She was once "thought to be the best Canadian poet of her generation." Marjorie Pickthall was born in 1883 in the west London district of Gunnersbury, to Arthur Christie Pickthall, a surveyor and the son of a Church of England clergyman, and Elizabeth Helen Mary Pickthall (née Mallard), daughter of an officer in the Royal Navy, part Irish and part Huguenot. According to her father, Pickthall had planned her career before she was six; she would be a writer and illustrator of books. Her parents encouraged her artistic talents with lessons in drawing and music; an accomplished violinist, she continued studying violin until she was twenty. By 1890, Pickthall and her family had moved to Toronto, Canada where her father initially worked at the city’s waterworks before becoming an electrical draftsman. Her only brother died in 1894. Marjorie was educated at the Church of England day school on Beverley Street in Toronto, (possibly St. Mildred's College) and from 1899 at the Bishop Strachan School. She developed her skills at composition and made lasting friendships at these schools, despite suffering poor health, suffering from headaches, dental, eye and back problems. -

Northrop Frye and Edmund Blunden Robert D. Denham dmund blunden (1896 to 1974) was Frye’s tutor at Merton College, EOxford University, during the two separate academic years Frye studied there, 1936–37 and 1938–39. Blunden was a poet, teacher, and critic, a survivor of two years in the trenches at Ypres, Somme, and Passchaendaele in World War I, and a close friend of Siegfrid Sassoon, another of the so- called war poets, who, like Blunden, was decorated for bravery. He was a professor of English at the University of Tokyo (1924 to 1927), and on returning to England he had a brief career as a literary journalist, writ- ing for the Nation and the Times Literary Supplement before taking up the position as Fellow and Tutor in English at Merton College in 1931. Blunden was extraordinarily prolific as a poet, prose writer, and journal- ist. Brownlee Jean Kirkpatrick’s bibliography of Blunden contains 3,988 entries, including more than three thousand contributions to periodicals and newspapers. Even so, Ms Kirkpatrick confesses that her bibliography is far from complete (xiii). In 1956 he succeeded Robert Graves as Professor of Poetry at Oxford, a crowning achievement of a life devoted to literature. Blunden was a polymath, as Frye would turn out to be, and much, perhaps most, of his critical writing centred on the nineteenth-century poets and ESC 41.4 (December 2015): 69–92 essayists. He wrote books and monographs, which we would characterize today as largely historical and biographical, on Clare, Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge, the Shelleys (Percy and Mary), Byron, and Lamb. -
1642 and 1649 by Iroquois Natives
Canadian Martyrs Church officially blessed Half a country away, Midland, Ont., there is a shrine dedicated to eight Canadian Jesuit Martyrs killed between 1642 and 1649 by Iroquois natives. Now a new church at 5771 Granville Ave. in Richmond has been dedicated to the memory of Sts. Isaac Jogues, Jean de Brebeuf, Charles Garnier, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalemant, Noel Chabanel, John La Lande and Rene Goupil, Jesuit pioneering missionaries who brought the Gospel to the Huron and Iroquois in Canada and the U.S. All were priests except the Jesuit associates Rene Goupil, who was a surgeon, and John La Lande. They were beautified by Pope Pius XI on June 21, 1925, and canonized by the same Pontiff five years later. On March 2, nearly 1,000 jubilant parishioners crowded into the new church while an overflow audience watched the dedication Mass via a closed-circuit broadcast in the parish hall. Archbishop Adam Exner, OMI, exhorted Canadian Martyrs’parishioners to adhere to their sainted patrons’ legacy of “determination, steadfast faith, and unwavering commitment to building up the Kingdom of God here on earth.” The house, he said, is a witness of their faith to all who look upon it. “The parishioners of this parish, most of them, have come from faraway countries and have seen the need to build a new parish. After much searching, the land and the church were bought. Many of you were here for the blessing of the first church. Soon after, it became clear that the church was simply too small and that a new and larger church and parish facilities were needed. -

The content selection and coMpilation of the writings was from a national point of view related to all parts of Canadian urbanization. The materials accumulated or referred to them during six months are included here in various categories taking into consideration the physical and human elements of each work:1) Faces of the City: descriptions, rejection of and attraction to the city; 2) Faces in the City: dwellers life styles, reactions, age, ef'-nic groups, city natives; 3) Poverty; 4) Handicapped; 5)So-. Tres; and, 6) Pollution. Jesuit Responses to Native American Dreams in the Early Seventeenth Century

