EGERTON III* INTRODUCTION The development of professional ethics, standards, practices, and safeguards for the physician in relation to society is as continuous a process as is the development of medicine itself. The Hippocratic Oath attests to the antiquity of the physician's concern for a responsible code of conduct, as the Hammurabi Code equally attests to the antiquity of society's demand that physicians bear the responsibility of reliable practice." The issues involved in medical ethics and standards will never be fully resolved as long as either medicine or society continue to change, and there is no prospect of either becoming static. Two contemporary illustrations will show the on-going nature of the problems of medical ethics. The first is a question currently receiving international attention and publicity: what safeguards are necessary before a person is declared dead enough for his organs to be transplanted into a living patient? The other illustration does not presently, as far as I know, arouse much concern among physicians: that medical students carry out some aspects of medical practice on charity wards without the patients being informed that these men are as yet still students. Both illustrations indicate, I think, that medical ethics and standards should be judged within their context. If and when a consensus is reached on the criteria of absolute death, the ethical dilemma will certainly be reduced, if not entirely resolved. If and when there is a favourable physician-patient ratio throughout the world and the economics of medical care cease to be a serious problem, then the relationship of medical students to charity patients may become subject to new consideration. -
Interiors and Interiority in Vermeer: Empiricism, Subjectivity, Modernism
ARTICLE Received 20 Feb 2017 | Accepted 11 May 2017 | Published 12 Jul 2017 DOI: 10.1057/palcomms.2017.68 OPEN Interiors and interiority in Vermeer: empiricism, subjectivity, modernism Benjamin Binstock1 ABSTRACT Johannes Vermeer may well be the foremost painter of interiors and interiority in the history of art, yet we have not necessarily understood his achievement in either domain, or their relation within his complex development. This essay explains how Vermeer based his interiors on rooms in his house and used his family members as models, combining empiricism and subjectivity. Vermeer was exceptionally self-conscious and sophisticated about his artistic task, which we are still laboring to understand and articulate. He eschewed anecdotal narratives and presented his models as models in “studio” settings, in paintings about paintings, or art about art, a form of modernism. In contrast to the prevailing con- ception in scholarship of Dutch Golden Age paintings as providing didactic or moralizing messages for their pre-modern audiences, we glimpse in Vermeer’s paintings an anticipation of our own modern understanding of art. Bittersweet: Sugar, Slavery, and Science in Dutch Suriname
BITTERSWEET: SUGAR, SLAVERY, AND SCIENCE IN DUTCH SURINAME Elizabeth Sutton Pictures of sugar production in the Dutch colony of Suriname are well suited to shed light on the role images played in the parallel rise of empirical science, industrial technology, and modern capitalism. The accumulation of goods paralleled a desire to accumulate knowledge and to catalogue, organize, and visualize the world. This included possessing knowledge in imagery, as well as human and natural resources. This essay argues that representations of sugar production in eighteenth-century paintings and prints emphasized the potential for production and the systematization of mechanized production by picturing mills and labor as capital. The efficiency considered neces- Psary for maximal profit necessitated close attention to the science of agriculture and the processing of raw materials, in addition to the exploitation of labor. The accumulation of goods paralleled a desire to accumulate knowledge and to catalogue, organize, and visualize the world. Scientific rationalism and positivism corresponded with mercantile imperatives to create an epistemology that privileged knowledge about the natural world in order to control its resources. Prints of sugar production from the seventeenth century provided a prototype of representation that emphasized botanical description and practical diagrams of necessary apparatuses. This focus on the means of production was continued and condensed into representations of productive capacity and mechanical efficiency in later eighteenth-century images. -

T The primary external influence in Eastern Europe remains the Soviet Union. One of the resualts of the Second World War was that Eastern Europe fell into the Soviet sphere of influence; and, al- though to a lesser extent, it continues there until this day. At first, under Stalin, Eastern Europe increasingly became something close to a part of the Soviet Union. One of the tasks of his suc- cessors was to begin an imperial readjustment, in which Eastern Europe was the lesser problem; China, we now know, was the major one. Paradoxically, it was largely not in spite of but because of the 1956 Polish October and Hungarian Revolution that by the late nineteen fifties Jrushchev seemed. to be doing quite well in Eastern Europe. (We did not know then what we do now: he was already doing badly with China,) Khrushchev's program of de-Stalinization probably strengthened the Communist regime, at least for the pres- ent, within the Soviet Union, and it to some extent helped the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe. ESTUDOS BOTÂNICOS NO BRASIL NASSOVIANO: O HERBÁRIO DE MARCGRAVE E SUAS CONTRIBUIÇÕES PARA A DIFUSÃO DO CONHECIMENTO Botanical studies in Nassovian Brazil: Marcgrave's herbarium and its contributions to the dissemination of knowledge Bárbara Martins Lopes1 Roniere dos Santos Fenner2 Maria do Rocio Fontoura Teixeira3 Resumo: O presente artigo pretende revisitar o contexto histórico dos estudos botânicos, no período holandês, no século XVII, em Pernambuco, feitos especialmente por George Marcgrave, e a importância do herbário de sua autoria. Como procedimentos metodológicos, utilizou-se a pesquisa descritiva e documental, com coleta de dados a partir da documentação do acervo da Biblioteca do Instituto Ricardo Brennand, da coleção da Revista do Instituto Arqueológico e Histórico de Pernambuco, da Revista do Museu Paulista, da Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da Capes, do Google Acadêmico e do acervo da Academia Pernambucana de Ciência Agronômica. Os resultados levaram a refletir acerca da prática científica do botânico George Marcgrave, cujos estudos continuam importantes, com destaque para o herbário por ele organizado, pioneiro por se tratar da primeira coleção de objetos naturais com finalidade científica, bem como sua relevância para o ensino de ciências na atualidade. Abstract: This article aims to revisit the historical context of botanical studies, in the Dutch period, in the 17th century, in Pernambuco, made especially by George Marcgrave, and the importance of herbarium. As methodological procedures, descriptive and documentary research was used, with data collection from the documentation of the Ricardo Brennand Institute Library, the collection of the Revista do Instituto Arqueológico e Histórico de Pernambuco, the Revista do Museu Paulista, the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations by Capes, Google Scholar and the collection of the Pernambuco Academy of Agricultural Science. -

While most people today have never heard anything about this city or its history, this small town was once one of the most important cities in the Low Countries. It was also hub for the production of watercolor paintings. During the religious turmoil in the second half of the 16th century a large portion of artists fled the city to find a better life in other European cities. One of these places was Delft, were a group of 24 Mechelen artists settled. In this paper we look at the lives of these artists to better understand the knowledge circulation between the north and the south at the turn of the 17th century.
