Christmas 2012

It's Panto Time!! PCSA proudly

presents Dick Whittington

The Academy’s Faculty of Creative Arts & Design Technology is proud to be presenting its sixth full scale Christmas Pantomime: this year it is ‘Dick Whittington’ and we feel sure it will be as brilliant as the last five!

This highly ambitious venture involves a cast of 50 actors, singers and dancers ranging from Year 7 to Year 13. The production is fully costumed and has all the advantages of being in a Theatre with lighting and sound.

Tickets can be purchased through the Palace Avenue Theatre Box Office Tel: 01803 665800 or by completing the reply slip already sent to you by the Head of Faculty. Mrs Sian Dale.

Performance dates are Wednesday, 12th and Thursday, 13th December at 7.30pm and ticket Prices are as follows: Adults £8.50, Children/Senior Citizens £6.00, Family Ticket £24.00 (2 adults and up to 3 children).

Children in Need

The Academy took part in various activities to support Children in Need on Friday, 16th November.

PCSA will be donating over £700 to Children in Need as a result of donations for wearing non-uniform clothes, bake sales, gladiators, lunchtime roller disco, a penalty shoot out and much, much more! Some brave girls from Borough Road also took a sponsored dip into the freezing cold sea on Paignton Beach.

The photograph shows members of our staff really getting into the spirit of the day.

Our thanks go to all the students and staff who took part in this fundraising event.

The questions were searching but well received and gave a real insight into living and working in Kampala and the work of the Malaika Home. The judges were myself, a Governor, Mrs Tucker, and our Academy Librarian, Mrs Hunt.

Enterprise Challenge at South College

On the 14th November five students from Paignton Community and Sports Academy (Liam Morgan, Kelsea Swift, Jade Hart, Harry Harding, Jodi-lee Weaver) were invited to attend the Enterprise Challenge at .

The challenge involved creating an advertising campaign for a local business: we partnered up with Chief Rentals.

The main focus of the challenge was to create a radio jingle, and the winning team would have their jingle professional produced and it would be heard on Palm Radio. The five students came up with a Christmas theme for their jingle which was set to the tune of The 12 Days of Christmas. After creating a script they had a chance to record it in the radio studio. Harry and Liam took the lead in the singing part of the jingle and the girls read out the second part of the jingle.

After lunch the group of students had to deliver a presentation to representatives from Palm FM and Radio Jingles. They delivered an excellent presentation and had good feedback: the judges particularly liked the Christmas theme.

Although the Academy did not win the Challenge this time the students had a great day and really enjoyed creating the radio jingle.

You can listen to the jingle on our Academy website.

YEAR 7 FRESHER’S CAMP

Over 140 students attended Year 7 Camp in October 2012 at Broadleas Camp, Haytor on Dartmoor. This gives Year 7 pupils the chance to experience a residential camp allowing them to mix with their new classmates and teachers in a safe and friendly environment.

There were three camps of 2½ days each offering the students a range of outdoor activities from letterboxing, mountain biking, team building, archery and back-woods cooking!

The Year 7 pupils had the pleasure of being joined by 6th Form helpers who were attached to a team for the camp. The 6th formers provided a good platform for the Year 7s to speak to about any problems they had, whilst also giving the older students a chance to shine at leadership and management skills. This year the 6th formers were a real credit to the Academy, offering support to the Year 7 students.

Without exception, this was the wettest year in the recent history of Year 7 camp (as can be seen from the photograph above!). After a great deal of rain over the weeks preceding the camp, the ground was already saturated. As camp began, we were treated to 2 weeks of pretty much continuous rain making the activities and camping even more challenging than usual.

During the evening, members of staff from the Art Department came up to provide activities for the students, offering cross curricular activities in a practical setting.

Other evening activities included traditional storytelling from a theatre company in Exeter. The camp was linked throughout to Dartmoor giving the students the chance to appreciate the National Park they have on their doorstep.

The camp is a great opportunity for our students to demonstrate a desire to develop their outdoor experiences throughout their future school careers.

A huge thank you must go to all staff that came up to help on the camp. We had the added benefit of volunteer Ross Bomby helping us with camp, who is preparing for Officer entry into the Royal Marines.

Anti-Bullying Week

During Anti - Bullying week all pupils at Key Stage 3 had the opportunity to enter a T-shirt competition to promote anti bullying.

These T - Shirts will be displayed around the Academy for all to see that we are supporting this fantastic cause to stamp out bullying.

Well done to all of our winners!

Sandra Mitchell and the Year 11 GCSE History students are celebrating winning an award for a Masters-level research project undertaken with The University College of St Mark and St John, Plymouth.

The project took place over two years and centred on developing personalised learning strategies in the history classroom. The students participated in a variety of ways including filming interviews about their progress, complet- ing questionnaires and evaluating new approaches to learning.

Students participating in the project identified ways to improve their own performance and several exceeded their target levels in the American West examination in June 2012.

Sandra was awarded a MEd in Professional Development (Distinction) and received an Outstanding Research and Practice-Based Impact Award from the university.

The group of Year 7 pupils were keen to find out how “lessons” worked, and were amazed at the facilities and equipment the students had access to.

Register now to make sure we don’t all miss out!!

The Government is giving money to schools to help children from lower income families do their very best. This funding is called a ‘Pupil Premium’. For every student registered the College gets £600 this year.