Van Kley, Advisor Professor Matt Goldish ____________________________________ Professor Alice Conklin Advisor History Graduate Program ABSTRACT Recent scholarship on the seventeenth-century Jesuit-Amerindian encounter in New France has emphasized the cultural disruptiveness and loss of the various native groups as a result of the missionary project. Crucial to understanding this loss of traditional Amerindian culture, however, is a parallel understanding of the cultural and intellectual forces coming from Europe which shaped and often restricted the Jesuits’ attitudes toward native customs. Examining the first fifty years of the cross-cultural encounter through the lens of dream interpretation, this paper argues that the Jesuits made several adjustments to their initial assumptions and responses toward native dreams. Although the Jesuits originally denounced all native dreams as superstitious, the advent of native convert dreams forced the Jesuits to recognize the placement of at least some native dreams within traditional Christian categories of visions and miracles, even though some of these dreams retained characteristics which they condemned in traditional native dreams. Over time, however, the Jesuits’ accommodating policy drew criticisms from competing missionaries. Because the dispute centered on events in China rather than Canada, the acceptability of convert dreams was resolved first by a silence on the issue in public records and later by a retraction of the papal condemnation of the Chinese Rites ruling and certain accomodationist practices. -

Inhabiting New France: Bodies, Environment and the Sacred, c.1632-c.1700 Robin Macdonald PhD University of York History September 2015 2 Abstract The historiography of colonial and ‘religious’ encounters in New France has tended to focus on encounters between human beings, between ‘colonisers’ and ‘colonised’ or ‘natives’ and ‘newcomers’. This thesis will focus on encounters between people and environment. Drawing on recent anthropology, notably the work of Tim Ingold, it will argue that whilst bodies shaped environment, environment also could shape bodies – and their associated religious practices. Through the examination of a broad variety of source materials – in particular, the Jesuit Relations – this thesis will explore the myriad ways in which the sacred was created and experienced between c.1632 and c.1700. Beginning with the ocean crossing to New France – an area largely unexplored in the historiographical literature – it will argue that right from the outset of a missionary’s journey, his or her practices were shaped by encounters with both humans and non-humans, by weather or the stormy Ocean Sea. Reciprocally, it will argue, missionary bodies and practices could shape these environments. Moving next to the mission terrain, it will analyse a variety spaces – both environmental and imaginary – tracing the slow build up of belief through habitual practices. Finally, it will chart the movement of missionaries and missionary correspondence from New France back to France. It was not only missionaries, it will argue, who could experience -

Lorne Pierce, Ryerson Press, and The lMakters of Canadian Literature Series Margery Fee Probably every university library in Canada has, scattered through its Cana- dian Literatuire section, most of the thirteen blue and gold volumes of Ryer- son Press's Makers of Canadian Literature series.' It is just as probable that some of these volumes rarely leave the shelves: who is likely to want a book on Robert Norwood, Arthur Stringer, or Peter McArthur today? Charles G.D. Roberts, Isabella Valancy Crawford, and Stephen Leacock are still widely taught, but the canon has shifted away from William Henry Drum- mond, Thomas Haliburton, William Kirby, and even John Richardson. Louis Fréchette, Frangois-Xavier Garneau, and Antoine G6rin-Lajoie are all impor- tant figures in Quebec history, but none is now claimed as a great poet or novelist. Still, the history of the series is of interest to bibliographers, anti- qluarian book dealers, and literary historians. Lately, critical attention has turned to such matters as the economics of literary production, the history of the audience's 'reception' of particular works, the formation of national canons, and the description of the institutions connected with any special- ized discourse. The history of the Makers of Canadian Literature series touches on all these matters. The series can by no means be described as an unequivocal success: it failed financially, and some of its volumes are uncritical and badly written. Still, other volumes are readable and makte good critical sense. And the mere process of preparing the series generated, uncovered, and preserved a great deal of information about Canada's early literary history that, while it remains to be fully exploited, will undoubtedly be useful to both scholars and critics. -

Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2012 ABSTRACT A PLACE UNDER HEAVEN: AMERINDIAN TORTURE AND CULTURAL VIOLENCE IN COLONIAL NEW FRANCE, 1609-1730 Adam Stueck Marquette University, 2012 This doctoral dissertation is entitled, A Place Under Heaven: Amerindian Torture and Cultural Violence in Colonial New France, 1609-1730 . It is an analysis of Amerindian customs of torture by fire, cannibalism, and other forms of cultural violence in New France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Contemporary French writers and many modern historians have described Amerindian customs of torturing, burning, and eating of captives as either a means of military execution, part of an endless cycle of revenge and retribution, or simple blood lust. I argue that Amerindian torture had far more to do with the complex sequence of Amerindian mourning customs, religious beliefs, ideas of space and spatial limits, and a community expression of aggression, as well as a means of revenge. If we better understand the cultural context of Amerindian torture, we see more clearly the process of cultural accommodation in New France.
