Today we welcome Manurewa AFC players, coaches and supporters to Shepherds Park. We have enjoyed some great battles over the years and I am sure that today will be no exception.

A huge thanks to the management committee and team of volunteers who give so much of themselves to the club to make it successful. A further thanks to the support of our sponsors and members of the Kaipatiki Local Board who have invested in new playing surfaces and lights for the lower fields.

I look forward to seeing you in the clubrooms for a debrief over a bite to eat and something to wash it down.

4 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz FIRST TEAM REPORT Welcome to Shepherds Park Match Day Offcials and to Hoani Edwards and his charges, to what I’m sure will be a frantic and physical matchup! Birko’s nemisis from 2011 in both the league and , good luck today in what hopefully entertains the loyal supporters from both clubs. First, Birko sees the return of a number of 2012’s Div 1 winning squad with the addition of both youth and experience. A big thank you must go out to those loyal ‘red army’ supporters who have travelled with us to our first three away games! This support has helped the boys come back with 7 points on the road and the opportunity to show their stuff on this brand spanking new Shepherds #1 pitch, whose work has been in progress since prior to Christmas. Great to be at “the home of football” for the first time in 2013. The Road So Far ... 6-04-13 - vs Three Kings at Seymour Park, Pah Road. This was a physically tough game that saw the teams hit the shed at 0-0. The second stanza bought joy to the home-side first with Birko playing well and perserverance to score the equaliser in the 87’ from the head of Sam Jasper. great start to the season. 13-04-13 - vs East Coast Bays at Bay City Park. The only local derby that we face in this league. Birko went to the break with a 0-1 lead thanks to a Jack Hobo penalty. Bays came back to equalise until the exerienced returning Stuart Hogg got a head to a corner in added time for the winner! 20-04-13 - vs Onehunga Sports at Waikaraka Park. On the first winter day of the season, Birko had a 1-2 half-time lead with goals from Bill Tuiloma and Sam Jasper. The second 45’ or 50’ saw another 5 goals, 3 to Birko through Sam Jenkins, Godwin Darkwa and a Jack Hobo penalty. Another good result away from home! With still a long season ahead this start does need to be built on with consistency, that club support can only encourage! Thank you to Dave and his Committee/team fo their efforts. Heather, Nicky and Guppy for their work with the programme. Bill and Tracy behind the bar, Jimmy and Gareth and crew for the refurb. This all adds to the ambience and aura the club offers to all members. Enjoy today and catch up wth some banter in the bar after the game. www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 7 BIRKO RESSIES V Birkenhead Reserves Seymour Park 6/04/2013 The weather and pitch were both perfect for the opening game of the 2013 season. Fielding a strong side the boys got off to a strong start and after 15 minutes were dominating possession. Three King’s defence was being propped up by their keeper who pulled off some excellent saves early on to deny us a goal. However the continued pressure eventually paid off when one of their defenders handballed inside the penalty area. Whilst the referee did not spot the offence, our linesman did - 1 nil! Rodrigo slotted home from the spot. Unfortunately ten minutes later on, one of Three King’s rare forays into our half resulted in another penalty. A wayward cross to no-one in particular caught Mauri on the arm and the equaliser was well taken. Rodrigo had the chance to increase our lead just before half-time from the penalty spot after a foul in the box but blasted the ball over the top. The story of our day! The second half saw us pile on more and more pressure with nothing to show for it. Their goalkeeper continued to throw himself around like an acrobat and many clear cut opportunities sailed high and wide - 22 shots on goal throughout the game. One all the final score. Given this was the first game we were happy with the point and the way that we performed. There were stand out performances from Jono, Rodrigo, Ash; Drew who was named man of the match.

