THE MISSION OF TRINITY CATHEDR AL IS TO PROCLAIM IN WORD AND ACTION GOD’S JUSTICE, LOVE AND MERCY FOR ALL CREATION. TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS Zephaniah 1:7, 12-18

e silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is at hand; the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated his guests. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish Bthe people who rest complacently on their dregs, those who in their hearts, “The Lord will not do good, nor will he do harm.” Their wealth shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them. The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bit- ter, the warrior cries aloud there. That day will be a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will bring such distress upon people that they shall walk like the blind; because they have sinned against the Lord, their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath; in the fire of his passion the whole earth shall be consumed; for a full, a terrible end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth. Psalm 90:1-8, 12

1 O God, you have been our refuge * from one generation to another. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, * from age to age you are God. 3 You turn us back to the dust and say, * “Go back, O child of earth.” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past * and like a watch in the night. 5 You sweep us away like a dream; * we fade away suddenly like the grass. 6 In the morning it is green and flourishes; * in the evening it is dried up and withered. 7 For we consume away in your displeasure; * we are afraid because of your wrathful indignation. 8 Our iniquities you have set before you and our secret sins in the light of your countenance. 12 So teach us to number our days * that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

ow concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief Nin the night. When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

2 Matthew 25:14-30

esus said, “It is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then Jhe went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, say- ing, ‘Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”

The Prayers of the People Intercessions for the Christian People The day of the Lord is soon upon us, a day not of wrath but of salvation. As children of the light and of the day, let us await the coming of the Lord in prayer on behalf of the human family around the world, saying: God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Let us pray for those who use their lips and lives to proclaim the good news of Christ’s return, that they may persist in their zeal, empowered and emboldened through the gifts of your Spirit: God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Let us pray for those who, with joy and longing, await the return of the Messiah, that they may not grow weary in well-doing, but witness to the immediate and everlasting promise of our holy Redeemer: God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

The Homily The Very Rev. Tracey Lind

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

4 On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People (Pg. 3)

The Confession Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Call to Worship Fix You When you try your best, but you don’t succeed. When you get what you want, but not what you need. When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep, Stuck in reverse... And the tears come streaming down your face.. When you lose something you can’t replace. When you love someone, but it goes to waste. Could it be worse? Lights will guide you home, and ignite your bones, and I will try to fix you.

And high up above or down below. When you’re too in love to let it go. But if you never try you’ll never know, just what you’re worth. Lights will guide you home, and ignite your bones, and I will try to fix you. Tears stream down your face when you lose something you cannot replace. Tears stream down your face and I.... Tears stream down your face, I promise you I will learn from my mistakes. Tears stream down your face and I…. Lights will guide you home, and ignite your bones, and I will try to fix you

The Opening Song Every Teardrop is a Waterfall Coldplay

I turn the music up, I got my records on. I shut the world outside until the lights come on. Maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone I feel my heart start beating to my favorite song And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night, until Monday morning feels another life I turn the music up, I’m on a roll this time, and heaven is in sight!

I turn the music up, I got my records on, from underneath the rubble sing a rebel song. Don’t want to see another generation drop, I’d rather be a comma than a full stop. Maybe I’m in the black, maybe I’m on my knees. Maybe I’m in the gap between the two trapezes, But my heart is beating and my pulses start. Cathedrals in my heart!

As we saw oh this light I swear you, emerge blinking into to tell me it’s alright As we soar walls, every siren is a symphony. And every tear’s a waterfall, is a waterfall Oh, Is a waterfall, oh, oh, oh, Is a, is a waterfall! Every tear Is a waterfall! Oh... So you can hurt, hurt me bad but still I’ll raise the flag! Oh, it was a wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall! Every tear; Every tear; Every teardrop is a waterfall

The Gradual Song Ordinary Human OneRepublic Today I took a walk in the clouds. Today I took a walk in the clouds. Used to keep my eyes wide shut, but now I’m staring down. Today I felt a switch in my vein. Today I felt a switch in my vein Used to be a shadow now, a shadow scream my name. And in the daylight I could swear we’re the same.

