Impacts of Aviation Emissions on Near-Airport Residential Air Quality Neelakshi Hudda,* Liam W

Durant Cite This: https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.0c01859 Read Online ACCESS Metrics & More Article Recommendations *sı Supporting Information ABSTRACT: Impacts of aviation emissions on air quality in and around residences near airports remain underexamined. We measured gases (CO, CO2, NO, and NO2) and particles (black carbon, particle-bound aromatic hydrocarbons, fine particulate matter fi (PM2.5), and ultra ne particles (reported using particle number concentrations (PNC) as a proxy)) continuously for 1 month at a residence near the Logan International Airport, Boston. The residence was located under a flight trajectory of the most utilized runway configuration. We found that when the residence was downwind of the airport, the concentrations of all gaseous and particulate pollutants (except PM2.5) were 1.1- to 4.8-fold higher than when the residence was not downwind of the airport. Controlling for runway usage and meteorology, the impacts were highest during overhead landing operations: average PNC was 7.5-fold higher from overhead landings versus takeoffs on the closest runway. Infiltration of aviation-origin emissions resulted in indoor PNC that were comparable to ambient concentrations measured locally on roadways and near highways. In addition, ambient NO2 concentrations at the residence exceeded those measured at regulatory monitoring sites in the area including near-road monitors. Our results highlight the need for further characterization of outdoor and indoor impacts of aviation emissions at the neighborhood scale to more accurately estimate residential exposures. -

Savage 1 “Who’s gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It’s chocolate, it’s peppermint ─it’s delicious!” While this may sound like your typical television commercial, you can thank Jerry Seinfeld and his butter fingers for what is actually one of the most renowned lines in television history. As part of a 1993 episode of Seinfeld , subsequently known as “The Junior Mint,” these infamous words have certainly gained a bit more attention than the show’s writers had originally bargained for. In fact, those of you who were annoyed by last year’s focus on a McDonald’s McFlurry on NBC’s 30 Rock may want to take up your beef with Seinfeld’s producers for supposedly showing marketers the way to the future ("Brand Practice: Product Integration Is as Old as Hollywood Itself"). -
The Beard Family Manuscript Collection Description and Finding
The Beard Family Manuscript Collection Description and Finding Aid 1.3 linear feet (4 file boxes) Processor: Zinaida Tsemel Date of processing: 2014 Acquisition: The Beard Papers were received by the Norwalk Public Library from the Norwalk Museum during the restructuring of the Museum in 2013. Access: There are no restrictions to items in this collection. Permission to Publish: Requests for permission to publish from the collection should be made to the Norwalk History Room. Copyright: Norwalk Public Library does not hold the copyright on the materials in the collection. Introduction The Beards were a prominent family in Norwalk in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Martha Beard whose husband died on the passage to America emigrated from England in 1639 with six children. From these Beards of Milford descended the Beards of Norwalk. Algernon E. Beard built a house on Flax Road in Norwalk in 1842. This house called “Rockcliffe” was the grandest of the Greek Revival houses in the city. A. E. Beard was a wholesale distributor of shoes which he purchased from independent local craftsmen and sold along the Atlantic coast from Boston to Richmond. By 1839 he also began buying and selling hats. Algernon Beard dealt heavily in furs as well, selling them to hat makers and thus making money on both ends of the transaction. By 1840 beaver fur-felt hats had gone out of fashion, as men of means came to prefer silk top hats, but when the Hungarian patriot and reformer Louis Kossuth visited the USA, fur-felt hats became popular once more. -
Which Seinfeld Character Are You?
EPISODE 181: THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MEETING WHICHWHICH SEINFELDSEINFELD CHARACTERCHARACTER AREARE YOU?YOU? In our business dealings, we are often guilty of just not listening. We come to the table with an agenda—a new product, a new service—and wait while a prospect or existing client tells us what’s going on with his or her business. At some point, that person will pause—and we pounce with our spiel. This approach rarely works - successful business development requires some level of rapport and relationship building. As in all aspects of life, this can mean dealing with those who may not share your views or approach. In order to adapt quickly and improvise in these instances, it’s helpful to understand people’s communication and personality styles. There are a number of tests that can help us understand the personality and communication styles of others, including the popular DISC model. This model has four quadrants: dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness. Influence and steadiness are on the right side of the brain, and dominance and conscientiousness are on the left side. Understanding someone’s dominant quadrant can help you find a way to work more effectively with them. UNDERSTANDING WHAT SEINFELD YOUR SITCOM CAST Now that you understand where you fall QUADRANT ARE YOU? within the quadrants, you can begin to think about how to work and respond to any cast of characters you may come I’ll let you in on an interesting tidbit, successful sitcoms often across. Friction will naturally arise include a character from each of the following quadrants, because these are people with opposite because the resulting friction tends to be funny. -

