FALL 2019 imagine

A LEGACY OF COMPASSION The Anderson family’s generosity—including a recent $50 million gift—touches the lives and futures of all our patients, including the five pictured here.

Every patient who visits Children’s Hospital benefits from philanthropists who support the hospital. WE CREATE HOPE AND BUILD HEALTHIER FUTURES.

Founded in 1901, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is the top-ranked pediatric hospital in and among the top five in the nation, according to the prestigious U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of children’s hospitals for 2019-20. The hospital is home to The Saban Research Institute and is one of the few freestanding pediatric hospitals where scientific inquiry is combined with clinical care devoted exclusively to children. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a premier teaching hospital and has been affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of USC since 1932.

CHLA.org/DONATE A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 children’s hospital in California, No. 1 in the Western U.S., and No. 5 in the nation.

The CHLA Board of Directors and senior management fully appreciate that our ability to continue serving the health care needs of the most vulnerable children in the region and achieve national rankings for clinical services, academic training programs and research endeavors results from the generosity of all CHLA supporters—donors such as the Anderson Stewart Family Foundation and others like them featured in this issue of Imagine.

When the late Marion and John E. Anderson were honored for their philanthropic efforts, they would often repeat four simple words: “Do the right thing.”

The couple’s mantra reverberates throughout the city and community they loved, especially for those who support the care delivered by CHLA’s experts. Faculty and staff remember Marion as a deeply engaged member and Chair of the Board of Trustees who connected with patients and had an unbridled passion for supporting the hospital’s family-centered care.

Today, Marion and John’s legacy of improving lives endures through the Anderson Stewart Family Foundation. There are no adequate words to thank the family for CONNECT being steadfast partners in creating healthy, hope-filled futures for the children WITH PAUL we serve—with no better example than their recent $50 million gift. At Porto’s, our customers are like family, and we have some relationships as old as 40 years. We’ve made wedding cakes for couples whose children are now adults, and baby-shower cakes for parents who are now grandparents. When you’re a family-owned and family-run business, it’s not about making money. It’s about relationships that last a lifetime.

The more I think about it, we’ve been connected to Children’s Hospital in one way or another for quite some time. It started at a grassroots level, with nurses stopping by or calling me about a party they were throwing for some patients, wondering if we could donate some treats. Or I’d talk to customers who had kids at the hospital. Even right now, we have 1,200 employees, and I can guarantee nearly all of them have either had a child treated at Children’s Hospital or know someone who has.

Porto’s is all about family and making memories, so it just makes sense to share a journey with CHLA. Children are everything in our family, and our customers are all about their kids. There are a lot of wonderful charities and causes out there, but I can’t imagine aligning ourselves with something other than Children’s Hospital.

Giving is natural for us because it all started with my parents. They are simple, humble people. Even when they “Porto’s supports Children’s Hospital were living in Cuba, under communist rule and without much, they always made sure to share whatever they had because ... we want to give back and with our grandparents, aunts, uncles—everyone. There are seven grandchildren, and we want them to be aware of their role in society. My brother, Raul, is always telling them that if they really want to make a difference in this world they need to work hard and stay focused so that they are in a position to give later on.

But there are many, many other ways to help, not just through money. I’ve brought my children to the hospital to volunteer with me. I want them to know it’s their social responsibility to make any kind of improvement, big or small. For us, it can be as simple as donating our treats for different events. We have to keep in mind that even though they are hospitalized and fighting some tough battles, at the end of the day they are ▲ Raul Sr., decorating the bakery’s still kids. festive holiday cakes in the mid-’90s
