The objective of this research was to examine how stories can be used to teach mathematics at the secondary level. iii DEDICATION For my father and mother, Perumal and Gowry Balakrishnan.     This page intentionally left blank MONEY AND THE EARLY GREEK MIND How were the Greeks of the sixth century bc able to invent philosophy and tragedy? In this book Richard Seaford argues that a large part of the answer can be found in another momentous development, the invention and rapid spread of coinage, which produced the first ever thoroughly monetised society. By transforming social relations, monetisation contributed to the ideas of the universe as an impersonal system (presocratic philosophy) and of the individual alienated from his own kin and from the gods (in tragedy). Seaford argues that an important precondition for this monetisation was the Greek practice of animal sacrifice, as represented in Homeric epic, which describes a premonetary world on the point of producing money. This book combines social history, economic anthropology, numismatics and the close reading of literary, inscriptional, and philosophical texts. Questioning the origins and shaping force of Greek philosophy, this is a major book with wide appeal. richard seaford is Professor of Greek Literature at the University of Exeter. He is the author of commentaries on Euripides’ Cyclops (1984) and Bacchae (1996) and of Reciprocity and Ritual: Homer and Tragedy in the Developing City-State (1994).     Geometry: Neutral MATH 3120, Spring 2016 Many theorems of geometry are true regardless of which parallel postulate is used. A neutral geom- etry is one in which no parallel postulate exists, and the theorems of a netural geometry are true for Euclidean and (most) non-Euclidean geomteries. Spherical geometry is a special case of Non-Euclidean geometries where the great circles on the sphere are lines. This leads to spherical trigonometry where triangles have angle measure sums greater than 180◦. While this is a non-Euclidean geometry, spherical geometry develops along a separate path where the axioms and theorems of neutral geometry do not typically apply. The axioms and theorems of netural geometry apply to Euclidean and hyperbolic geometries. The theorems below can be proven using the SMSG axioms 1 through 15. In the SMSG axiom list, Axiom 16 is the Euclidean parallel postulate. A neutral geometry assumes only the first 15 axioms of the SMSG set. Notes on notation: The SMSG axioms refer to the length or measure of line segments and the measure of angles. Thus, we will use the notation AB to describe a line segment and AB to denote its length −−! −! or measure. We refer to the angle formed by AB and AC as \BAC (with vertex A) and denote its measure as m\BAC. 1 Lines and Angles Definitions: Congruence • Segments and Angles. Motivating Problems Today we are going to explore a kind of geometry similar to regular Euclidean Geometry, involving points and lines and triangles, etc. The main difference that we will see is that we are going to give mass to the points in our geometry. We will call such a geometry, See-Saw Geometry (we’ll understand why, shortly). Before going into the details of See-Saw Geometry, let’s look at some problems that might be solved using this different geometry.     FOUNDATIONS OF EUCLIDEAN CONSTRUCTIVE GEOMETRY MICHAEL BEESON Abstract. Euclidean geometry, as presented by Euclid, consists of straightedge-and- compass constructions and rigorous reasoning about the results of those constructions. A consideration of the relation of the Euclidean “constructions” to “constructive mathe- matics” leads to the development of a first-order theory ECG of “Euclidean Constructive Geometry”, which can serve as an axiomatization of Euclid rather close in spirit to the Elements of Euclid. Using Gentzen’s cut-elimination theorem, we show that when ECG proves an existential theorem, then the things proved to exist can be constructed by Eu- clidean ruler-and-compass constructions. In the second part of the paper we take up the formal relationships between three versions of Euclid’s parallel postulate: Euclid’s own formulation in his Postulate 5, Playfair’s 1795 version, which is the one usually used in modern axiomatizations, and the version used in ECG. We completely settle the questions about which versions imply which others using only constructive logic: ECG’s version im- plies Euclid 5, which implies Playfair, and none of the reverse implications are provable. The proofs use Kripke models based on carefully constructed rings of real-valued functions. “Points” in these models are real-valued functions.
