I have really enjoyed working beside Roy. He keeps the office running smoothly. He manages the day-to-day tasks with ease. (He may grumble occasionally, but don’t we all?) The best part of working with Roy has been that he does such a great job, and this allows me to do my job. I am so grateful for that. There is never a dull moment working in a church! Everyday can be different. It’s great to have a pal with which to share the excitement.

Roy will retire in August. I’m going to miss him. Thank you Roy for all you have done to make St. Patrick’s a joyful place to work. Thank you also for being my The Episcopal friend. Church Welcomes You. “Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.” (old saying)

Vacation Bible School a Huge Success

"Do good. Seek peace and go after it!" Psalm 34:14b.

Vacation Bible School is one of the most important ministries at St. Patrick's and this year’s program was a huge success. On July 17-21, 99 campers went on an awesome adventure with their favorite Bible heroes and discovered the qualities that make us truly heroic in God. An amazing team of volunteers transformed St. Pat’s into “Hero Central” and facilitated epic crafts, games, music, Bible stories, and science activities to help children explore how to serve God and God’s mission for their lives.

One unique attribute of the St. Patrick’s VBS program is the strong focus on service. This year, youth crew and campers practiced stewardship by supporting the Dublin Free Summer Lunch Program at Daniel Wright Elemen- tary. This program provides an activity period and free hot lunch to children ages 3-5 and those that have just completed Grades K-5. Volunteers:

 Donated playground equipment.  Collected food for the Blessings in a Backpack program.  Made journals and assembled bags with crayons, stickers and markers to be added to the Blessings in a Backpack bags.  Worked at the lunch program (played games with the children, helped with lunch, etc...)

Through the dedication and collaboration of a dynamic team of volunteers, St. Patrick’s realized the VBS mission.

Stewardship Reflection for August

Colossians 3:17 “Whatever you do, whether in speech or action, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus and give thanks to God the Father through him.”

The Stewardship team has chosen the theme of “thought, word, and deed” for the 2017 year. We are excited about this theme because it is so intrinsic to who we are as a parish and how important these ideas are to our faith.

*For “thought,” we live this concept out in our prayer life and we will be calling on the community to pray for stewardship this coming year.

*For “word,” we will call upon our Stewardship Leaders to share with us their stewardship journey during the month of November.

*For “deed,” we will be focusing on our St. Patrick’s Ministries, and how they live out our faith in action.

We say these words every week as we confess our sins. “Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.” This year we will have an opportunity to live out these words in all we do together. We will explore our spiritual gifts, what we each bring to our community of faith, and how these gifts, freely given by our Lord to us, all together make a strong and resilient faith community that can turn our combined strength into transforming our world.

Plastic doesn’t break down but only breaks up into smaller pieces so it will always be Themes for Everyone around polluting our earth. This Month in Episcopal History:

Rev. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet Breaking the Walls of Silence August 27

Societies around the world have long been deficient in integrating into society persons who are physically or men- tally challenged. For centuries these challenges were handled by shunting challenged people aside. Deaf people, for example, were often considered to be insane and were placed into insane asylums for all of their lives. Western societies have been part of the problem, but over the past few centuries have begun to come out of the shadows of such neglect and discrimination.

One example of this neglect and discrimination has been our dealing with the deaf and hearing impaired. A pio- neer in the movement to help such challenged people was Rev. Thomas H. Gallaudet. He was born in 1787 of humble parentage in Connecticut. In his youth, Gallaudet proved to be a very capable scholar graduating from Yale University at the age of 18. He was a man of many interests of which being a minister was one of his top pri- orities.

However, his most important priority was helping those in need. One group in dire need of help was people who were deaf or severely hearing impaired who were trying to come out of their shell of silence and loneliness. This need for help came to Gallaudet’s attention when a neighbor asked him to help the neighbor’s nine-year-old daughter who was deaf. But how does one communicate with someone who cannot hear you? He started by writ- ing the words for objects like flowers and pets and then drawing pictures of them. When this method proved lim- ited, Gallaudet traveled to Europe to study other teaching techniques for the deaf. The method he found most effective was a new French technique known as sign language.

Gallaudet came back to America and traveled around the country seeking private and public funding to open up a school for the deaf. He finally succeeded in opening his school in 1817 which became known as the American School for the Deaf. From his school, Rev. Gallaudet helped many out of the shadow of their disability into the light of being able to effectively communicate with others. One of his first graduates was the little neighbor girl who first brought the problem of deafness to Gallaudet’s attention.

Rev. Gallaudet’s example of helping the hearing impaired was carried forward by his children. His youngest son, Edward, founded the first college for the deaf in 1864 which became Gallaudet University in 1886. Another son, Thomas, became an Episcopal minister who spent much of his ministry helping the deaf.

Rev. Thomas H. Gallaudet is honored each August 27 on the Episcopal calendar for his compassionate and pio- neering work.
