An overview of Nepenthes in the Philippines is presented. Four new species, Nepenthes extincta sp. nov., N. kitanglad sp. nov., N. kurata sp. nov. and N. leyte sp. nov. are described and illustrated from the Philippines and placed in the Nepenthes alata group. An updated circumscription and key to the species of the group is provided. Delimitation and comparison with the Regiae group is given. All four of the newly described species are assessed as threatened using the International Union for the Conservation of Nature 2012 standard, and one, N. extincta sp. nov. is considered likely to be already extinct due to open-cast mining. Logging and conversion of forest habitat are thought to be the main threats to the other three species. Key words. Conservation, Nepenthes alata group, Mindanao, threatened, ultramafic. Kip et al. Biogeosciences (bg-2011-334) Supplementary Material 16S rRNA clone library To investigate the total bacterial community a clone library based on the 16S rRNA gene was performed of the pool Sphagnum mosses from Andorra peat, next to S. magellanicum some S. falcatulum was present in this pool and both these species were analysed. Both 16S clone libraries showed the presence of Alphaproteobacteria (17%), Verrucomicrobia (13%) and Gammaproteobacteria (2%) and since the distribution of bacterial genera among the two species was comparable an average was made. In total a 180 clones were sequenced and analyzed for the phylogenetic trees see Fig. A1 and A2 The 16S clone libraries showed a very diverse set of bacteria to be present inside or on Sphagnum mosses. Compared to other studies the microbial community in Sphagnum peat soils (Dedysh et al., 2006; Kulichevskaya et al., 2007a; Opelt and Berg, 2004) is comparable to the microbial community found here, inside and attached on the Sphagnum mosses of the Patagonian peatlands. Most of the clones showed sequence similarity to isolates or environmental samples originating from peat ecosystems, of which most of them originate from Siberian acidic peat bogs. This indicated that similar bacterial communities can be found in peatlands in the Northern and Southern hemisphere implying there is no big geographical difference in microbial diversity in peat bogs. Four out of five classes of Proteobacteria were present in the 16S rRNA clone library; Alfa-, Beta-, Gamma and Deltaproteobacteria. 42 % of the clones belonging to the Alphaproteobacteria showed a 96-97% to Acidophaera rubrifaciens, a member of the Rhodospirullales an acidophilic bacteriochlorophyll-producing bacterium isolated from acidic hotsprings and mine drainage (Hiraishi et al., 2000). -

Alatae) is described and assessed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) from Luzon, Philippines and appears unrecorded in 110 years. The spectacular, large, narrowly funnel-shaped upper pitchers, lids with recurved basal, and filiform apical appendages, unlike any other species in the Philippines, closely resemble those of N. maxima (Sect. Regiae) of Sulawesi-New Guinea, likely due to convergent evolution. Following recent phylogenomic analysis, sect. Alatae is divided into two, Sect. Alatae sensu stricto of Luzon to Sibuyan (including N. maximoides), and Sect. Micramphorae, expanded and recircumscribed to encompass those species of the southern Visayas, and Mindanao. A key is provided to the six species now recognised in the narrowly recircumscribed Sect. Alatae. The number of Nepenthes species recorded from Luzon has increased from two in 2001, to eight in 2020, all but one of which are endemic to that island, and four of which appear to be point endemics. Primarily by way of recent studies, information on these quaUties in early postlarvae has begun to accrue, information which has not been previously summarized. The change in form (metamorphosis) that occurs between larval and postlarval life is pronounced in some decapod groups but subtle in others. However, in almost all the Deca- poda, some ontogenetic changes in locomotion, feeding, and habitat coincide with meta morphosis and early postlarval growth. The postmetamorphic (first postlarval) stage, here in termed the decapodid, is often a particularly modified transitional stage; terms such as glaucothoe, puerulus, and megalopa have been applied to it. The postlarval stages that fol low the decapodid successively approach more closely the adult form. Morphogenesis of skeletal and other superficial features is particularly apparent at each molt, but histogenesis and organogenesis in early postlarvae is appreciable within intermolt periods. Except for the development of primary and secondary sexual organs, postmetamorphic change in internal anatomy is most pronounced in the first several postlarval instars, with the degree of anatomical reorganization and development decreasing in each of the later juvenile molts. -

