This year, on Sunday, Rhythm and Roots continued on page 2 September 17, we will bring back The Rock Hall Ramblers for this annual celebration.

Here’s a bit more about how this musical version of our Eucharist has come to be.

In 2005 a movement burst forth from the Millennial Development Goals in which the traditional hymns music used with the Eucharist from The Book of Common Prayer were substituted with the music of the Irish rock band . The “U2charist” is still widely practiced throughout the world and in various denominations. The connection behind this movement is that lead singer , who was raised in the (Anglican) Church of Ireland, spent his life living out his faith through his song writing and his global philanthropy. The band’s lyrics are known for their social and political themes, as well as for their religious imagery. Thus using songs like “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “” fit well with the liturgy.

Others have incorporated specific musical mediums into the Eucharist including jazz or folk music, perhaps influenced by the success of the U2charist or by the effort of bringing in young people, emphasizing social justice, or simply to “sing to the Lord a new song (Psalm 96).” The Rock Hill Ramblers—Schéry Collins, bass; Kathy Dunagan, mandolin; Carolyn Haynes, fiddle; Michael Kahn, guitar; Bob Minke, banjo; Susan Thomas, dobro; Teresa Spangler, banjo