But I’m just an ordinary human (Ordinary ways). I’m just an ordinary human, But I don’t feel so ordinary today. I’m just a picture perfect nothing, sometimes I medicate. I’ll be a picture perfect human, before the sun goes down today.

Today I felt a switch in my vein. Today I made them all afraid: I used to be a shadow, now a shadow screams my name. And in the daylight I could swear, we’re the same But I’m just an ordinary human (Ordinary ways) I’m just an ordinary human. But I don’t feel so ordinary today. I’m just a picture perfect nothing, sometimes I medicate. I’ll be a picture perfect human, before the sun goes down today. Just an ordinary human, but I don’t feel so typical today.

There’ll be peace in the city tonight. Peace in the city tonight. But when I’m gone I hope they get it right. 2X’S I’m just an ordinary human (Ordinary ways). I’m ordinary human. I don’t feel so ordinary today But when I’m gone, I hope they get it right.

8 An Affirmation of Faith Daily Prayer for All Seasons We believe in God, Creator of all: The two-legged, the four-legged, the winged ones, and those that crawl upon the earth and swim in the waters. We believe in God, One Who Walked with Us: Our brother Jesus born in humility, who lived and died for us and who will come again to bring us to glory. We believe in God, Spirit with Us: Ever present and ever guiding, upholding us and showing us the principles to live by. We hear God’s voice through the prophets. Creator, One Who Walked with Us, Spirit with Us, Holy One: We are named in the waters of baptism as your own, all of us related, all of us your children. We watch for signs of your homecoming and thank you for his sacred circle of life. Amen.

The Peace

Presider The peace of Christ be always with you. People And also with you.

9 The Holy Communion All are welcome at God’s table in this Cathedral. It is the tradition of the church that when one receives one species alone - either bread or wine - one still partakes of the body of Christ and the cup of salvation. If you are gluten-sensitive, we have gluten-free wafers. Please let the priest know when you come forward. If you do not wish to receive the wine, you may cross your hands over your chest, hold your hand over the chalice, or simply return to your seat after receiving the bread.

The Offertory Song OneRepublic Hope when you take that jump, you don’t fear the fall. Hope when the water rises, you built a wall. Hope when the crowd screams out, they’re screaming your name. Hope if everybody runs, you choose to stay. Hope that you fall in love, and it hurts so bad. The only way you can know, is give it all you have. And I hope that you don’t suffer but take the pain. Hope when the moment comes, you’ll say. I, I did it all! I, I did it all! I owned every second that this world could give, I saw so many places, the things that I did! With every broken bone, I swear I lived

Hope that you spend your days, but they all add up. And when that sun goes down, hope you raise your cup! Oh, I wish that I could witness all your joy and all your pain; But until my moment comes, I’ll say…

I, I did it all! I, I did it all! I owned every second that this world could give I saw so many places, the things that I did. With every broken bone, I swear I lived. Oh, oh, oh, oh… With every broken bone, I swear I lived. With every broken bone, I swear I… I, I did it all! I did it all! I owned every second that this world could give, I saw so many places, the things that I did. With every broken bone, I swear I lived! Oh, oh, oh, oh…

The Breaking of the Bread Presider We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. People We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

All are invited to come forward for Communion or a blessing.

The Communion Song Everglow Coldplay Oh they say people come, say people go, this particular diamond was extra special. And though you might be gone, and the world may not know, still I see you, celestial.

Like a lion you ran, a goddess you rolled, like an eagle you circled, in perfect purple. So how come things move on, how come cars don’t slow. When it feels like the end of my world. When I should, but I can’t let you go? But when I’m cold, cold, oh when I’m cold, cold, there’s a light that you give me when I’m in shadow, there’s a feeling you give me, an everglow.

