With the first Hawaiian Super Prix weekend just around the corner scheduled for Nov. 11- 13, racing fever has not only touched Hawaii, but the Marines and Sailors of Kaneohe Bay, as well. Marines welcomed auto-racing superstar Mario Andretti aboard K-Bay Sept. 29 in "ooh- rah" fashion with a humvee escort around base as they showed him a sample of the way of life for Marines. "It's certainly a privilege for me to come to the Marine base ... and have Marines show me their toys," said Andretti, with a smile, after touring the base all morning long. "It's very special - the opportunity to do something I'd never do any other time." Instead of driving a race car, Andretti tested the turns of Marine tactical vehicles including a humvee, light armored vehicle, and an amphibi- Photo by Cpl. Otto C. Cpl. Otto C. Ple 11-Muete Combat Correspondent Marines and Sailors aboard MCB Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, gathered at the Winward Enlisted Club and Pop Warner Field Saturday, to observe Hispanic Heritage Month with several activities throughout the day. The event was one of several Fiesta '99 celebra- tions held this month by the base Hispanic Heritage Committee to celebrate the cultures of a people brought together from origins across the world, from Spain to South America and Latin America. "We don't want to separate ourselves from other cultures," said 1st Sgt. Maria Colon, chairman of the Hispanic Heritage Committee at MCB Hawaii. "We want to share our cultures with everybody." The day began outside the Windward Enlisted Club with a display of Mexican and Puerto Rican artifacts, a car show with two "souped-up" low- riders and topped off with a variety of Latin meals

that would tantalize any tastebuds. , The two sporting events that followed, boxing and soccer, were representative of famous past times in the Hispanic communities around the world, according to several contributers and participants. "Hispanics have a big history with boxing," said Master Gunnery Sgt. Rick Montoya, the assistant boxing coach for MCB Hawaii. About 100 people came to see members of the Army and Marine base teams fight with one another at the boxing gym Photo by Cpl. Otto C. Pleil-Muete across the street from the Enlisted Club. The MCB Hawaii soccer team, in red, tries to take control of the ball while playing aginst the local soccer team Latino America. Soccer, the second sporting event of the day, brought together members of the intramural teams of MCB Hawaii to play against an amateur, learn from the community. "It's an international sport," said retired Gunnery Sgt. Rick Musquez, coach of the base team. "It brings together the cultures of the different Hispanic communities and everyone all over the world. "The big thing was to get the local Hispanic community involved with the military Hispanic community," said Colon. After a full day of festivities, the evening brought together a few dozen people onto the dance floor to move to the Latin beat. "America is a collage of different people," said Lance Cpl. Angel Ortiz, avionics technician for Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366. "I like to think we (as Hispanics) add a little bit of rhythm and flavor." To many of the Hispanics that gathered together for a full day of festivities, it was a chance to cele- brate and learn a little bit of their heritage. "If you don't know where you came from," said Ortiz, "how do you know where you're going?" Other events scheduled for Hispanic Heritage Month aboard K-Bay include a family meal at Anderson Hall today from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.; a Photo by Cpl. Otto C.
