annual re2p0or1t 0 TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, is an autonomous international organization that promotes scientific capacity and excellence in the South. Founded in 1983 by a group of eminent scientists under the leadership of the late Nobel laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan, TWAS was officially launched in Trieste, Italy, in 1985, by the secretary-general of the United Nations. TWAS has nearly 1,000 members from over 90 countries. More than 80% of its members are from developing countries. A 13-member council directs the Academy activities. A secretariat, headed by an executive director, coordinates the programmes. The Academy’s secretariat is located on the premises of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. TWAS’s administration and finances are overseen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in accordance with an agreement signed by the two organizations. The Italian government provides a major portion of the Academy’s funding. The main objectives of TWAS are to: • Recognize, support and promote excellence in scientific research in the developing world; • Respond to the needs of young researchers in science and technology- lagging developing countries; • Promote South-South and South-North cooperation in science, technology and innovation; • Encourage scientific research and sharing of experiences in solving major problems facing developing countries. Newsletter Volume 6, Issue 11, November 2016 Mechanical Aspire Achievements in Sports, Projects, Industry, Research and Education All About Nobel Prize- Part 35 The Breakthrough Prize Inspired by Nobel Prize, there have been many other prizes similar to that, both in amount and in purpose. One such prize is the Breakthrough Prize. The Breakthrough Prize is backed by Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and Google co-founder Sergey Brin, among others. The Breakthrough Prize was founded by Brin and Anne Wojcicki, who runs genetic testing firm 23andMe, Chinese businessman Jack Ma, and Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner and his wife Julia. The Breakthrough Prizes honor important, primarily recent, achievements in the categories of Fundamental Physics, Life Sciences and Mathematics . The prizes were founded in 2012 by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Jack Ma and Cathy Zhang. Committees of previous laureates choose the winners from candidates nominated in a process that’s online and open to the public. Laureates receive $3 million each in prize money. They attend a televised award ceremony designed to celebrate their achievements and inspire the next generation of scientists. As part of the ceremony schedule, they also engage in a program of lectures and discussions. Those that go on to make fresh discoveries remain eligible for future Breakthrough Prizes. The Trophy The Breakthrough Prize trophy was created by Olafur Eliasson. “The whole idea for me started out with, ‘Where do these great ideas come from? What type of intuition started the trajectory that eventually becomes what we celebrate today?’” Like much of Eliasson's work, the sculpture explores the common ground between art and science. -

These data sets need to be either stored over the memory hierarchy of one computer or distributed and processed over many parallel computing devices or both. In fact, in many such applications, choosing a realistic computation model proves to be a critical factor in obtaining practically acceptable solutions. In this chapter, we focus on realistic computation models that capture the running time of algorithms involving large data sets on modern computers better than the traditional RAM (and its parallel counterpart PRAM) model. 5.1.1 Large Data Sets Large data sets arise naturally in many applications. As usual, 2003-2004 was an academically productive year in terms of scientific publications and scientific meetings. The Institute conducted the “Fifth SERC School on the Physics of Disordered Systems”; a two day meeting on “Operator Algebras” and the “third IMSc Update Meeting: Automata and Verification”. The Institute co-sponsored the conference on “Geometry Inspired by Physics”; the “Confer- ence in Analytic Number Theory”; the fifth “International Conference on General Relativity and Cosmology” held at Cochin and the discussion meeting on “Field-theoretic aspects of gravity-IV” held at Pelling, Sikkim. The Institute faculty participated in full strength in the AMS conference in Bangalore. The NBHM Nurture Programme, The Subhashis Nag Memorial Lecture and The Institute Seminar Week have become an annual feature.