Like brothers in blood, sisters who ride, and we swore on that night we’d be friends til we die, but the changing of winds, and the way waters flow, life as short as the falling of snow, and now I’m gonna miss you, I know... But when I’m cold, cold, in water rolled, salt.. I know that you’re with me and the way you will show, and you’re with me wherever I go, and you give me this feeling, this everglow, oh.... What I wouldn’t give for just a moment to hold, yeah I live for this feeling this everglow So if you love someone, you should let them know; oh the light that you left me will everglow.

12 The Thanksgiving The Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below. Praise God, ye hosts in heav’n above. Praise God, the Trinity of Love.

The Blessing

The Closing Song Feel Again OneRepublic It’s been a long time coming since I’ve seen your face. I’ve been everywhere and back trying to replace. Everything that I’ve had till my feet went numb. Praying like a fool that’s been on the run. Heart still beating but it’s not working. It’s like a million dollar phone that you just can’t ring. I reach out trying to love but I feel nothing. Yeah, my heart is numb… But with you, I feel again! Yeah with you, I can feel again, yeah! I’m feeling better since you know me, I was a lonely soul but that’s the old me.

It’s been a long time coming since I’ve seen your face. I’ve been everywhere and back trying to replace. Everything that I broke till my feet went numb. Praying like a fool who just shot a gun. Heart still beating but it’s not working. It’s like a hundred thousand voices that just can’t sing I reached out trying to love but I feel nothing; Oh my heart is numb….

But with you, I feel again! And with you, I can feel again But with you (I’m feeling better since you know me) I feel again (I was a lonely soul but that’s the old me) Yeah with you (I’m feeling better since you know me) I can feel again (I was a lonely soul) Woo hoo (Woo hoo)!

17 Music at the Offertory People, Look East arr. Malcolm Archer

People, look East. The time is near of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, Trim the hearth and set the table. People, look East, and sing today: Love the Guest is on the way.

Furrows be glad. Though earth is bare, one more seed is planted there: Give up your strength the seed to nourish, that in course the flower may flourish. People, look East, and sing today: Love the Rose is on the way.

Stars keep the watch. When night is dim one more light the bowl shall brim. Shining beyond the frosty weather, Bright as sun and moon together. People, look East, and sing today: Love the Star is on the way.

Angels, announce to man and beast Him who cometh from the East. Set every peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming. People, look East, and sing today: Love the Lord is on the way.

The Great Thanksgiving BCP Prayer A Presider God be with you. People And also with you.

Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord.

Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Presider It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us and make us heirs of eternal life; that when he comes again we may, without shame or fear, rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

18 Presider Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Creator of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in Love to the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever.

19 Presider As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Presider We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. People We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

All are invited to come forward for Communion or a blessing.

Music at the Communion My Lord, What a Morning Spiritual, arr. R. Lee Gilliam

My Lord, what a morning, when the stars begin to fall. You’ll hear the trumpet sound, to wake the nations underground, Looking to my God’s right hand, when the stars begin to fall. You’ll hear the sinners mourn, to wake the nations underground, Looking to my God’s right hand, when the stars begin to fall. My Lord, what a morning, when the stars begin to fall.

The Sending of Eucharistic Visitors Presider: In the name of God and on behalf of our congregation, we send you forth bearing these holy gifts. May those to whom you go and visit share with us in the communion of Christ’s Body and Blood.

People: May you carry the prayers of all of us as you take this sacrament of Holy Communion from the altar of Trinity Cathedral. Amen.

The Postcommunion Prayer We the whole creation, in all our frailty and mystery, with all our races and peoples, join hands in your temple, in doubt, in love, in risk, in hope -- and offer you thanks in a new way, not being lifted out of what is human, but by daring to be what we truly are -- the work of your loving hands, God-touched and frail, yet possessing a dignity beautiful beyond belief. Amen.
