In additio n to its Dr. Richard L. Osburn 850-ac re campus in Boca Raton, FAU has campuses in Fort University Provost and Lauderdale, Davie, Dania Beach, jupiter and Port St. Lucie. As of August Vi ce President for Research 2001, the University had awarded 82,861 degrees. Mr. Robert M. Friedman University Architect and Vi ce Pres ident In December 1967, Florida Atlantic Unive rsity was elected to Dr. Dorothy Leland reg ul ar membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Campus Vi ce Pre.1ident, Schools. At that time the Commiss ion on Higher Education of the Boca Raton Southern Association granted full accreditatio n to all of the Dr. Joyanne Stephens Campus Vice President, University's programs. In accordance with Association reg ulations, Dcwie this accreditation was reaffirmed in 1972, 1982 and 1992. ANTHONY JAMES C ATANES E Dr. Anthony James Catanese joined Florida Atlantic U niversity as its fourth President in January 1990. Dr. Catanese previously was the Provost of Pratt Institute in New York C ity; Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Florida; Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Pl anning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Professor and Director of the Center for Planning and Development at the Georgia Institute ofTechnolo,gy; and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering and Environmental Design and James A. Ryder Profes sor at the University of Miami. Dr. Catanese also was a Senior Fulbright Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. Dr. Catanese is a member of the Coll ege of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He previously maintained a private practice in design, planning and development. Hi s consulting contracts numbered over 50 clients on projects that included coastal zo ne planning and development in Hawa ii and native land claims in Alaska. As a developer, he built several projects for the single- family and multi-family markets in the Atlanta region. Dr. Catanese has been a public servant as well. He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the National U rban Policy Task Force, and he chaired both the Milwaukee C it y Planning Board and the Gainesville C ity Planning Board. Dr. Catanese was president of the Park West Development Corporatio n, a not-for-profit orga nization that planned and developed a major area of Milwaukee. Dr. Catanese currently serves as a member of the Florida Association of Colleges and U niversities. He is on the boards of the Environmental Education Foundation of Florida and t he Orange Bowl Committee. H e has served o n the Presidents' Commiss ion of the National Coll egiate Athletic Association. A stro ng advocate of public/ private partnerships and innovative m anagement, Dr. Catanese is guiding FA U's growth with entrepreneurial vigor. He was named the 1995 Business Leader of the Year by the G reater Boca Raton C hamber of Commerce; the 1995 Down towner of the Year by the Downtown Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale C hamber of Commerce; the 1996 Broward County Leader of the Year by the Leadership Broward Foundation; and he was given the 1997 Hall of Fam e Award by the G reater Fort Lauderdale C hamber of Commerce. In 1998 Dr. Catanese was inducted into the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame. Most recently, he received four exceptionally high honors: the C hief Executive Leadership Award for outstanding performance by a University President presented by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education; the Exca libur Award for outstanding leadership presented by the Sun-Sentinel; the Si lver Medallion Award of the National Conference for Community and Ju sti ce; and the Diversity C hampion Award presented by the Urban League of Broward County. Dr. Catanese rece ived the Ph .D. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Pl anning and Land Economics; the master's degree in Planning and Public Administration from New York University; and the bachelor's degree in Pl anning and C ivil Engineering from Rutge rs University. He has conducted advanced studies in real estate finance, computers and transportation. A prolific w riter, D r. Catanese has aut hored 13 books, 18 book chapters, more than 65 articles in journals and 35 research monographs. Two of hi s books, Planners and Polit ics: Impo ss ible Dreams and Urban Pl anning, have been best-sellers in their field.
