The mud along some streets is above the cars in the driveways. I went to the site of one of the levees that broke. Where I stood, three houses used to stand. Now it is three empty lots. Mud blocks demolished homes Across the street you see a roof of one house in someone else’s backyard, a car upside down on top of another neighbor’s car, empty concrete slabs. In the poorest section of New Orleans it looked like two bombs (Katrina and Rita) had hit. No signs of life. Streets still impassable because someone’s house is in the middle of it. And everywhere you look you see the telltale signs of the flood: a water line left behind where the waters settled and remained for the weeks before the water was pumped out. Every house in all of these neighborhoods has that water line
