Dr. Anthony James Catanese joined Florida Atlantic U niversity as its fourth President in January 1990. Dr. Catanese previously was the Provost of Pratt Institute in New York C ity; Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Florida; Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Pl anning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Professor and Director of the Center for Planning and Development at the Georgia Institute ofTechnolo,gy; and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering and Environmental Design and James A. Ryder Profes sor at the University of Miami. Dr. Catanese also was a Senior Fulbright Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia.

Dr. Catanese is a member of the Coll ege of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He previously maintained a private practice in design, planning and development. Hi s consulting contracts numbered over 50 clients on projects that included coastal zo ne planning and development in Hawa ii and native land claims in Alaska. As a developer, he built several projects for the single- family and multi-family markets in the Atlanta region.

Dr. Catanese has been a public servant as well. He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the National U rban Policy Task Force, and he chaired both the Milwaukee C it y Planning Board and the Gainesville C ity Planning Board. Dr. Catanese was president of the Park West Development Corporatio n, a not-for-profit orga nization that planned and developed a major area of Milwaukee. Dr. Catanese currently serves as a member of the Florida Association of Colleges and U niversities. He is on the boards of the Environmental Education Foundation of Florida and t he Orange Bowl Committee. H e has served o n the Presidents' Commiss ion of the National Coll egiate Athletic Association.

A stro ng advocate of public/ private partnerships and innovative m anagement, Dr. Catanese is guiding FA U's growth with entrepreneurial vigor. He was named the 1995 Business Leader of the Year by the G reater Boca Raton C hamber of Commerce; the 1995 Down towner of the Year by the Downtown Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale C hamber of Commerce; the 1996 Broward County Leader of the Year by the Leadership Broward Foundation; and he was given the 1997 Hall of Fam e Award by the G reater Fort Lauderdale C hamber of Commerce. In 1998 Dr. Catanese was inducted into the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame. Most recently, he received four exceptionally high honors: the C hief Executive Leadership Award for outstanding performance by a University President presented by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education; the Exca libur Award for outstanding leadership presented by the Sun-Sentinel; the Si lver Medallion Award of the National Conference for Community and Ju sti ce; and the Diversity C hampion Award presented by the Urban League of Broward County.

Dr. Catanese rece ived the Ph .D. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Pl anning and Land Economics; the master's degree in Planning and Public Administration from New York University; and the bachelor's degree in Pl anning and C ivil Engineering from Rutge rs University. He has conducted advanced studies in real estate finance, computers and transportation.

A prolific w riter, D r. Catanese has aut hored 13 books, 18 book chapters, more than 65 articles in journals and 35 research monographs. Two of hi s books, Planners and Polit ics: Impo ss ible Dreams and Urban Pl anning, have been best-sellers in their field. His latest book is titled Planners on Planning. 3 STATE OF

Kevin C. Clark is C hairman and Chief Executive Officer of ScreamingMedia, Inc., a NASDAQ-listed firm (SCRM) and o ne of the world's leading providers of content and techno logy solutions for all enterprise platforms. With customizable technology solutions and an unparalleled global digital content network, ScreamingMedia serves some of the world 's leading corporatio ns, including Boeing, AT&T, Prodigy, Vodafo ne, Verizo n and Mi crosoft.

Mr. C lark graduated from Flo rida Atlantic University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a major in finance. Four yea rs later, he co-founded Cross Country Travco rps, which quickly became the nation's largest healthcare professional placement firm. Today C ross Country, Inc. (NASDAQ: CCRN), headquartered in Boca Raton, is a publicly traded company with annualized revenues of more than $500 million.

In the mid-90s, Mr. C lark sold a majority interest in C ross Country and turned his attentio n to the Internet. Recogni zing the wave of fundamental change that would transform business worldwide with the advent of the Internet revolutio n, he took the helm of PoppeTyson, o ne of the first three Internet marketing giants. During Mr. C lark's tenure on the board and later as C hairman and C hief Executive Officer, Poppe created Web sites for cli ents that included Intel, Netscape, Priccline and the White House. In 1996, Poppe spun off another company, Doubleclick (NASDAQ: DC LK), which is now the global leader in Internet advertising with more than a o ne-billio n-doll ar market capitalization.

