    Libraries, Prisons, and Abolition 2020 Liv Graham, MLIS The following is a three part series I have written on prisons, libraries, and abolition in conclusion of my coursework. Each Tuesday for three weeks, a new piece will be published on the DLIS blog. The first piece is a guide for library workers who have limited experiences with the prison-industrial complex, providing an overview of prisons, jails, and detention centers in the U.S.; examining the intent and effects of increased incarceration rates; and defining some core tenets of/broad approaches to abolitionist thinking. The second piece focuses on the library as an institution that, produced under the forces of moralistic reformatory thinking, inevitably influenced the operations and procedures of the institution maneuvered under american racial capitalism. It aims to expand our creative thinking on repair work by looking towards how we can disrupt these systematic processes, such as smashing the professional tenet of neutrality and restructuring LIS pedagogy to be led by the most oppressed, as well as what decolonization and anti-violence strategies could look like for caring, sustainable futures of information institutions. The third piece will focus on practical applications of abolitionist, expansive initiatives you can undertake as someone trained in library work, both as an individual outside your job and as a worker within an institution, in order to work in coordination with incarcerated people in autonomous building and movement by facilitating access to information. It will examine the current pressing information crises specifically inside Indiana prisons exacerbated by the Digital Divide; offering programming and outreach ideas; and elaborating on or critiquing contemporary offered solutions/reforms in LIS like employing social workers in the library or divesting from police partnerships inside your library.

Movements are essen/al to solve society’s major pro0lems includin1 racism, violence, 1ender oppression, climate chan1e, war, etc. This disadvantage addresses the consequences of federal 1overnment ac/on on the momentum and stren1th of social movements. Aeneral social movement theory concludes that 1overnment ac/on 0y Con1ress, courts, president etc. takes away social movement momentum. The pu0lic feels that the issues the movement is addressin1 are 0ein1 solved. The pu0lic pays less aDen/on to the issues 0ein1 address and the movement ul/mately loses its ability to have an impact on society. The disadvantage ar1uments that currently social movements have the inEuence to address major society pro0lems. The linC is that the aFrma/ve plan is a minor 1overnment ac/on that will 0e perceived 0y the pu0lic that the issue is 0ein1 addressed. Althou1h le1al ac/on is usually necessary las/n1 chan1e happens thou1h social persuasion. Smith World Council of Churches, New York, NY USA Public theology, tested ecumenical systems, global international organizations and individual rights are the ideas explored in the writing. Public theology, the act of bringing religious ideas and spirituality to the public square with the intention of changing the public. The ecumenical community, a community of varying Christian faiths has a history of working together for the common good. The United Nations, an intergovernmental organization, crafted to prevent a new World War is the home of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Human Rights Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The project creates a curriculum for religious leaders become experts in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and equip those leaders to teach and preach these human rights in their contexts and hold their governments accountable when rights are violated. Individual human rights extended to everyone, if respected by everyone can strengthen the community writ large. The tension between the individual nature of human rights and the collective nature of religious action are not in opposition to each other, but rather, work hand in hand, an empowered individual joining a community of faith to make life on earth better for all. The development of curriculum for religious leaders establishes the expectations of outcomes as well as the framework for teaching the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the leaders of faith across the world.
