Q. One of my friends has a birthday coming up really soon. Since we party fairly frequently anyway, just one more party seems a bit Questions anticlimactic for a birthday celebration. What are some other good ideas for stuff we can do? A. While the birthday party is a tradition extending all the way back to Adam giving Eve a rib while wearing a pointy hat and blowing a noisemaker, for Quinn it can become a bit redundant since it happens year after year after year for so many people. Add in all the parties you have just because, and party overload is not uncommon. Luckily, just about anything you want to do can become a birthday party/celebration/festivus maximus. The only criteria to turn a normal activity or outing into birthday related fun is that you lavish embarrassingly large amounts of attention on the birthday boy or girl. So go to a cheap restaurant and have the staff come over and sing. Get all dressed up and go to a fancy restaurant. Go bowling and ask the alley manager if you can have an old pin for a birthday souvenir, and get everyone there to sign it. Do something completely different and celebrate the person that actually did all the work however many years ago it was and throw a “labor party” for the mom. Go play laser tag or paintball and gang up on the old(er) person. Surprise them with a movie marathon of all the films they have wanted to watch but never got around to. If you really feel the need you could even give the birthday boy or girl a rib while wearying a pointy hat and blowing a noisemaker. Whatever you do, just have fun and celebrate. That is, after all, the entire point, whether you do it with a party or not.

Q. I tend to be a rather private person when it comes to my relationships, especially ones that are just starting. So even though it has been a few weeks since a friend and I happily discovered our interest in each other was reciprocated, neither of us has made a effort to point this out to our rather large group of mutual friends. We aren’t dating and have no plans to do so yet, but even though it is an unofficial “thing” should we still tell everyone what is going on? A. I hate to be the one to burst your carefully created privacy bubble, but I can almost guarantee that at least one or two of your friends already know or at least suspect whatever it is that is going on with the two of you. It’s college; privacy among friends when you see them twenty-four hours a day doesn’t really exist. There are a hundred little things that people can and will notice in your new behavior. And you probably won’t even realize you are doing anything obvious because you are too wrapped up in the giddiness of a new interest to see it happening. So when the two of you find ways to be alone at lot more often than you used to, or the inside jokes increase exponentially, or you even go so far as to change your Facebook picture to one of the two of you looking adorable, your friends are going to know that something is going on even if they aren’t sure what. Since you can’t stop them from finding out anyway, your options are really down to whether you want to tell them now or let them guess and drag it out of you later. One of the best reasons to simply go ahead and tell everyone is to stop rumors before they start. It is incredibly easy for things to be blown out of proportion; gossip is more entertaining that way. The catch to that is you don’t have something simple to tell them, judging by the very descriptive “thing” that is your term for this new relationship. Labels definitely make announcements easier, but if you don’t want to be labeled incorrectly you will have to take the time to explain to at least a few of your closest friends what is really going on. It might seem like it is getting too serious too fast if you talk about it, but it will make things much simpler in the long run. If you just can’t bring yourself to start the conversation, wait until one of your friends reads this column and makes the connection. The “Hey, that sounds exactly like you two!” will be all the prompting you need. THE RETRIEVER WEEKLY February 6, 2007 Arts & Entertainment 19

Colts win Super Bowl XLI

The Indianapolis Colts overtook the Chicago Bears 29-17 on Sunday to take the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLI. Manning was 24 for 38 in passing for 247 yards with one interception and one touchdown. Indianapolis’ star quarterback was also named MVP of the game. Dominic Rhodes had 21 carries for 113 yards while Joseph Addai had 19 carries for 77 yards and caught ten passes for 66 yards. Besides Manning winning his first ring, Head Coach Tony Dungy was the first African-American coach to win a Super Bowl. There were many firsts in the Super Bowl that night besides Dungy’s first ring as a coach; it was the first night it rained as well as the first time a team scored on the opening kickoff return. The Bear’s Devin Hester ran for 92 yards to give Chicago a 6-0 lead. The rest of the first half alone had six turnovers, three for both teams, a botched field goal attempt by the Colts, and a missed field goal by one of the NFL’s most reliable kickers, Adam Vinatieri. Rex Grossman finished with 165 yards passing and two costly interceptions, one of which was picked off by Colt’s cornerback Kelvin Hayden who returned it 56 yards for a touchdown.

Barbaro euthanized after complications

The famed Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro was euthanized last Monday morning due to complications from his awful accident at Preakness last year. The prized colt went through almost two dozen surgeries to have a rod and many pins inserted into his right hind leg after it shattered in the opening strides of the race. Barbaro looked as though he would beat the odds and recover, but in July he developed laminitis in his left hind leg. Last Sunday, the horse’s condition reached a critical point when both legs were infected with the critical disease. A very tough decision was reached by doctors to put Barbaro down for it would have been to painful for the horse to continue treatment as well as a very poor outlook for recovery. 26 February 6, 2007 THE RETRIEVER WEEKLY Classifieds