In 1998, Mr. Clark led Poppe Tyson through a successful merge r with Modem Media (NASDAQ: MMPT). Later that year, he was approached by former Ameri ca n Express CEO Jim Robinson III and renowned advertising executive Jay C hi at, who invited him to join the Board of Directors and invest in a small, five employee company founded by Internet entrepreneur AI Ellman. This company ultimately came to be known as ScreamingMedia. As ScreamingMedia's CEO, a position he has held since 1999, Mr. C lark has orchestrated a meteori c increase in sales-from less than $3 millio n to nearly $45 millio n-and he played a key role in taking the company public last August with more than $60 million in capital funding.

Mr. C lark attributes much of hi s success to the excellent educa ti o n he received at Florida Atlantic U niversit y. He learned a great dea l beyond "book knowledge" from the outstanding faculty of the College of Business, which includes retired business professionals who want to pass on insights ga ined during their long, successful caree rs to the next ge neration of entrepreneurs.

MIKE DouGLAS

For 23 yea rs, Mike Douglas' name was sy nonymous with telev ision entertainment in A meri ca- setting the standard for afternoon va ri et y talk shows.

Born in C hicago in 1 925 to an Irish rail road worker and German mother, Mr. Douglas began his career in entertainment shortly after se rving in the U.S. Navy in World War II , when he was invited to sing on the radio show "Meet Your N avy." His performance led to an offer to perfo rm as featured vocalist o n the popular Kay Kyse r radio program "The Kollege of Musica l Knowledge," the number one radio show in the country. Soon afterward, a version of the show was created for telev ision, leading Mr. Douglas to New York.

When "The Kollege of Musica l Knowledge" ended with Mr. Kyse r's retirement, Mr. Douglas moved to C hicago to become the sin ging host of the W GN television prograiTl " Hi , Ladi es!" And in 1961, he was hired by the Westinghouse G roup to pi o neer a new talk-vari ety show in C leveland ca lled simply "The Mike Douglas Show."

The show, which aired each weekday from 1961 to 1984, became the prototype fo r all future ta lk shows that sought to combine spontaneous conve rsation-on virtuall y any subject-with the best in entertainment. Over the course of 23 yea rs and more than 6,000 shows, with guests that included Barbra Streisand, Marl o n Brando, Fred Astaire, Mother Teresa, Presidents Ri chard Ni xon, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan , John Lennon and Yoko O no, Sonny and C her, John Way ne, Mickey Mantle, Jimmy Hoffa, Sophia Loren, Sammy Dav is Jr., Jackie G leason, Barbara Walte rs, Muhammad Ali, and even a two-yea r-old budding golf star named Tige r Woods, Mr. Douglas' show gained the status of a national house party held daily in front of millio ns of viewers. J'U Be Right Bac k: Memories of TV's Greates t Talk Show, by Mr. Douglas and two collaborating authors, was published las t year by Simon & Schuster.

In add ition to hi s stellar career in broadcasting, Mr. Douglas has recorded nu merous albums and singles, including "Old Buttermilk Sky," "That's for Me," "There's No O ne But You," "Ole Lamp Li ghter," and hi s most popul ar song, "The Men in My Little Girl's Life. " This touching tribute to fatherh ood will be reiss ued on CD th is mo nth.

The recipient of five Em my Award s, Mr. Douglas has also been ho nored with a star o n Hollywood's Walk of Fa me-alo ngs ide the great Houdini. He was nominated for a G rammy Award in 1980 in the in spirati onal music category. Amo ng his many other honors are the Freedom Foundation's George Was hingto n Medal, the Medi a Humanita ri an Award and designation as" Broadcasting Man of the Yea r" by the Nati onal Associati on ofT V Program Executives.

Lending color to the pageantry of the Academic Commencement are the academic robes and hoods worn by the faculty and delegates. This regalia dates back to medieval times when it served a functional as well as an ornamental role, separating learned men from other groups and offering warmth and protection.

ln late 19th-century America, a conference was held by representatives of colleges and universities to bring more order and system to the custom of academic dress. Since then, there have been periodic conferences to revise or reconfirm existin g practices.

