ABSTRACT The family Neritidae has representatives in tropical and subtropical regions that occur in a variety of environments, and its known fossil record dates back to the late Cretaceous. However there have been few studies of molecular phylogeny in this family. We performed a phylogenetic reconstruction of the family Neritidae using the COI (722 bp) and the 16S rRNA (559 bp) regions of the mitochondrial genome. Neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were performed. The best phylogenetic reconstruction was obtained using the COI region, and we consider it an appropriate marker for phylogenetic studies within the group. Consensus analysis (COI +16S rRNA) generally obtained the same tree topologies and confirmed that the genus Nerita is monophyletic. The consensus analysis using parsimony recovered a monophyletic group consisting of the genera Neritina , Septaria , Theodoxus , Puperita , and Clithon , while in the Bayesian analyses Theodoxus is separated from the other genera. -

E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The fauna of molluscs associated with deep subtidal Zostera marina beds (12-16 m) in southern Spain (Albo- ran Sea) has been characterised in terms of micro-habitat preference, feeding guilds and biogeographical affinity. The species list (162 taxa) is based on sampling completed before the strong eelgrass decline experienced in 2005-2006, using different methods (small Agassiz trawl covering 222 m2 and quadrates covering 0.06 m2) and different temporal scales (months, day/night). Dominant epifaunal species are Jujubinus striatus, Rissoa spp. and Smaragdia viridis in the leaf stratum and Nassarius pygmaeus, Bittium reticulatum and Calliostoma planatum on the sediment. Nevertheless, the infauna dominated the epifauna in terms of number of individuals, including mainly bivalves (Tellina distorta, T. fabula, Dosinia lupinus). The epifauna of both the sediment and leaf strata included high numbers of species, probably due to the soft transition between vegetated and unvegetated areas. The dominant feeding guilds were deposit feeders, filter feeders and peryphiton grazers, but ectoparasites (eulimids), seagrass grazers (Smaragdia viridis) and an egg feeder (Mitrella minor) also occurred, unlike in other eelgrass beds of Europe. Prosobranch Gastropods of Guam

SMITH Marine Laboratory University of Guam Mangilao, Guam 96923 U.S.A. email: [email protected] Abstract—Based on records from invertebrate collections at the University of Guam, specimens cataloged at other institutions, and the published literature, there are 895 species of prosobranch gastropods from Guam. The vast majority of the species are marine, but terrestrial and aquatic prosobranchs are included. Most the species recorded to date are conspicuous, epibenthic species from shallow reef habitats, but some species have been taken from depths up to 400 m. Microgastropods less than 7 mm in size have been poorly investigated to date. Comparison of prosobranch gastropods from Guam and Enewetak reveal that some 56% of the species occurring at Enewetak are found in Guam. Introduction Molluscs have been collected in Guam since the arrival of the earliest inhabitants (Thompson, 1945). Despite the long history of European contact with the island, scant attention was given to systematic investigation of the fauna until the collections of Quoy and Gaimard (1824–1826; 1830–1834). Hidalgo (1904– 1905) was the first to produce a catalog that included molluscs from Guam, but his emphasis was mostly on the Philippine Islands fauna. This catalog was followed by a series of unpublished lists produced by shell collectors and shell club members during the last several decades. Synoptic collections of molluscs from Guam and Micronesia were started by faculty of the University of Guam in the mid-1960s. These collections are housed in the Richard E. Dickinson Memorial Mollusc Collection at the University of Guam Marine Laboratory. -

