An Evening Tribute to a Wonderful Lady!

Sunday evening, May 15th, was a special evening in the life of the parish. The church was filled to capacity with friends, family, well-wishers, and admirers of Barbara Burton to honor her and to celebrate her 28 years of service at St. Vincent’s. Barbara played a 30-minute recital, followed by Evensong sung by the Cathedral Choir. Dean Reed than interrupted the service and surprised Barbara by calling her to the front of the church for some special presentations honoring her career. As a surprise to Barbara, three of her friends then played an organ recital in tribute to her. The con- gregation then retired to the Parish Hall for a sumptuous reception pre- pared by the Cathedral Reception Committee. (All photos are the courtesy of William Jackson.)

We thank all the people of St. Vincent’s that have donated cook- ies, prayers, and financial support for our efforts. Here’s a small sample of the types of issues we encounter in the prison. One man at my discussion family had numerous negative events in his life. At a young age, he saw a man gunned down outside his church. As a youth, a female cousin that he cared about was abducted, assaulted, and murdered. After his incarceration, his mother and father died at fairly young ages, and his wife and teenage daughter were killed in an auto accident one Saturday morning on their way to visit him in prison. During the weekend, he recounted that his grandmother was in ill health and he was facing the loss of the only person left in his life that cared about him. He was angry at God for “taking” all of these good people from him. Why do bad things happen to “good” people? He experienced the love of Christ that does not go away on this weekend. Another young man that I was “host” for, looked for all the world to be a “gang-banger,” and probably was. He was con- stantly looking around, observing other people, and didn’t seem to be getting a lot out of the weekend. I had several conversations with him, but he always said he was having a good time but his remarks seemed shallow. He admitted that

The April Financials tell an interesting story. Boosted by Easter and , we saw a significant increase in Loose Checks and Plate Offerings. What goes hand-in-hand with this giving is the number of people who were able to worship at St. Vincent's during April. Our overall attendance during Holy Week was 2,390. That’s 2,390 times that the Word of God was shared with someone and God’s message of hope heard. To quote Father Foster, “Glory! Alleluia!” Although non-pledge giving was up for the month of April, we did see a slight decline of approximately 3% in pledge payments from what was pledged. We are watching closely to see if this self-corrects in May, but we do ask for your diligence during the summer. It’s during the summer months that we tend to see our biggest financial struggles—with all the travel, sometimes pledges are forgot- ten. We thank you in advance for the extra effort that sometimes has to go into staying current with your pledge during the summer. Because of your faithful support, St. Vincent’s is fulfilling its mission—to make Jesus Christ known in all that we do. Through the consistent support and sacrificial giving of the members of St. Vincent’s, the clergy and lay ministries are able to make a difference to those in need spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