Essentially, holders of the bachelor's degree wear black robes unadorned. Holders of the master's degree wear hoods that are lined with the colors of the college conferring the degree and trimtTted with the color representing the subject in which the degree was earned. The doctoral robe is adorned with velvet and also is worn with the hood suitably ornamented.

Holders of degrees from foreign universities or religious orders wear the entire academic costumes as decreed by the conferring institutions.

The following list shows the colors that will be found on the hoods worn in the AcadetTtic Procession at the Commencement and the discipline each represents.

The History of the Mace

The mace, generally made of wood and clad in metal, was used as a weapon during the Middle Ages. Later, as more powerful military arms were developed, the mace became a symbol of authority.

During the 12'h century, guards of the English and French kings were the first to bear ceremonial maces. The tradition grew, and by the end of the 16'h century the mace was used by officials in cities and towns throughout England. Today, the ceremonial mace is carried in the British Houses of Parliament, before ecclesiastical dignitaries and in university convocations.

The Florida Atlantic University mace carried in today's commencement procession was designed and handcrafted by FAU art professor William Lattimer and is made of mahogany and silver. The carved staff encircled with silver rings is topped by a silver owl with outspread wings. The design signifies the dignity, determination and wisdom of FAU's mascot, the burrowing owl.

Baccalaureate Degree of Distinction

Florida Atlantic University recognizes superior academic performance by granting baccalaureate degrees of distinction on the recommendation of faculty to students who have earned at least 50 semester hours at FAU with a Grade Point Average (GPA) as follows:

"Cum Laude" for a GPA at FAU of at least 3.50, indicated herein by *

Florida Atlantic University, created in 1961 by act of the Florida Legislature, went into operation in 1964 as the first unive rsity in the nation serving upper-division and graduate students exclusively. The University was dedicated on October 25, 1964, by President Lyndo n B. Jo hnson, becoming one of the few American institutions of higher learning to be so ho nored by a sitting President of the United States. Twenty years later, in 1984, FAU became a four-year university when the first freshman class was admitted.

Today, more than 68,000 men and women are FAU alumni. The stage across which today's graduates will march was donated to the University in 1998 by the FAU Natio nal Alumni Association.

In addition to the original 850-acre campus in Boca Raton, FAU se rves students at locations in Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Dania Beach, Ju piter and Port St. Lucie. The University is organized into nine colleges: the Dorothy F. Schmidt Coll ege of Arts and Letters, the Harriet L Wilkes Honors College, the C hristi ne E. Lynn Coll ege of Nursing, the C harl es E. Schmidt College of Science and the Coll eges of Business, Education, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs.

FAU has fully funded Eminent Scholar C hairs in engineering, business, community education, performing arts, sc ience, social science, nursing, marine biology, philosophy, Holocaust studies, Judaic studies, brain sc ience, and growth management.

Playing an important part in furthering the mission of the University are more than 20 ce nters and institutes dedicated to specific academi c or research pursuits. The Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences, for instance, is known throughout the world for its pioneering research. FAU's Department of Ocean Engineering, the first such program in the country and a State University System Program of Distinction, conducts cutting-edge research funded by the U.S. Navy at the SeaTecl1 ocean engineering research center in Dania Beach.

Other specialized organizations operating within the framework of the University include the statewide Center for Environmental Studies, the Joint Center for Environmental and Urban Problems, the Center for Applied Stochastics Research, the NASA Space Comn1Unications Techn o lo ~:,ry Center, the Florida-Israel Institute, the Stuart James Research Center, the Geographic Information Systems Laboratory, and the Center for Electronic Communication.

University researchers work closely with industry and local, state and federal governments on projects such as jet engine fault detection, bridge load and stabilit y testing, high-temperature superconductor development, electromagnetic testing,

the design of autonomous underwater vehicles, and the planning and implementation of public education programs.

FAU is committed to serving the educational needs of persons of all ages in South Florida through courses offered by FAU Open University & Continuing Education and the FAU Lifelong Learning Society. Every year thousands of area residents take courses, seminars and workshops presented by Open University & Continuing Education, and more than 25,000 men and women of retirement age pursue intellectual stimulation, personal growth and cultural fellowship as members of the Lifelong Learning Society, the largest organization of its kind in the United States.