East Coast Bays V Birkenhead Reserves Bay City Park 13/04/2013 This game was an early chance in the season to test ourselves given the Bay’s reputation. Overheard comments from their dressing room suggested that they had a low opinion of our squad. Five minutes into the game they probably felt justified in their thoughts as a through ball from their midfield ended up in our net. However, that was to be the last time that they contested the game. To their credit our boys rallied strongly and picked up from the previous week. The back four led by the more seasoned heads of Mauri and Ash kept control and Jono, Rodrigo and Paul ran their legs off in the midfield. This allowed Harry BR to show his talent moving the ball quickly and accurately, making the opposition chase shadows. Possession and dominance eventually paid off and a clumsy challenge in the box resulted in a penalty. Rodrigo’s previous week’s miss meant that Harry was on penalty duty and he duly slotted home; 1 – 1! The goal served to spur us on and 15 minutes later a pinpoint accurate pass out of midfield found Paul Park as he broke through the defence to slot home what was to be the winning goal. Just rewards for a lot of running and hard work. The second half was a repeat of the first and we continued to pile on pressure without breaking the net. The best final effort was from Paul Park again. Having received the ball on the edge of the box his subsequent goal bound shot was tipped over the bar by another athletic keeper. First win and away from home against an overly confident opposition - a good feeling! 8 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz Stand out performances from Jono, Harry BR, Jack Caunter and Drew. Harry was the well deserved player of the day. Onehunga Sports V Birkenhead Reserves Waikaraka Park 20/04/2013 Despite a good week of training in preparation for this game the team never really got started. Within ten minutes our frustration at being harassed and not being able to settle into any rhythm began to show. Whilst we were clearly the better footballing team, passes fell short, we were second to the ball and we began to argue amongst ourselves. Early chances from Hussein and Rodrigo failed to find the net adding to the frustration. Rodrigo’s athletic half volley slammed into the underside of the bar and bounced on the wrong side of the line - according to the ref! Louie kept the boys in the game with a commanding performance in his area as well as pulling off a couple of excellent saves. Following an expletive laden half-time team talk there was a definite improvement in both attitude and performance. However despite camping in the opposition’s half we were denied goals by their keeper and what seemed like a ten man defence. Nathan’s arrival on the park late in the game changed the shape, adding more pressure, and it wasn’t long before he pounced on a loose ball to score, only to have it disallowed by the referee who claimed that the ball had been kicked out of the keeper’s hands! Ironically on days like this, when things are not going your way…they tend to get worse. With five minutes to go and the prospect of taking only one point back home from a game that we should be winning, a long ball out of defence found a lone midfielder who was allowed to run unchallenged and fire off what on any other day would have been easily scooped up by Louie. However, a recent shower of rain had made the surface slippery and the well struck shot skidded awkwardly finding the back of the net. First loss! Consistent performances from Jack Caunter, Louie Caunter and Drew-Jack being named, and deserving, player of the day.

10 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz UNDER 17 METRO Committed start to season for BUAFC under 17 Metro Being part of any football team can be challenging at the best of times. But a teenage dominated team driven by passionate personalities and the will to win can find itself facing more challenges than many. This couldn’t be more evident as results have shown in the first 3 games of the season. Game 1 vs Three Kings United, Sunday 07 April, Onepoto Domain: Our approach to the 1st game of the season was positive. A pre-season game against Western Springs u17’s, coached by ex-All White, Neil Emblem, resulted in an encouraging 4-0 win. But with our number 1 goal keeper out of action for the first 2 games due to an unfortunate incident with a long board, it was always going to be testing to get a positive result with our first game of the season. We dominated the game as our Passing Percentage exceeded 85%. It should’ve been a straight forward victory but we were unable to seal the deal and then lost a player to a red card offense after he clumsily reacted to a silly foul against him. Finishing was questionable and the boys wasted plenty of opportunities, repeatedly declining to play the ball wide from mid-field. As a result getting to the bi-line and crossing the ball into the danger area was non- existent. Conclusion: You’re never happy when you draw a game as you always want to win. But considering we played the last 23minutes with 10 men and still dominated, you must be proud of the effort the boys put in. Stand outs: Joel Curran, Gregory Vasilakis, Quinn Ashby & Tate Kimpton Result: 0-0 draw Coaching Team’s Emotion: Optimistic Outlook: Can improve

