he Pelican Brief s? Does this entail Julia Roberts parading around in avine under- The Pelican Brief garments, tassels and feathers? Sorry, chaps, but it's her attempt to revivify integrity Showcase Cinema T with a serious film. It also signifies a change in character of film. Political espionage and judicial intrigue provide welcome relief from the staple Roberts diet of personal, sentimental films which are sickeningly mawkish but, to be fair, occasionally thoroughly effective. (I too cried during Steel Magnolias). Briefly (ho-hot, the plot consists of a hunt for the killers of two Supreme Court justices. The usual para-military groups fall under suspicion but the case is also followed with enthusiasm by a young law student (our Julia). Questioning the apparent motivelessness of the killings, she descrys a link between the justices, hitherto undiscovered or ignored as irrelevant. Her brief suggests that the environmental sympathies of the justices are to blame for their deaths, since they have suppressed the attempts of a baddy billionaire to sink oil wells on a pelican reserve by throwing his appeal out of court. This in turn indicts the White House because their collusions with said billionaire (due to "legal" funding during the last presidential campaign) will allow other puppet justices to be put in place. Unfortunately through amicable exchange the brief eventually gets to the White House and is immediately covered up. It is the role of Roberts and Denzel Washington (investigative journalist, too dour and clinical in this film) to both avoid death -the assassins are now after Roberts for knowing too much- and to discover enough information to support her theory. Thus the plot bodes well but what could have been an extremely terse and exciting film is rendered torpid after a while by irrelevant twists which seem to serve no other purpose than to protract its length. On the other hand meaningful character-revealing digressions are not exactly to the fore and the supreme acting ability of Denzel Washington is strangled by the rational, career-orientated nature of the character he has to play. This he enlivens as much as he can. Roberts has more scope: what must be the pressures on someone who is on the run when there is no possibility of relaxation or dropping one's guard? Her attempt to show this involves acting-by-numbers using a soon repetitive idea; quivering and putting her hand over her mouth. Pretty powerful stuff, at least she can't talk then. So does this film kickstart Roberts' career again after a long absence? More like flogging a dead pelican. Jim Biswell

here's no keeping a Funkdoobiest down during this family extravaganza. Each band is endearingly attached Tto their touring buddies and each band shares a frighteningly similar vocal talent. It is indeed an inspired partnership. The venue sold out weeks ago to largely white, long haired, bearded and extensively pierced young men. But you can't knock them, they can certainly bounce, but the hyped up chanting of "Cock the trigger" could disenchant a girl. Presumably they are here because they are united in a studied yet relaxed approach towards hits from the bong; but to be goading the powers about gun control must be a drunken over sight, forgive them they know not what they say. What strength is there in a crowd dissing 'the pigs' when the sole authority figure in their life is a hall warden? But to Cypress Hill with lights in their eyes the demographics of the audience are righteously trivial, they just came to get down. Merely dipping into the hugely acclaimed "Black Sunday" LP for material we are gorged instead from the soon to come album with a roots, almost ragga feel coming across. But no amount of new directions could stop Cypress Hill being a band with one hobby. They are a one gag act which can tend to cause their mid set banter to ramble somewhat.
