In this book, I read ʿAṭṭār's works, European literature, and modern theory alongside each other; that is, I undertake a contrapuntal reading of works that are modern and medieval, literature and theory, and Middle Eastern and European. In that ix x Acknowledgments sense, this book is based on an interdisciplinary approach to literature, and benefits from a comparative cross-cultural, cross-historical, and cross-disciplinary perspec- tive. Throughout, I illustrate the interdependence of literature and theory from differ- ent times and places in regard to our understanding of the concepts of transgression and the limit, and how crossing boundaries can lead to the construction of subjectivity. Earlier parts of this book have been published. Excerpts from the book titled, "Against the Current: Farīd al-Dīn ʿAṭṭār's Diverse Voices," have been published in Persian Literary Studies Journal and awarded The Jafar and Shokoh Farzaneh Paper Prize in Persian Literature and Culture. The same article, under the title, "Hamzisti dar Asar-e ʿAṭṭār" (Co-existence in 'Attar's Works), has also been translated into Persian in Rahavard Persian/English Journal of Iranian Studies. Excerpts from chapter 3 have also been published in Persian Literary Studies Journal under the title, "Sexual Trauma and Spiritual Experience: Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya and Margery Kempe." Excerpts from chapter 5 in the form of an article titled, "Subjectivity in ʿAṭṭār's Shaykh Ṣanʿān Story in The Conference of the Birds," have been published online on CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture. Note on Transliteration, Dates, and Translation The International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES) pronunciation-based Persian and Arabic transliteration system has been used. The following is a guide to the IJMES transliteration system. For Persian proper names and words which have been adopted in European languages, I have used the most commonly used transcription rather than the IJMES transliteration. Most Arabic and Persian names from the classical period have been transliterated, but contemporary ones have not. All citations are indicated in the text by the edited work followed by the translation into English. All translations, sum- maries, and paraphrases of the Persian secondary sources and ʿAṭṭār's Muṣībat-nāma are the author's. Dates are based on the Gregorian calendar. Book and article titles have been transliterated for consistency, but original titles are used in the bibliography.

Taylor Spring 2018 Abstract “Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” by Jaison Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair The Mustafawiyya Tariqa is a regional spiritual network that exists for the purpose of assisting Muslim practitioners in heightening their level of devotion and knowledges through Sufism. Though it was founded in 1966 in Senegal, it has since expanded to other locations in West and North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1994, protegé of the Tariqa’s founder and its most charismatic figure, Shaykh Arona Rashid Faye al-Faqir, relocated from West Africa to the United States to found a satellite community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. This location, named Masjidul Muhajjirun wal Ansar, serves as a refuge for traveling learners and place of worship in which a community of mostly African-descended Muslims engage in a tradition of remembrance through which techniques of spiritual care and healing are activated. This dissertation analyzes the physical and spiritual trajectories of African-descended Muslims through an ethnographic study of their healing practices, migrations, and exchanges in South Carolina and in Senegal. By attending to manner in which the Mustafawiyya engage in various kinds of embodied religious devotions, forms of indebtedness, and networks within which diasporic solidarities emerge, this project explores the dispensations and transmissions of knowledge to Sufi practitioners across the Atlantic that play a part in shared notions of Black Muslimness.

[email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract. There are various factors that make human beings feel happy, one of them is possessing a good psychological well-being that they had. The purpose of this study was to identify an element of happiness that fulfil human’s necessity in their life, then develop the happiness measurement to an appropriate instrument. This research was conducted in different states in Malaysia using a survey method with quantitative approach. The number of samples of about 475 Malaysian from various stages of age using the purposive sampling technique. Data of happiness instrument was obtained through Al-Ghazali’s concept of happiness which includes religious knowledge, righteous practices and individual aspect and they act as the independent variables. Meanwhile, happiness itself acts as the dependent variable. The findings were then analysed using SPSS and PLS. Based on the structural equation modelling, the study found that religious knowledge, practices, and individual constructs have significant relationship with happiness. The average variance extracted (AVE) values ranges between 0.501 0.615, which is an acceptable valid range. It can be observed that there is a significant relation between individual construct and happiness (t=2.817, p<0.005), practices and happiness (t=6.805, p<0.000), and religious knowledge and happiness (t=3.947, p<0.000).

Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Hasan bin Bashir Bin Harun Al Hakim Al-Tirmidhi, also called Al- Hakim Al-Tirmidhi, is a Persian mystic living in the 3rd century AH. He is important in the history of Persian literature and the Persian-Islamic mysticism due to several reasons. First, he is one of the first Persian mystics who has significant works in the field of mysticism. Second, early instances of Persian prose can be identified in his world and taking the time that he was living into consideration, the origins of post-Islam Persian prose can be seen in his writings. Third, his ideas have had significant impacts on Mysticism, Sufism, and consequently, in the Persian mystical literature; thus, understanding and analyzing his viewpoints and works is of significant importance for attaining a better picture of Persian mystical literature. The current study attempts to analyze Al-Tirmidhi’s mystical ideology based on his two books: Bad’u Shanni Abu Abdullah (The Beginning of Abu Abdullah’s Journey) and Sirat Al-Awliya (Road of the Saints). Al-Tirmidhi’s ideology is going to be explained through investigating and analyzing his viewpoints regarding the manner of starting a spiritual journey, the status of asceticism and austerity in a spiritual journey, transition from the ascetic school of Baghdad to the Romantic school of Khorasan.

