Amnesia has a history of problems caused by opening and closing parties over running their allowed hours. Some have said the level of penalty they may incur for breaching regulations is inconsequential compared to the additional income they can derive by staying open. This latest move by the authorities to clamp down fol- lows problems at last weekend’s Music On closing party which was due to close at 6am but overran until 9am. The police say they gave repeated warnings to Amnesia and in light of them not having been adhered to, they have revoked this coming weekends closing party late license, which would have allowed them to remain open until midday on Sunday, the same time as Space in Playa den Bossa last weekend. Five people were arrested for drug possession. 3 were arrested for being drunk and/or drugged and disorderly. There were 28 traffic offences and 5 cars were towed. Editorial Comment On the one hand I get that noise can be very aggravat- ing to people. On the other hand this is another exam- ple of Ibiza needing to decide whether or not it wants the tourist income derived from party people. A factor that will have increased the annoyance to people who prefer to keep things quiet, is that the closing parties are now far more spread out. There used to be a 'closing weekend'. Now it is more a clos- ing fortnight, with competing clubs trying to avoid competing with each other for closing party business. Perhaps a compromise solution could be to nominate a single opening and closing weekend. Clubs wanting the extended licence would have to hold their parties on those dates, thereby minimising the annoyance to residents. As a consequence it would also make the opening and closing weekends 'special' in the way they originally were. By setting the opening weekend relatively early, and closing relatively late, the town halls could also make an effort to stop the shortening of the season. ! " SUBSCRIBE Inside Elrow, The Party Taking Over The World From confetti cannons to inflatable spaceships, this world-travelling carnival is a must-see. BY LOUISE DONOVAN 06/12/2018 # $ % PABLO DASS Little green men sprint past me. A group of apes with toy guns parade onto the stage and start dancing. Moments later, astronauts with oversized bubble helmets rise up and start swinging from the ceiling on circus hoops. Giant confetti cannons explode without warning, while house music reverberates around the 5,000-strong capacity venue. I'm in Ibiza, at Elrow's closing party in superclub Amnesia. Whacky, explosive and filled with lots of balloons, their USP is immersive clubbing. This particular party? It's called RowAttacks and takes place in the year 3135 when all the other planets have disappeared. The galaxy and all space creatures 'died of boredom' after being 'killed off by the evil Planet Sensible.' Luckily, 'the wildest party animals from every planet survived.' % ANDREI OPRESCU Sounds mad, sure, but that's just tonight. Other themed parties included 'Psychedelic Trip' and Brazilian jungle carnivals. You might find yourself dancing next to a stormtrooper, or in front of lots of oversized space ships. What started as a jamboree on the outskirts of Barcelona has now expanded into a world-travelling carnival. In just two years, Elrow have gone from just Spain to hosting parties in Johannesburg, Australia Sao Paulo and Peru. They've expanded to five continents; next year they'll be doing 14 shows in China. In the UK, clubs have been shutting at an alarming rate (the numbers halved between 2005 and 2015).

  • Baby Raves: Youth, Adulthood and Ageing in Contemporary British EDM Culture
Baby Raves: Youth, Adulthood and Ageing in Contemporary British EDM Culture Feature Article Zoe Armour De Montfort University (UK) Abstract This article begins with a reconsideration of the parameters ofage in translocal EDM sound system and (super)club culture through the conceptualisation of a fluid multigenerationality in which attendees at EDM-events encompass a spectrum of ages from 0–75 years. Since the 1980s, it remains the case that the culture is fuelled through a constant influx of newcomers who are predominantly emerging youth, yet there are post-youth members in middle adulthood and later life that are also a growing body that continues to attend EDM-events. In this context, the baby rave initiative (2004–present) has capitalised on a gap in the family entertainment market and created a new chapter in (super)club and festival culture. I argue that the event is a catalyst for live heritage in which the accompanying children (aged from 0–12 years) temporarily become the beneficiaries of their parent’s attendee heritage and performance of an unauthored heritage. Keywords: fluid multigenerationality, EDM-family, baby rave, live heritage, unauthored heritage Zoe Armour is completing a PhD in electronic dance music culture. Her work is interdisciplinary and draws from the fields of cultural sociology, popular music, memory studies, media and communication and film. She is the author of two book chapters on Ageing Clubbers and the Internet and the British Free Party Counterculture in the late 1990s. She is a member of the Media Discourse Centre, IASPM and follows the group for Subcultures, Popular Music and Social Change.

  • Aristofreeks Is an Ibiza-Based DJ, Producer And
Aristofreeks is an Ibiza-based DJ, producer and remix collaboration between DMC mixing championship finalist Max Martire (Space/Amnesia Ibiza/Warner Music) and Shanti Matkin. Growing up in Ibiza, Max Martire is one of the pioneers of the Ibiza EDM DJ scene, and was instrumental in changing the musical direction of the island in its EDM Superclub infancy. Along with his Italian DJ partner Daniele Poli and their counterparts, British DJ duo Alex P and Brandon Block, they created the legendary Space Terrace phenomenon. By converting this neglected part of the Space discotheque into a sunny paradise, they changed the spirit of the island for all time. Max’s contribution shaped what is today’s Ushuaia. He has also held residencies at Space and Amnesia, as well as being a sought-after DJ for the largest, most exclusive private parties on the island. He has toured extensively throughout Europe, breaking first ground in the EDM global culture. His reputation for flawless mixing and beat-matching precision earned him the nickname “The Surgeon”. Max has been DJ’ing since he was 13 years old, and his life-long unique DJ style has been dedicated to playing 70’s funky, soulful disco house, delving into his collection of 22,000+ vinyls, and he is at the forefront of the “Nu-Disco” trend that is taking off throughout Ibiza and Europe. Shanti Matkin’s phenomenal output is the direct consequence of starting young and producing with a passion. He played his first club in Amsterdam at the age of 13, and with the mentoring of his older brother Riktam (GMS) he shaped his early recordings along with the first wave of trance pioneers resulting in dozens of XXX releases and DJ dates across the globe including regular outings to Europe, Mexico and Japan.
