Emily and Kayla's Monthly Brain Benders Issue No. 26 March 2014 Facts about St. Patrick’s Day By: Carissa D St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland. The actual color associated with St. Patrick is blue. Green then became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. St. Patrick did not actually drive “snakes” out of Ireland: the snakes actually represented the pagans that he converted to Christianity. In Chicago, on St. Patrick's Day, the rivers are dyed green. Mayor Daley of Chicago is also of Irish descent. In Seattle, there is a ceremony where a green stripe is painted down the middle of the roads. The very first St. Patrick's Day parade was not in Ireland. It was in Boston, in 1737. St. Patrick’s birth name was actually Maewyn Succat -- it wasn't until he was a member of the Church that it was changed to Patricius, or Patrick. Book Reviews By: Rebekah H and Kelsey M The first book we read was Unlocking the Spell by E. D. Baker. In the book, Princess Annabell just came back from finding her older sister Gwendolyn’s, true love. Gwen is now getting annoyed that she has to go searching for Annie whenever she wants to gaze into her prince’s eyes, because he is cursed. That’s when another adventure begins for Annie. It is one which involves finding the evil dwarf who cursed Gwen’s true love. With the help of Liam, a new knight at the castle, they go out on another adventure. We would recommend this book because it is filled with adventures like the first book, The Wide Awake Princess, with just a twist of romance. The next book we read was Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George. The story was about a girl named Cecelia and the magic castle she lives in. Celia and her two brothers and sister live at Castle Glower, a castle that grows new rooms. When her wizard brother, Bran, is graduating from Wizard Academy, her parents, the king and queen, go to the ceremony. Celia, her brother Rolf, and her sister, Lilah, are left. That is when their parents and brother go missing and people from other kingdoms come pretending to care about the “death” of Celia’s family. That is when everyone in the kingdoms finds out suspicious things about the castle. Will Celia’s beloved castle’s secret be revealed to the people? Find out when you read Tuesdays at the Castle. Also, if you like it, check out the next book, Wednesdays in the Tower. We really liked this book because Celia would do anything for her castle. OneRepublic By: Priscilla N. and Cailin M. You can have a family member or friend game night. 5. If you like sports, you can go to a local sporting game. 6. Try to go to the movies with your friends. 7. The most important thing is to HAVE FUN!!! The iPod: 5th Generation By: Priscilla N. As you probably have heard, the iPod 5th generation is finally out! Many unique features have been added to this amazing light iPod. To start off, the iPod has an even better chip. The new chip is a Dual-core A5 chip. This chip provides up to twice the processing power, and up to 7 times faster graphics than the last generation. Also, because the A5 doesn’t use a lot of power you’ll have enough battery life to watch up to 8 hours of video and up to 40 hours of music. That’s a lot of battery life.

They sit, somewhat larger than life, caught in bronze, drinking tea. One lifts a glass, one peers forth earnestly, one stands and looks on and another points as one lifts high a scroll proclaiming "Women are persons!" They are older women, white, affluently dressed in a bronze rendition of the clothing of the twenties, sitting in oversized chairs and drinking from giants' teacups. Within their grouping, a circle is inscribed bearing their names. It is here we decided to do our impromptu Summer solstice ritual, our affinity group that has just grown to eleven with Rusty's safe arrival, joined by a few of our organizer friends, mostly from the legal collective. We gather late, after the meetings and trainings are over, spend time chatting among the statues who seem alive. I am tired, I admit to myself. Finally we make a circle, do a short grounding, cast a circle from within the statues who seem to be alive, observing us, raising a their cups in a silent toast. We call in the directions, the moon and the sun. I make an offering of Waters of the World to the spirits of the land, ask for permission to do our ritual there.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS Zephaniah 1:7, 12-18 e silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is at hand; the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated his guests. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish Bthe people who rest complacently on their dregs, those who say in their hearts, “The Lord will not do good, nor will he do harm.” Their wealth shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them. The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bit- ter, the warrior cries aloud there. That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will bring such distress upon people that they shall walk like the blind; because they have sinned against the Lord, their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.

About half an hour later but it was during cold and flu season so we didn’t pay they brought her out of the MRI and we were too afraid to too much attention to it. Then, she had a sinus infection even tell her. The doctor told her about the tumor, and they that was treated, but she still had headaches and was still ambulanced her to Denver. When I asked her, she said that she had double vision, so we took her into urgent care. They were trying to set up a neurology appointment, but being in North Platte, the neurologist couldn’t see anyone under 18 years old and it was almost closing time. At that point I knew that something was wrong and I said to my husband, “I really think we need to go to Children’s,” and he said, “Let’s take her to the E.R. first.” We went to the emergency room and the doctor there agreed to do the MRI that night. Abbey was only in there 10 minutes before the radiologist came out and walked right past us.

  • Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1
Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. KEY WORDS Latin poetry, pedagogy, popular music, music videos, song lyrics, Taylor Swift INTRODUCTION When I assign Roman poetry to my classes at a large research university, I re- ceive a decidedly unenthusiastic response. For many students, their experience with poetry of any sort, let alone ancient Latin verse, has been fraught with frustration, apprehension, and confusion.
