The information contained in the published edition is fairly consistent with the draft. Capters 15 - 21, 27 and 31 do not appear in the final edition, the chapter numbering system and, in some cases, the layout has been altered but any other variances are slight. This material is found in Volume 15, page 37. The International Affairs Series Correspondence was originally found in 6 series and these are indicated numerically in brackets after the name of the correspondent. -vii- Interviews With Canadian Figures, 1930-1932 The following preface was prepared by Escott Reid in 1961 as an explanation of the research project he had undertaken. From the summer of 1930 when I returned to Canada from Oxford to the summer of 1932 when I became the first national secretary of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs I was studying various aspects of Canadian political parties under a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship in the social sciences. I kept notes of talks which I had with about eighty people. I used to type out my recollection of a talk as soon as I could get back to my typewriter. This volume is a complete, unedited transcript of those notes. It was copied from the original set of notes by an Indian stenographer in New Dehli in the spring of 1957. I have not been able to check it against the original which must be among my papers stored in Ottawa. The changes which I have made in the text as typed by the Indian stenographer are marked in red. (There is one exception to this: the first interview, which is one with J.W. Dafoe on August 28, 1930. My original record consists of pencilled notes which my Indian stenographer found difficulty in deciphering. Since I had to make so many changes in this text I have had it retyped.) The interviews have been arranged in order of their date. There is only one interview in 1930, the one with J.W. Dafoe. This took place when I went to Winnipeg to get married. I arrived in Winnipeg three days before the wedding and the day after my arrival George Ferguson of the then Manitoba Free Press took me in to meet Dafoe and I had about an hour's talk with him. The next two interviews, with John Stevenson, then Canadian correspondent of the London Times, and J.S. Woodsworth, took place in March of 1931 in Ottawa where my wife and I stayed from about February to June. Then follow the interviews I had during the summer of 1931, first in Western Canada and then in the Maritime Provinces. I started my Western tour in Winnipeg and then went to Regina, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Baldworth and Kenaston, back to Regina, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, back to Vancouver, and then Edmonton. These interviews took place from July 7 to September 10, 1931. I started my Maritime tour at Campellton, N.B., and went on to Fredericton, Saint John, Charlottetown, Sydney, Antigonish, New Glasgow and Halifax. These interviews took place from September 27, 1930 to October 16, 1931. The next set of interviews took place the following summer in Ontario and Quebec. I started in Toronto and then went to London, Windsor, Kingsville, St. Thomas, Peterboro [sic], Kingston, Brockville, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec. These interviews took place from June 8, 1932 to July 17, 1932. I had intended to write a book on Canadian political parties. But I tried to cover too broad an area and too long a period of history and I got bogged down in a detailed investigation of the changes in the regional and racial bases of party strength from Confederation on as reflected in the votes cast in the general elections. -viii- The following articles of mine on Canadian politics were published: "The Rise of National Parties in Canada".
