  • (TU Dresden) Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals?
Accepted manuscript version of: Schwanebeck, Wieland. “Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena.” Contemporary Masculinities in the UK and the US: Between Bodies and Systems, edited by Stefan Horlacher and Kevin Floyd, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, pp. 75–98, doi:10.1007/978-3-319-50820-7. Wieland Schwanebeck (TU Dresden) Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena Though it may not have required drastic proof, recent news from the political arena suggests that certain distinguished statesmen tend to rely on a candid exhibition of genitals in order to draw attention to their virility and, by implication, to their political power. Silvio Berlusconi made the headlines in 2010, when he insisted that the missing penis of a Mars statue be restored before the sculpture was deemed suitable to adorn his office as Italian Prime Minister, horrified reactions amongst art historians notwithstanding (cf. Williams). This anecdote sits comfortably amongst other tales from the bunga bunga crypt, yet one may as well wonder whether Berlusconi is not just a tad less inhibited than some of his colleagues when it comes to acknowledging that the body politic requires visible proofs of manhood. Slavoj Žižek has characterized the contemporary media environment as one in which it would not appear out of the question for a politician to “allow a hard-core video of his or her sexual shenanigans to circulate in public, to convince the voters of his or her force of attraction or potency” (208).

Across Britain, nature is in vogue, the countryside is the new chic. The vintage pastoral patterns of Cath Kidston, the bright floral designs and gentrified tweed of Joules, and the Hunter-welly clad urbanites clambering down from their Range Rovers boldly proclaim the rural as a middle- class fashion statement. A perceived ‘nature deficit’ has fuelled a new interest in all things rural, rustic and wholesome, as seen in the expansion of charitable organisations like the National Trust and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Membership of such associations are at an all-time high – in 2010, the number of RSPB members stood at more than double that of the three major political parties.1 Both now place new emphasis on family adventures in the outdoors; the new ‘natural playgrounds’ of the National Trust parallel the growing Forest School movement. In bookshops, ‘new nature writing’ dominates the shelves whilst window displays are full of bucolic book covers, nature lino prints, and matching floral tea towels. Essayists, anecdotal writers, prose-poets, and natural historians like Robert Macfarlane, Kathleen Jamie, Roger Deakin, and Helen MacDonald (to name but a few) call us back to the wild, opening our eyes to their landscapes (and ours) with beautiful and nostalgic evocations of what we are missing in the twenty-first century. Often, this nostalgia drives the authors backwards, to a lost landscape that is at once more remote and free of human interference (except that of the lonely poet). Sometimes it is conflicted: Jamie has criticised the romanticized stance of the ‘lone, enraptured male’ nature writer, with time and funds to conquer far-off Celtic fringes.2 Others argue that when the rural is eulogised, the urban becomes lamented.

  • Shakespeare and London Programme
andShakespeare London A FREE EXHIBITION at London Metropolitan Archives from 28 May to 26 September 2013, including, at advertised times, THE SHAKESPEARE DEED A property deed signed by Mr. William Shakespeare, one of only six known examples of his signature. Also featuring documents from his lifetime along with maps, photographs, prints and models which explore his relationship with the great metropolis of LONDONHighlights will include the great panoramas of London by Hollar and Visscher, a wall of portraits of Mr Shakespeare, Mr. David Garrick’s signature, 16th century maps of the metropolis, 19th century playbills, a 1951 wooden model of The Globe Theatre and ephemera, performance recording and a gown from Shakespeare’s Globe. andShakespeare London In 1613 William Shakespeare purchased a property in Blackfriars, close to the Blackfriars Theatre and just across the river from the Globe Theatre. These were the venues used by The Kings Men (formerly the Lord Chamberlain’s Men) the performance group to which he belonged throughout most of his career. The counterpart deed he signed during the sale is one of the treasures we care for in the City of London’s collections and is on public display for the first time at London Metropolitan Archives. Celebrating the 400th anniversary of the document, this exhibition explores Shakespeare’s relationship with London through images, documents and maps drawn from the archives. From records created during his lifetime to contemporary performances of his plays, these documents follow the development of his work by dramatists and the ways in which the ‘bardologists’ have kept William Shakespeare alive in the fabric of the city through the centuries.

Photo: Steve Tanner WELCOME 2016 – a momentous year – in which the world celebrated the richness of Shakespeare’s legacy 400 years after his death. Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to have played a part in those celebrations in 197 countries and led the festivities in London, where Shakespeare wrote and worked. Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour. On Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, we welcomed President Obama to the Globe. Actors performed scenes from the late plays running in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Southwark Cathedral, a service which was the only major civic event to mark the anniversary in London and was attended by our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

  • The Nation's Matron: Hattie Jacques and British Post-War Popular Culture
The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron. Keywords: Hattie Jacques; Matron; Carry On films; ITMA; Hancock’s Half Hour; Sykes; star persona; post-war British cinema; British popular culture; transgression; carnivalesque; comedy; femininity; nursing; class; spinster. 1 Hattie Jacques (1922 – 1980) was a gifted comedienne and actor who is now largely remembered for her roles as an overweight, strict and often lovelorn ‘battle-axe’ in the British Carry On series of low- budget comedy films between 1958 and 1973. A key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, Hattie Jacques’s star meanings are condensed around the contradictions she articulated between power, desire, femininity and class.

  • The Road to Bristol Old Vic
250 YEARS OLD Thank you for being part of one of the most significant anniversaries in the history of British theatre. We’ve done our best to curate a programme worthy of your efforts, inspired by the astonishing creativity of the thousands of artists – from Sarah Siddons to Sally Cookson – who have delighted and entertained you and your forebears over the last 250 years. But at heart, ours is a story of passion, survival and reinvention. All the other theatres producing plays in 1766 have fallen down or been demolished because, at some point in their history, their audiences abandoned them. This one has survived because each time it’s faced disaster, Bristolians from all over the world have given it new life. It happened in 1800, when popular demand led to the ceiling being tipped up and the new gallery being built, increasing the capacity to an eye-watering 1,600. It happened in 1933 when Blanche Rogers initiated the campaign that the old place should be saved and become ‘Bristol’s Old Vic’. It happened in 2007 when Dick Penny held the open meeting (which many of you attended), leading to the Arts Council continuing its vital support for the theatre. And it’s happening throughout this wonderful anniversary, as you carry us towards the final stage of the refurbishment that will set us securely on our adventures over the next 250 years. So as you read about the shows we’re staging and the projects we’re curating during our birthday year, don’t forget to give yourself a warm pat on the back for being the people who are, in the end, responsible for all of it.