Abstract The faunal composition of an early Miocene shallow marine mollusc fauna from central-south Java (Indonesia) is investigated. Age determination is based on the accompanying assemblage of large benthic foraminifers. The mollusc assemblage includes 184 species represented by 4,428 individuals of which 158 species (4,086 individuals) are gastropods. In species numbers the fauna is dominated by carnivorous gastropods, but herbivorous gastropods, including grazers and detri- tivores, dominate in terms of abundance. The ecological composition as well as the presence and abundance of certain gastropod taxa (Smaragdia, Bothropoma, Bittiinae) points to seagrass envi- ronments. The excellent preservation of the material hints to relatively low energetic depositional conditions. The mollusc taxa are briefly characterized and/or discussed. Four gastropod species, Bothropoma mediocarinata, Plesiotrochus hasibuani, Rissoina (Rissoina) banyungantiensis, and Rissolina reticuspiralis, are described as new. CORRESPONDING AUTHOR: Renee Anne Rossini, [email protected] Abstract By amalgamating all seagrass‐associated grazing invertebrates into an epiphyte‐ feeding guild the currently accepted model of seagrass trophic dynamics ignores the diverse range of invertebrates that feed directly on, and do considerable damage to seagrasses. Of the wide range of invertebrates documented to directly damage seagrass, the gastropod genus Smaragdia has adaptations and ecology that suggest it could be a completely seagrass feeding group, with two species documented to preferentially consume seagrass. This paper documents the dietary associations of Smaragdia souverbiana, one of the most widely distributed but least studied of the Smaragdia species, in the sub‐tropical east‐ Australian part of its range. Using field‐based assessments of grazing damage and targeted laboratory feeding trials we assess the dietary associations, digestibility and feeding preferences of S. souverbiana with local seagrasses (Halophila ovalis, Zostera capricorni and Cymodocea serrulata), demonstrating that this species consumes and damages all available species but shows a strong preference for the most abundant and moderately digestible Zostera capricorni. -

Tester Memorial Symposium 10-11 April 19801 The Albert L. Tester Memorial Symposium is held in honor of Professor Albert Tester who, at the time of his death in 1974, was Senior Professor of Zoology at the University of Hawaii. The facuIty and students of the Department of Zoology proposed an annual symposium of student research papers as a means of honoring, in a continuing and active way, Dr. Tester's lively encouragement of student research in a broad range of fields within marine biology. Papers reporting original research on any aspect of biology are solicited from students at the University and these papers are presented at the symposium, which takes place during the spring semester. Income from contributions to the Albert L. Tester Memorial Fund of the University of Hawaii Foundation are used to provide two prizes for the best papers by graduate students in the Department of Zoology. Papers are judged on quality, originality, and importance of research reported, as well as the quality of the public presentation. Judges include several members of the faculty of the Department of Zoology as well as winners of the symposium from the preceding year, when possible. In addition, a distinguished scholar from another university is invited to participate in the symposium as a judge and to present the major symposium address. The method used was the survey method by making direct observations on the stations that have been determined. The results of the research include two types of mangroves found, they are Rhizophora stylosa and Aviciena marina. The highest mangrove density was found at station 1, as many as 2302 ind / ha which dominated by R. stylosa. Gastropods found were Casidulla aurisfelis, Cerithidea sp., C. cingulate, C. alata, C. obtusa, Polinices sp., Puperita sp., Tarebia sp., Telescopium telescopium, and Turricula flammea. The Diversity Index obtained is 0.998 - 2.547, indicating moderate diversity. The uniformity index obtained is 0.10 - 0.27, indicating that there was a dominant community. While the relation between mangrove vegetation density and gastropods was 0.95, this shows that there is a very strong relation between the density of mangroves and gastropods. As a baseline for future studies that will enhance the knowledge of this fauna, we have compiled a checklist combining the existing published data with original data from a recent research. Examination of sampled material and a review of the relevant literature revealed the presence of 354 mollusc species. Twelve species have been recorded for the first time in Montenegrin waters, 7 species are of non-native origin while 14 taxa are recognized as endangered and threatened, according to the IUCN Red List and the Barcelona/Berne Conventions. A comparison of our results with those of the neighbouring seas indicates that mollusc fauna is insufficiently studied, but we should bear in mind that the number of recorded species in relation to the size of the researched area points to a rich malacofauna zone.
