Pope Gregory I, “the Great” (+604) is saying Mass after asking God for a sign to help the lack of faith concerning the doctrine of transubstantiation. Christ appears over the altar in a wonderful way making the connection of both His Passion and Resurrection in the Eucharist. Particularly during the "shutdown" I found additional times to read books unopened for a long time! One was Nothing Superfluous: An Explanation of the Symbolism of the Rite of St. Gregory the Great by James W. Jackson. This book will bring you a deeper, richer appreciation for the Mass. It is written clearly, making the information in it accessible for all, and is written as a running commentary on the parts and prayers of the Mass. The book has many wonderful lines: "People usually enter the Church by one of two doors: the door of the intelligence, or the door of beauty. The first is open to scholars and intellectuals. The second is open to anyone – especially those who see with childlike wonder." (47) "The priest's lifting up his hands has a profound human significance, as when a child reaches for his mother, or a friend sees an old friend, or a soldier puts his hands up as he surrenders." (139) Fr. Jackson shows us how every element of the Mass is steeped in thousands of years of history whose organic development was guided by God using man's intellect. In Parish Lounge TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 30, 2020 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2020 The Suffering Servant Reflection on Matthew 16:21-27 Weekly Scripture Today’s Gospel continues the story that began in last week’s Gospel. Simon Peter was Sunday, August 30 called the “rock” upon which Jesus would build his Church, and yet Peter continues Twenty-second Sunday to show the limitations of his understanding of Jesus’ identity. Now that the disciples in Ordinary Time have acknowledged that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus confides in them the outcome of his Jer 20:7-9 ministry: he must suffer and die in Jerusalem to be raised on the third day. Peter rejects Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9 this prediction, and Jesus rebukes him severely, calling him “Satan.” In opposing this Rom 12:1-2 aspect of Jesus’ mission, Peter shows that he is no longer speaking based on the revelation Mt 16:21-27 from God but as a human being. Jesus then teaches all of the disciples about the difficult path of discipleship: to be Christ’s disciple is to follow in his way of the cross. Monday, August 31 Weekday Peter could not yet understand what it meant to call Jesus the Messiah. It is unlikely that 1 Cor 2:1-5 the other disciples understood any better. Messianic expectations were a common aspect Ps 119:97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102 of first-century Judaism. Under Roman occupation, many in Israel hoped and prayed Lk 4:16-30 that God would send a Messiah to free the Jews from Roman oppression. The common view was that the Messiah would be a political figure, a king that would free Israel from Tuesday, September 1 Roman rule. This is perhaps what Peter envisioned when he was led to recognize Jesus Weekday as the Messiah. In this passage, however, Jesus is beginning to teach his disciples that he 1 Cor 2:10b-16 would be the Messiah in a different way. Ps 145:8-9, 10-11, Jesus would be more like the suffering servant described by the prophet Isaiah than the 12-13ab, 13cd-14 political liberator. Those who would be Jesus’ disciples would be called to a similar life Lk 4:31-37 of service. Perhaps this is what Peter feared most in Jesus’ prediction of his Passion. He whom Jesus had called “rock” would also be called upon to offer himself in sacrifice and Wednesday, September 2 service to others. Christian leaders today are still called to sacrifice and serve others as Weekday Jesus did. 1 Cor 3:1-9 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle A.
