IDEOLOGY OF THE FARAIZI MOVEMENT OF BENGAL ABSTRACT i THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF THE il "^ »L;i. ! HISTORY I i ^ if By » <t MUHAMMAD AHSAN ULLAH Under the Supervision of PROF. ISHTIYAQ AHMAD ZILLI CENTRE OF ADVANCED STUDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2001 ABSTRACT The Faraizi movement of Bengal was the first organized Islamic revivalist movement in British India, it was not merely a religious movement but its activities also extended to socio-economic, political, cultural, dawah, and agrarian spheres. Its genesis could be traced to local factors such as religious^ socio-economic and political conditions prevailing at that time in Bengal. But it was also influenced by the general awakening in the Muslim world and the rise of Islamic revivalist movements during the 19**' century throughout the Muslim world. This movement was launched by Haji Shariatullah (17S1-1840) in the first quarter of nineteen century in British Bengal. The basic aims and objectives of the movement were related to the religious reform and restoration of the true Islamic spirit but gradually its activities were extended to the spheres of Politics, economy and culture as without all round upliftment of the Muslims no real change could be expected to take place. Morover, as Islam does not countenance a division among the various sphere^ of human society, the Faraizis could not have legitimately looked over these aspects. 2- This thesis seeks to put the the Faraizi movement in its correct perspective by working out its ideology in relation to not only religion but other aspects of its activities which covered politics, economy, culture etc.

With vast low lying areas, Bangladesh is considered as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. Strengthening the resilience to climate change is pivotal in all its development and poverty alleviation activities. The city of Khulna, being located in the coastal area of Bangladesh, and influenced by tides from the Bay of Bengal, is highly vulnerable to climate change. The increasing salinity intrusion into the city waters and the anticipated sea level rise might have a major impact on the water resources and the water and drainage infrastructure of the city and its surrounding areas. The city experiences frequent water logging during the rainy season.

  • Tracing the Journey of Khan Jahan Ali from Barobazar to Bagerhat
Jurnal Full Paper Kemanusiaan TRACING THE JOURNEY OF KHAN JAHAN ALI FROM BAROBAZAR TO BAGERHAT Fatiha Polina*, Dhrubo Alamb aResearch and Design, Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes and Settlements, Dhaka, Bangladesh. bDhaka Transport Coordination Authority, Dhaka, Bangladesh *Corresponding author [email protected] Received: 15 May 2018 Received in revised form: 14 December 2018 Accepted: 25 December 2018 Published : 30 April 2019 Abstract According to the Department of Archaeology, Bangladesh, there is about 423 listed archaeological sites in the country. But, there are many more yet to be unrevealed. Their true value remains unseen to the world if not taken proper action and acknowledgement. Khan Jahan Ali, on his famous journey from Champanagar (currently in Barobazar, greater Jhenaidah district) to Khalifatabad (present day Bagerhat district); he crossed quite a few remote areas and set up human settlements. On his way he built roads, dug large water bodies for fresh supply of water, established mosques and houses for the inhabitants. His unique construction style is quite evident on the structures along the 112.7 km long road distinguished by an old earthen embankment, traversing through (i) Barobazar, (ii) Murali-Qasba, (iii) Poyogram-Qasba and (iv) Khalifatabad (Bagerhat) The road is still known as Khanjali Road. The first segment of this road, known as Hakimpur - Barobazar road contains nine sultanate mosques of which only few have been documented properly by the authorities and the rests are barely mentioned. This study aims to fill up this gap, explore more into the contribution of Khan Jahan Ali on the four settlements he set up and their history by linking them with the monuments.

After various investigations including aerodynamic tests on large scale three dimensional prototypes, actual construction of the bridge began in May 1988, and took a total often years. The AKB was opened to traffic on April 5, 1998. The AKB become the longest suspension bridges in the world, surpassing the Humber Bridge (England, 1,410 meter center span) by 581 meters. • Religion, Nature, and Life in the Sundarbans
Sufia M. Uddin Connecticut College Religion, Nature, and Life in the Sundarbans The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world, spanning across the borders of Bangladesh and India. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its ecological uniqueness and importance to all humanity. The Sundarbans is home to diverse species and some of the poorest twelve million people in the world. Hindu and Muslim fisherfolk and honey collec- tors who call this place home share a respect for the forest and venerate Bon- bibi (Forest Lady), who they believe reigns over the forest and its inhabitants. For them, she offers protection. This article argues that in their ritual and ethical practices, these Muslims and Hindus treat the Sundarbans as sacred land. It is sacred because it provides all they need to live a sustainable life. This study combines textual analysis of the epic poem about Bonbibi entitled the Jahuranama with ethnographic studies and field visits. Keywords: Bengali—Bonbibi—fisherfolk—forest—Hindu—honey collector—Muslim—sacred groves Asian Ethnology Volume 78, Number 2 • 2019, 289–309 © Nanzan University Anthropological Institute As the Bonbibi puja begins, in front of the forest gods stretches a thick carpet of flowers and food, a feast of scent and sound, a luxurious stage upon which the gods can play, seduced and intoxicated with comfort and delight. The priest, kneeling and bowing to the images, tweaks his own ears, then his nostrils. This is a way of purifying himself and apologizing for any errors he might commit in the puja . the priest mimics the tweaking a Bengali mother might use to gen- tly reprimand a naughty son.