The Dealership of Tomorrow 2.0: America’S Car Dealers Prepare for Change
The Dealership of Tomorrow 2.0: America’s Car Dealers Prepare for Change February 2020 An independent study by Glenn Mercer Prepared for the National Automobile Dealers Association The Dealership of Tomorrow 2.0 America’s Car Dealers Prepare for Change by Glenn Mercer Introduction This report is a sequel to the original Dealership of Tomorrow: 2025 (DOT) report, issued by NADA in January 2017. The original report was commissioned by NADA in order to provide its dealer members (the franchised new-car dealers of America) perspectives on the changing automotive retailing environment. The 2017 report was intended to offer “thought starters” to assist dealers in engaging in strategic planning, looking ahead to roughly 2025.1 In early 2019 NADA determined it was time to update the report, as the environment was continuing to shift. The present document is that update: It represents the findings of new work conducted between May and December of 2019. As about two and a half years have passed since the original DOT, focused on 2025, was issued, this update looks somewhat further out, to the late 2020s. Disclaimers As before, we need to make a few things clear at the outset: 1. In every case we have tried to link our forecast to specific implications for dealers. There is much to be said about the impact of things like electric vehicles and connected cars on society, congestion, the economy, etc. But these impacts lie far beyond the scope of this report, which in its focus on dealerships is already significant in size. Readers are encouraged to turn to academic, consulting, governmental and NGO reports for discussion of these broader issues. -
The (Im)Possible Gift of Education Denise Egéa Nazarbayev University
Denise Egéa 385 The (Im)possible Gift of Education Denise Egéa Nazarbayev University Cecilia Diego writes, “Gifting in education is impossible.” I would like, if I may, begin by looking at this word “gifting.” According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “gift” as a verb has been used since the seventeenth century. Like the noun “gift,” it comes from the Old English asgift, which meant “payment for a wife,” or in the plural form, “wedding,” with its implication of dowries. In Middle Dutch and Old High German, the word had the same meaning associated with monetary value. In the History of France, we find the following sentence: “Parents were prohibited from selling, gifting, or pledging their children”1 (rather shocking, as it implies that they did, but it is still happening in some countries). Then, “gift” as a verb fell into disuse until 1924, when the United States Congress introduced a “gift tax.” Repealed in 1926, it was revised, updated, and, in 1932, was reinstated. This tax was levied by the Internal Revenue Service “on the transfer of property by one individual to another while receiving nothing, or less than full value, in return.”2 Note that this “gift tax” was “receiving nothing … in return.” When the tax code changed, from the “gift tax” came the expression “gifting money.” Mostly confined to the context of taxes, a 1995 episode of Seinfeld brought it again to attention, when the words “re-gift,” “de-gift”, and “re-gifter” were repeatedly used, following the passing off of an unwanted gift (a label-maker).3 By 2009, the word had gained enough traction for Ellen DeGeneres to center one of her monologues on “gifting,” and “re-gifting gifts.”4 So far, what characterizes “gifting” from the origin of the word “gift” and its association with “payment” and “dowry” through “gift tax” and from the notion of “re-gifting” is its reference to money in one form or another.
