I see this as a validation of the direction the FIA has taken under my leadership, and as encouragement to continue the programme we have pursued over the past eight years. AUTO’s series of in-depth interviews with major players in the automotive world continues in this issue as we talk to two people who have taken their company to the very top of this industry: Li Shufu has turned Geely into the symbol of the Chinese auto industry, while Alberto Bombassei has placed Italian brake company Brembo at the technological cutting edge in motor sport and in the world of road cars. Over the past two years, diesel power has been a very tricky topic, causing confusion and concern among motorists. But what exactly is the future of a technology that, for 20 years, had grown so relentlessly? AUTO asks several experts in the field to clear up one of motoring’s biggest debates. The past and the future are woven together through the pages of this magazine. You can read an interview with Alejandro Agag, the promotor of the FIA Formula E Championship, and with talented young racing driver Lando Norris, while also finding a retrospective look at one of the legends of rallying, Walter Röhrl. There is also a feature on one of the most storied race tracks in the USA, namely Sebring. As for the section dedicated to our clubs, this time we look at Norway. There’s plenty more besides. I hope you like it and, as usual, if you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can improve the magazine, we would love to hear from you. Donau, April 24, 2018 – It is one of the toughest race tracks in the FIA World Rallycross Championship (World RX): this weekend (28/29 April) the circuit in the mountains of Montalegre (Portugal) awaits the EKS Audi Sport team and the Audi S1 EKS RX quattro. The circuit, located 1,000 meters above sea level and close to the Spanish border, has a unique character – with fast corners on tarmac, a long straight and a tight and twisty gravel section featuring high curbs. “To find the best set-up compromise for this is a real challenge every time,” says Audi factory driver Mattias Ekström. In 2016 he managed this successfully even though he missed the final due to being involved in somebody else’s start line accident. “Last year, we were not the fastest in Montalegre but as team still took the win in the end. I love this track and the Portuguese spectators, who are mega enthusiastic about motorsport and rallycross.” The classic rallycross circuit attracts tens of thousands of fans every year to the remote mountain region. They turn the event into a real festival. Ekström’s new team mate Andreas Bakkerud is also a big fan of Montalegre. “It is one of my absolute favorite tracks.

In his tenth World Championship finale in a row, the defending rallycross World Champion missed yet another podium finish by 0.4 seconds. In the overall standings, the Swede still holds second behind compatriot Johan Kristoffersson. In the teams’ classification EKS is third at the half-way stage of the season. Ekström made a flying start around the rollercoaster track in Norway. Despite torrential rain, the Swede coped the best with the slippery track at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, and led the overall classification after the first day. “I was a little surprised that we were so fast in the wet, but that was quattro weather,” joked Ekström after the final. “In the dry conditions on Sunday, we struggled again to match the pace of the competition. In the final we lost crucial ground right at the start. This was our own mistake and this ultimately cost us the podium finish.” Although Ekström leaves Norway without a trophy, he still scored 23 important points for the overall standings. After six of twelve rounds, the World Champion is eight points behind the leading VW driver Johan Kristoffersson.

  • REVOLUTIONARY REGULATIONS a New Top Class Will Be Launched For
2020-2024: REVOLUTIONARY REGULATIONS A new top class will be launched for 2020-2024: sleeker prototypes with more marque cachet. While these racing cars will cut quite an imposing figure, they will also retain the usage of a hybrid system while leaving free the choice of combustion engine at a predetermined and fixed cost. The name of the new class will be chosen by popular vote. The 2020-2024 plan will usher in a new era of endurance racing with an ultramodern style of prototype called.... whatever the fans of the discipline decide! Super Sportscar, GTPrototype, Le Mans Supercars or Le Mans Hypercars? The choice is the fans’! The regulations, devised by the ACO and the FIA, focus on the appearance, style and lines of the cars in the new premier league. Team and car diversity in endurance racing is one of the discipline’s foremost trademarks, never truer with the emergence of these stylized yet muscular cars, veritable racing beasts in the spirit and image of endurance. They will take on circuits like Le Mans, Spa, Silverstone, Fuji and Sebring in the day and night, rain or shine, in hot weather as in cold. That calls for a tough prototype, one as imposing as it is ingenious and technological. One that turns heads, like hypercars, supercars, prestigious GTs and concept cars do on the street or at any given motor show. So, why not draw inspiration from those machines to build endurance racing cars? Consider it a done deal. Aerodynamics cannot take precedence over aesthetics. Being the top class, these new prototypes must be technologically powerful and compelling in design and will therefore remain hybrid, with a KERS system in front and 4WD to ensure energy efficiency.
