  • Coal Mining and Ground Surface Subsidence at Batu Arang, Negeri Selangor Darul Ehsan
355 Coal mining and ground surface subsidence at Batu Arang, Negeri Selangor Darul Ehsan J.K. RAJ Jabatan Geologi Universiti Malaya 50603 Kuala Lumpur Coal mining has been carried out at Batu Arang for some 45 years, from 1915 to 1960, with both surface and underground workings. The coal was mined from two main seams; the Upper Seam (some 15 m thick) and the Lower Seam (about 8 m thick). These seams, which are stratigraphically some 65 m apart, are interbedded with shales, clays, siltstones and sandstones of a Late Oligocene to Miocene age that have been termed the "Coal Measures". These gently dipping sedimentary rocks outcrop in the form of a plunging syncline and unconformably overlie meta-sedimentary rocks of mainly quartzites and phyllites of an Upper Palaeozoic age. The "Coal Measures" are unconformably overlain by a probable Pleistocene sequence of boulders, pebbles and subangular fragments of quartzite in a sandy to gravelly matrix that have been termed the "Boulder Beds". The strata of the "Coal Measures" are cut by a few normal faults and contain closely spaced joints that are mostly developed perpendicular to bedding. Mapping of past and present features of ground surface subsidence, including depressions and sinkholes (pits), and their effects on man-made structures, shows that their development is closely related to the underground coal workings. Depressions have developed as a result of the gradual down-warping (or convergence) of overburden into underground openings, whilst sinkholes have formed where the caved overburden material has been able to move laterally into adjacent openings. The most recently occurring depressions and sinkholes have developed over the shallower, earliest underground coal workings, as well as those made during the Second World War, and in a few cases, over some post-war workings.

Therefore, this study aims to assess the environmental condition and infestation level of Aedes vectors at selected residential areas in Puncak Alam, Selangor. The aims of this study are to understand the environmental profile of residential areas towards infestation level of dengue vectors. A pilot study was conducted in Puncak Alam in order to understand the infestation profile of dengue vectors in residential areas by assessing the environmental condition index (ECI) in front and yard area of residential area. In this study, a minimum of a hundred houses in each residential area was observed for the environmental condition of front and yard of the premises. Concurrently, a total of thirty ovitraps were placed randomly at outdoor premises in order to measure the infestation level of the Aedes mosquitoes. A total of 318 households were inspected in both front area (FA) and yard area (YA) where in general, the environmental condition in front of houses is better than the yard area.

PLANNING MALAYSIA: Journal of the Malaysian Institute of Planners VOLUME 18 ISSUE 3 (2020), Page 241 – 250 EVALUATION OF LEVEL OF SERVICE (LOS) ON ROUTES OF SMART BUS IN KAJANG, SELANGOR Nur Shazreena Mat Shukri1, Zakiah Ponrahono2, Yakin Nur Sunoto3, & Wan Noratikah Wahidah Wan Ghazali4 1,2,3,4 Department of Environment Faculty of Forestry and Environment UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA Abstract Level of service (LOS) is a method used for the development of transportation infrastructure designations based on a specific analysis. The concept of LOS lies on the importance of an assessment of roadway operational performance services for the improvement of bus service delivery. A high performance of bus service delivery could relatively influence the satisfaction level of its users. This study assesses the LOS of three main designated routes of SMART buses in Kajang Selangor (KJ01, KJ02, and KJ03). The SMART buses are free buses provided under a free transit programme which aims to encourage people to use public transportation. An on-board survey and inventory observation were employed to collect the data. Findings indicate that KJ01, KJ02, and KJ03 fall under the category of LOS D considering the attributes of service frequency, service hours, passenger load/thresholds, and speed of bus. The discovery may serve as a useful guidance for the development of a comprehensive plan for LOS to be coordinated in improving the service quality of bus transportation.
