  • A Discussion Guide to Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WINNER of the CARNEGIE MEDAL A Discussion & Research Guide RUTA SEPETYS TO SALTTHE SEA Those who are gone are not necessarily lost. Author’s Note This book is a work of historical fi ction. The Wilhelm Gustloff, the Amber Room, and Operation Hannibal, however, are very real. The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff is the deadliest disaster in maritime history, with losses dwarfi ng the death tolls of the famous ships Titanic and Lusitania. Yet remarkably, most people have never heard of it. On January 30, 1945, four torpedoes waited in the belly of Soviet submarine S-13. Each torpedo was painted with a scrawled dedication: For the Motherland. For the Soviet People. For Lenin- grad. For Stalin. Three of the four torpedoes were launched, destroying the Wilhelm Gustloff and killing estimates of more than nine thousand people. The majority of the passengers on the Gustloff were civilians, with an estimated fi ve thousand being children. The ghost ship, as it is sometimes called, now lies off the coast of Poland, the large gothic letters of her name still visible underwater. Over two million people were successfully evacuated during Operation Hannibal, the largest sea evacuation in modern history. Hannibal quickly transported not only soldiers but also civilians to safety from the advancing Russian troops. Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, ethnic Germans, and residents of the East Prussian and Polish corridors all fl ed toward the sea. My father’s cousins were among them. My father, like Joana’s mother, waited in refugee camps hoping to return to Lithuania.

Salt to the SeaBy Leeanna ChetskoIrsquo;ve studied World War II for years. Irsquo;ve read countless books, both nonfiction and fiction, and watched a lot of documentaries. My undergrad degree is even in history. But somehow, before SALT TO THE SEA, Irsquo;d only heard about the Wilhelm Gustloff once. One mention of such an immense tragedy.Irsquo;m thankful to Ruta Sepetys for writing SALT TO THE SEA. I always enjoy historical fiction that introduces me to something I didnrsquo;t know before, which she certainly does. But more than that, the author has such a deft, confident hand that I could sense the amount of research she did and the respect she has for the survivors and victims of the Wilhelm Gustloff. Sepetys doesnrsquo;t overwhelm you with her knowledge, but inserts it subtly, weaving it into the backstories, thoughts, and actions of the characters.SALT TO THE SEA is told through the eyes of four characters.

  • Ruta Sepetys ILB 2016
The Future Eyes of the Past Ruta Sepetys • September 7, 2016 • ILB It’s an honor to be at the 16th annual International Literature Festival of Berlin. I’m particularly thrilled to be taking part in the program for children and young adults. In the United States, I am considered a “crossover” author—“crossover” because my novels are read by readers across many age groups, from students to elderly adults. I have written three historical novels. Much to my delight, my books are published in over 50 countries and 35 languages. That certainly would not be possible without my translators and foreign publishers. In many countries, my books are published only for adults, not teenagers. In Germany, however, it’s the opposite. I am published for young readers in Germany and I am so happy about that. I feel enormous gratitude to my German publisher Königskinder, and the brilliant German translator of my novels, Henning Ahrens. As a writer, I am drawn to underrepresented stories and history in hiding. I spend a lot of time pondering the question—why do some parts of history penetrate our collective consciousness while others remain hidden? That question inspired my first novel, Between Shades of Gray, which shares the story of Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians deported to Siberia by Joseph Stalin. My interest in history also inspired my most recent novel, Salt to the Sea, which tells the story of the evacuation of East Prussia and the sinking of the German ship, MV Wilhelm Gustloff. In addition to generating questions, writing historical novels and studying the past has taught me many things, but perhaps most importantly, it has taught me that progress is possible.

  • Dear Early Readers, When I Read the First Draft of the Fountains of Silence, I Devoured the Pages in Awe. of Course, I Knew to E
Dear early readers, When I read the first draft ofThe Fountains of Silence, I devoured the pages in awe. Of course, I knew to expect gorgeous prose, intricate plotting, compelling characters, and hidden history. For those things, Ruta has become well known. But I didn’t anticipate the read would be such a visceral experience. The Fountains of Silence takes us to Madrid, Spain, in 1957, during the height of General Francisco Franco’s regime. There, we follow four main characters as they attempt to shake off the shackles of their pasts and make their own futures. For Daniel, it means forsaking the family’s thriving oil business for photojournalism. For Ana, Rafa, and Puri, it means finding fulfilment in a country governed by fear and loss, and emerging from the long shadows cast by their parents. Before I read this novel, I knew very little about what Spain was like under Franco’s rule. I knew nothing of the secrets, of the scandal, of the oppression and lack of choice. It’s a true testament to Ruta’s strengths and abilities—as a researcher, a storyteller, a writer, and a human—that, just as Between Shades of Gray and Salt to the Sea have done, The Fountains of Silence will not only have you caring for characters, and for an entire country’s legacy that may be worlds away from your own, but will leave you better informed about our collective global history as well. Through history, Ruta taps into our intrinsic need for connection, and the power of empathy.

Living in Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States with her family. Half American and half Lithuanian. Proud over her Lithuanian background. Has worked in the music and entertainment industry for over twenty years. Interested in and passionate about the power of history and literature. Suspension builds both on the plot (how it will end up for the characters) and the historical context for the novels. Intention to foster global awareness and connectivity, through bringing up for many people common important historical figures, “hidden chapters in history”, conditions for survival and more. Experience of presenting to NATO, the European Parliament, the United States Capitol, and embassies worldwide. Common features of the novels Ruta Sepetys’ novels take place during poignant periods in history, such as Stalin’s gulag, Europe’s Eastern Front in World War II, New Orleans in the 1950s. All novels contain the theme of journey. The characters must overcome the challenges in their daily lives. They need to maneuver around the obstacles placed in their way, by events in the past, recent or distant. Main characters are driven by hope. It could be hope for a better life, to get out of a bad situation, or surviving for some more time. Characters need to overcome both events surrounding them and aspects of their own backgrounds, as can be overwhelming, oppressive, and unfair. Discussion questions Ruta’s novels are brining up the theme of living through significant events in history: 1.