Game 2 vs Eastern Suburbs, Sunday 14 April, Madills Farm: Having dominated our 1st game of the season we were once again optimistic of a positive result. With the same format as the previous week the game progressed fairly with both teams missing chances. Our stand-in goal keeper (Harry Bolton-Roberts) was exceptional, again, saving a number of shots on goal and creating several opportunities with his long and accurate goal kicks. However, it was just not going to happen…we all have those days. We should’ve scored heaps. Misses by: a) Tate Kimpton – Wonderful header across face of goal mouth b) Dylan Higgins – Stunning pile drive just wide of upright after intercepting a cross in from Harry Bell c) Joel Curran – Powerful shot on edge of box hitting the cross bar www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 11 UNDER 17 METRO d) Thomson Nkoy– Clinical finish, scoring but late offside call e) Adyn Kettle– Well placed free kick, going in, but unfortunately Thomson headed ball across face of goal Those five misses came back to haunt us as with only 4 minutes left to play, 3 unanswered goals were scored. At half-time we swapped Harry Bolton-Roberts with another stand-in goal keeper volunteer, Jordon. Unfortunately this move was the start of our demise. As our opposition’s onslaught continued it was evident goalkeeping experience was required. Conclusion: A much improved performance with a number of chances not being seized. A good step in the right direction even though we lost. We know we have to keep building and therefore will get better. Stand outs: Dylan Higgins & Lewis Rutledge Result: 0-3 loss Coaching Team’s Emotion: Frustrated Outlook: Hopeful

Game 3 vs Papakura, Sunday 21 April, Onepoto Domain: Good luck wishes from the U17’s coach, Paul Hobson, while still in hospital, must’ve sparked the team’s determination to win. Even his pre-match prediction of a 6-1 victory was uncanny and it almost seemed as if he had a premonition…. maybe just a wealth of football knowledge and trust in his team could be the only explanation for his close guess. The return of our number 1 goal keeper gave us a new found sense of optimism and confidence. With four quick goals in the first 10 minutes we were set for a humdinger of a game. The first, scored by Adyn Kettle was a classic cross from the left side of the pitch one touch and bam, goal. Approximately 2 minutes later the second was another classic. A perfect through ball from the mid-field and Dylan Higgins lightning take-off speed surprised the defense, one-on-one with the keeper; clinical finish bottom right. The third was an individual effort by Joel Curran. From the left hand side of the pitch he dribbled pass a defender, cut back inside, beat another defender and with a powerful strike and pin-point accuracy, nailed a goal bottom left. And now it was Harrison Bolton-Roberts turn. He scored the 4th when he received the ball on the edge of the box. With the defenders screaming “no shot, no shot”, Harri calmly moved to the right and quickly back to the left and with his immaculate left foot; he slammed the ball through the defense beating the keeper – bottom left. Unfortunately, we conceded an own-goal when a corner was misjudged (sun in eyes) as the ball came off one of our own while in the box. A penalty by Keegan Farrelly in the second half sealed the deal to hand us our first win of the season. Conclusion: Excellent result. The game was physical and there were some forceful and passionate tackles. We went out and played football which shown in the result. My promise

18 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 19 JUNIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL 2013 10th Grade The 10th Grade Blue Birds have started the season well with a 4 win, 2 loss record so far. On the first weekend we lost 2-1 and 1-0 to Forrest Hill in what was a good learning experience for them. We scored first and then conceded two goals from errors in the first game and in the second game it was a well taken direct free kick that separated the two sides. The following weekend saw them beat North Shore 6-0 and 4-0 and last weekend they beat West Auckland 3-0 & 7-0 for a total of 21 goals for and only three against. Seven different goal scorers and some very solid defending has been very pleasing to watch. They have two more rounds of grading and plenty to work on at training but Dave and I are looking forward to seeing the girls improve over the rest of the season. Thanks Darryl and Dave. 9th Grade The Blue Belles have made a great start to the season, winning 4 from 6. Each game has seen improvement and the girls have shown tenacity coming from 2 nil down to win a game 5 - 3. They work hard and are starting to gel together as a team with some natural defenders and attackers starting to come forward. They are looking forward to a fun season. Thanks Anne. The Blue Buttons have yet to record a win this season but are making great strides in developing their game. This is the first season for most of the team and the girls are fast gaining an ability to challenge the opposition and put them under pressure. The lapses in concentration and unlucky bounces haven’t stopped them enjoying what is looking to be a fun season. Thanks Mike. The Bluebirds have won 3 and lost 3 this season. We have a good balanced side that is starting to gel as a team. The girls are full of heart and will continue to grow their skill base throughout the season. With only five girls making up the Bluebirds the girls have struggled away from home against teams with several reserves but never give up trying for themselves and the team. Well done Bluebirds. Thanks Nigel. Darryl Churchill – 9th and 10th grade Girls team Coordinator

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg… Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send mes- sages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighbouring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP). And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. Indeed he did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks. And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel , or eBay as it came to be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's cousin, Josh- ua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE). That is how it all began. And that's the truth....