September 1999 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to investigate the significance of Divine Love in the Islamic tradition with reference to Sufis who used the medium of Arabic to communicate their ideas. Divine Love means the mutual love between God and man. It is commonly accepted that the Sufis were the forerunners in writing about Divine Love. However, there is a relative paucity of literature regarding the details of their conceptions of Love. Therefore, this attempt can be considered as one of the first of its kind in this field. The first chapter will attempt to define the nature of love from various perspectives, such as, psychology, Islamic philosophy and theology. The roots of Divine Love in relation to human love will be explored in the context of the ideas that were prevalent amongst the Sufi authors regarded as authorities; for example, al-Qushayri, al-Hujwiri and al-Kalabadhi. The second chapter investigates the origins Of Sufism with a view to establishing the role that Divine Love played in this. The etymological derivations of the term Sufi will be referred to as well as some early Sufi writings. It is an undeniable fact that the Qur'an and tladith are the bedrocks of the Islamic religion, and all Muslims seek to justify their ideas with reference to them.

    BEWILDERED BY LOVE AND LONGING Michael Sells and Simone Fattal talk about a new translation of Ibn ‘Arabi’s famous cycle of love poems, ‘Translation of Desires’ ‘Translation of Desires’ (Tarjumān al-ashwāq) is one of the world’s great works of mystical poetry. A cycle of 61 poems addressed to a beautiful but elusive beloved, it has been one the most widely-read works of the Andalusian mystic/philosopher, Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi (1165–1240). Even today, 800 years after its composition, its extraordinary imagery and sentiments continue to inspire artists and musicians not only within the Arab world, but also in the West, where it has become known largely through the early 20th century translation of R.A. Nicholson. This year has seen the publication of new translations of 46 poems, under the title ‘Bewildered’, by Michael Sells, The John Henry Barrows Professor of Islamic History and Literature at the University of Chicago, who has spent a lifetime on their study. Jane Clark and Cecilia Twinch talk to him, and to artist and publisher Simone Fattal who has produced the book for The Post Apollo Press. 1 Cecilia: Michael, these English versions of poems from Translation of Desires have been a work in progress for you for many years now, since the 1980s. It’s not. It’s going to be—it will be a land of tribulation, and warfare, and bloodshed until the Day of Judgment. Because only when the Christians and Jews are eradicated from the face of the earth, will the blessings of Allah come and there will be no more war on the earth. Ali al-Timimi, a Virginia-based American speaker and activist, set forth the above scenario in a 1996 speech delivered in English at an Islamic center in London. Timimi’s speech, like his other teachings, is available only in audio form through Internet web sites. His life story, the history and location of his study of Islam, and the major themes of his 1996 speech, entitled “The Islamic World: Where Is It Heading,” open a window onto key factors in the emergence of one form of contemporary militancy within Sunni Islam. Those factors include a major teaching institution within Saudi Arabia, a group of powerful Saudi religious scholars, the interaction of Christian and Islamic visions of apocalyptic warfare, and a particular method of interpreting and translating the Qur’an to fit contemporary geopolitics within a vision of divinely-ordained and irremediable conflict. They also include Timimi’s personal journey from immersion in a liberal and pluralistic American environment to his adoption of an identity that viewed war among Christians, Jews, and Muslims as the duty of all true Muslims.

    SUFISM: ISLAMIC MYSTICISM AND SPIRITUALITY Department of Religious Studies, FIU Professor: Dr. Carlos Grenier ([email protected]) Office hours: Before class or by appointment Overview: At the heart of the religion of Islam is its mystical tradition, Sufism. Practitioners of Sufism often departed from Islamic law and traditional orthodoxy and follow edwidely varying paths towards a mystical union with the divine. Usually organized into distinct groupings and schools of thought, Sufis strove for spiritual progress through an array of meditative practices, mystical recitations, music, and dance. They often expressed these truths in poetry and other arts, and so profoundly influenced Islamic culture as a whole. Ultimately the spread of Islam into Asia and sub-Saharan Africa was almost exclusively through the syncretic and esoteric teachings of these mystics who formed bridges between indigenous philosophies and the Islamic tradition by a focus on love of the Divine, the Prophet, and his family over fear of Divine judgment. Today Sufi mysticism remains a vitally important aspect of contemporary Islam – one that is not always visible on the global stage. Aims: This course aims to use primary and secondary texts to give students a thorough grasp of the Sufi mystical perspective, its terminology, and the social histories of its practitioners. By the completion of this course, students shall be able to (1) Recognize the major ethical and philosophical precepts that unite Sufism across its many manifestations, (2) Become aware of key variations within the varied panorama of Sufi thought and practice, and (3) Be able to place Sufism within a historical and cross-cultural perspective.

When human science, knowledge and research had not yet begun, and the first man had to calm his troubled mind for his own reasons. The only way he could escape the horror of death was to turn to a supernatural and mythical power. Many words have been said about the meaning and roots of myths. Arab lexicographers consider the term myth in Persian (Ostoreh) as an Arabic word on the weight of "Ofoleh" meaning objects connoting unfounded and wonderful myths and words that have been written (Kazazi , 1993: 1). Myth is a narrative that revives the original reality and satisfies the deep religious need and is a basic element of human civilization; moreover, mythology and storytelling are not in vain in any way (Masoumi, 2009: 19). It is an art, creative and poetic that over time, with the creative power of their imagination, have turned every aspect of human life into a poetic symbol; The aspirations of human beings throughout history have found poetic interpretations during these myths and have been narrated from generation to generation, and over time, have crystallized in the aura of poetic imagination of different generations. In between, myth and epic have a close and fundamental connection with each other. The epic is the product of a myth, and the myth is left to the nurturing mother who breeds the epic and nurtures it on her lap.
