The scarecrows were designed as a team work activity for aged care residents. Photo supplied Scarecrow buddy LEETON COVID-19 restrictions are encouraging Leeton’s aged care residents to look for creative ways of spending quality time together. Due to the cancellation of the Leeton Show, the show society invited the local community to create a “No Show Scarecrow” buddy to display along the Acacia Avenue fence of the showground. The residents of Southern Cross Care Leeton were inspired to create their own Mother and baby scarecrows, with a variety of materials. The scare- crow came to life over a few weeks with residents encouraged to participate by the Southern Cross Care Lifestyle Team. SCC Leeton Facility Manager Michelle Bullock said the scarecrow building was a great team work activity that brought lots of smiles to staff and residents. “The residents really got involved and made it their own little project. There were a lot of creative minds contributing to the job at hand and I think they are all very proud of their efforts,” she said. The Southern Cross Care Lifestyle team have been busy keeping residents entertained and happy, especially over the past few months during COVID-19 restrictions. “I have a great team here and we all know the importance of our resident’s wellbeing. These types of activities are very important to keep the mind and body in good shape,” Ms Bullock said. Advocacy for health care THE state of health care in rural and regional New South Wales is among five motions to be submitted by Leeton Shire Council to the 2020 Local Government NSW annual Conference in November. The motions, which will be considered for inclusion in LGNSW’s sector-wide policy agenda, call for: • The Rural Fire Service to be recognised as the ‘controlling authority’ for RFS Plant and Equipment Assets, not local councils. • Support for the recently announced NSW parliamentary inquiry into the state of healthcare in rural and regional NSW. • Local residents to have a greater say in the scope and delivery of health services in their local commu- nities than is currently available via the Local Area Health Committee • New South Wales Health to retain ownership of its NDIS and state-owned aged care facilities. • Rural and regional state electoral districts to better reflect ‘communities of interest’ and for the larger districts to be reduced in area. The issue of Rural Fire Service Plant and Equipment Assets is an important one for many rural councils because under the current Auditor-General councils are expected to recognise RFS plant and equipment in their financial statements, regardless of whether they have any control over these assets. In support of Council’s advocacy for access to quality health, aged and disability services in Leeton Shire, three of the motions being submitted advocate action to improve the provision of these services in rural and regional communities. The final motion being submitted by Leeton Shire Council requests LGNSW to advocate for rural and regional state electoral districts to more accurately reflect Local Government Area ‘communities of Interest’ and to be reduced in area to allow for better levels of representation. 4 — Thursday, October 29, 2020 www.narranderaargus.com.au Narrandera Argus Buster’s tribute A GREEN vintage Dodge truck onto the South Australian border named Roger led a procession to make a delivery. through Leeton on Saturday in Ironically, the trucks drove a tribute to charitable truckie through floodways to Cobar Michael “Buster” Ryan tragically following heavy rain. killed in a farm accident. “It was pretty emotional going The convoy tribute was instigat- through Yanco with people hold- ed by the Need for Feed Disaster ing up signs, tooting and waving,” Relief – a cause close to Buster Mr Cotterill said. and Sue Ryan’s heart. “We held a memorial service This was to be the couple’s for Buster at Yanco and his Dodge fifth trip on the hay run so it was truck led the convoy down the named the Buster Ryan Memorial main street afterwards.” Hay Run, and involved 25 trucks Mr Cotterill said the Buster loaded with donated hay from Ryan Memorial Hay Run may Victoria and southern NSW. become an annual event.