Three acidophilic bacteria were isolated from water and sediment samples collected at a coal mining-impacted river, Rio Sangão, located in the city of Criciúma, Santa Catarina state, in southern Brazil. These microorganisms were isolated in acid media and were phylogenetic related to the species Acidiphilium cryptum by its 16S rRNA gene sequences, although they differ from this species in the assimilation of some carbon sources. The optimum and the maximum pH for growth of all strains were nearly 3.0 and 5.0-6.0, respectively. Two of the strains were slightly more acidophilic, with the minimum pH for growth of 2.0. All strains also tolerate the four tested metals (Ni, Zn, Cu and Se) at variable concentrations, with LAMA 1486 being the most metal-resistant strain. These bacteria may belong to different ecotypes of A. cryptum, or even represent new species in the genus. Besides they bear characteristics that make them useful in the development of bioremediation process, for the treatment of sites contaminated with multiple toxic metals, including coal mining drainage. -

An overview of the genus in the Philippines is presented in the context of recent discoveries. The greater taxonomic importance of pitcher characters over those of the flowers in the genus is reviewed and hypotheses are provided to account for this phenomenon. Nepenthes is the only genus of Nepenthaceae Dumort. and includes taxa mainly distributed in Malesia (ca. 125 species), while ca. 12 species occur in Madagascar, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, NE India, Indochina, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Australia. Cheek & Jebb (2001) recorded 87 species of Nepenthes, but since 2001, 54 new specific names have been published in the genus (see IPNI 2013 continuously updated) and others have been resurrected from synonymy. -

Plant habit, and leaf, inflorescence, indumentum and peristome-column morphology appear superficially similar to those of the ultramaficolous montane species of Palawan, implicating an environmental basis for a syndrome of shared characteristics. Novel and Unexpected Bacterial Diversity in An

Biology Direct 2012, 7:28 http://www.biology-direct.com/content/7/1/28 RESEARCH Open Access Novel and unexpected bacterial diversity in an arsenic-rich ecosystem revealed by culture-dependent approaches François Delavat, Marie-Claire Lett and Didier Lièvremont* Abstract Background: Acid Mine Drainages (AMDs) are extreme environments characterized by very acid conditions and heavy metal contaminations. In these ecosystems, the bacterial diversity is considered to be low. Previous culture-independent approaches performed in the AMD of Carnoulès (France) confirmed this low species richness. However, very little is known about the cultured bacteria in this ecosystem. The aims of the study were firstly to apply novel culture methods in order to access to the largest cultured bacterial diversity, and secondly to better define the robustness of the community for 3 important functions: As(III) oxidation, cellulose degradation and cobalamine biosynthesis. Results: Despite the oligotrophic and acidic conditions found in AMDs, the newly designed media covered a large range of nutrient concentrations and a pH range from 3.5 to 9.8, in order to target also non-acidophilic bacteria. These approaches generated 49 isolates representing 19 genera belonging to 4 different phyla. Importantly, overall diversity gained 16 extra genera never detected in Carnoulès. Among the 19 genera, 3 were previously uncultured, one of them being novel in databases. This strategy increased the overall diversity in the Carnoulès sediment by 70% when compared with previous culture-independent approaches, as specific phylogenetic groups (e.g. the subclass Actinobacteridae or the order Rhizobiales) were only detected by culture. Cobalamin auxotrophy, cellulose degradation and As(III)-oxidation are 3 crucial functions in this ecosystem, and a previous meta- and proteo-genomic work attributed each function to only one taxon.
