1994, Attardo 2001, Attardo 2002) and Pedersen’s (2005) model of subtitling cultural references. Applying the GTVH and Pedersen’s (2005) model to the subtitling of humour between English and Arabic will test their reliability (i.e., the analysis of the data using these theories will reveal their strengths and weaknesses). The findings show that different types of humour were used in the selected data (eight types). These types were rendered into Arabic using a variety of strategies which were governed by a number of parameters, including cultural and linguistc differences between the source and target languages and cultures, intersemiotic redundancy, intertextuality, media-specific constraints, viewers’ knowledge of the show, and the simplicity of the humour in the source text. The Arab subtitlers managed, in many instances, to translate humour successfully into Arabic. However, some instances of humour that contained cultural references, wordplay, and catchphrases proved to be more challenging.
