U.S. Figure Skating and SKATING magazine announced that World ice dancing champions Meryl Davis & Charlie White have won the 2011 Readers' Choice Award for Skater of the Year (Michelle Kwan Trophy). The honor goes to an ice dancing team for just the second time in the award's 23-year history (Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto in 2005). "It's such an honor to receive SKATING magazine's Readers' Choice Award," Davis said. "Looking back on the season, Charlie and I could not have asked for anything more. To receive recognition from the readers of SKATING is yet another reason we will be able to look back on the 2010-11 season with pride." Davis and White, both students at the University of Michigan, finished ahead of Alissa Czisny, the Haydenettes and the ICE'Kateers. The longest-tenured ice dancing team in the United States, having skated together since 1997, Davis and White capped an undefeated season by becoming the first U.S. ice dancing team to win the gold medal at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Figure Skating Championships. In addition to their win in Moscow, the team earned titles at Skate America, NHK Trophy, ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and U.S. Championships. "For Meryl and me to be chosen as the readers' choice this year fills me with pride and is humbling at the same time," White said. The full title of the award is the "Readers' Choice Skater(s) of the Year, Michelle Kwan Trophy." The trophy is scheduled to be presented to Davis and White at the 2012 U.S. Championships in San Jose, Calif. Each spring, SKATING magazine readers are asked to vote for the eligible skater in any discipline whom they believe is most deserving of the award, based on the accomplishments of the past season. The Michelle Kwan Trophy, which represents both the sport of figure skating and SKATING magazine, is a one-of-a-kind crystal sculpture designed by Crystal Signatures of Pennsylvania. The Readers' Choice Award is given annually by SKATING magazine, the official publication of U.S. Figure Skating. Voting was open to the public on www.usfigureskating.org, with results becoming final on July 15. • 2013 World Dance Preview with PJ Kwong
The Skating Lesson Podcast Transcript TSL: 2013 World Championships Ice Dance Preview with PJ Kwong Jenny Kirk: Hello, and welcome to The Skating Lesson Podcast! I’m Jennifer Kirk, a former US ladies competitor and a three-time world team member. David Lease: I’m David Lease. I’m a figure skating blogger and a current adult skater. Now today, we are absolutely thrilled to have Canadian journalist and announcer PJ Kwong on the podcast. PJ recently had the temerity to compare Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir to fine cheddar and discuss Meryl and Charlie as being Kraft singles. And we’d love to discuss all of it with PJ today here on our preview of the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships about to be held in London, Ontario. [PJ Kwong joins podcast] Jenny: So, PJ, after Four Continents, with kind of a controversial competition in the dance event with the Americans and the Canadians, you wrote on your blog – you compared the two teams to each other. And you said that the program components and the technical elements were very similar in terms of – it could go either way. But you said not the choreography – you said, “regardless of the result, the difference between Virtue and Moir’s Carmen and Davis and White’s Notre Dame programs are like comparing a fine old cheddar cheese to Kraft slices. Both are yummy, both have their place, but one is definitely finer than the other.” Elaborate. What do you mean by that because I just – I would say Kraft singles and cheddar cheese – I mean, they’re in two different places in the grocery store! Like – I mean that seems a very, you know, big difference.

IS PLEASED TO PRESENT A DAY WITH DAVID WILSON FRIDAY OCTOBER 27 TH 9:00am – 3:00pm Stirling Arena Stirling Ontario Explore the creative side of skating with one of the world’s most talented choreographers. MELANIE BARKER – OFF ICE JODY JONES – STROKING EDGES & TURNS A More Detailed Schedule Will Be Emailed Out. www.stirlingskate.ca David Wilson is the visionary behind many of figure skating’s most celebrated performances of the past twenty- five years. Born and raised in Toronto, David’s competitive career was cut short and redirected by injury. He toured for five years as a chorus and featured performer with Ice Capades, and then he set out to explore the art of choreography on ice. His early work with professionals such as World Champion and two-time Olympic Silver Medallist, Brian Orser, launched him as an unstoppable creative force. By 2007 his versatility produced a rare clean sweep when he created the winning programs for each senior event at the Canadian Championships - Ladies, Men, Pairs and Dance. In 2009 David was honoured with the PSA Paul McGrath Choreography Award. Today, David’s reach is global. On the competitive stage his signature pieces evoke distinct images. Joannie Rochette’s spirited Firebird. Sasha Cohen’s passionate Romeo and Juliet with which she won a silver medal at the 2006 Olympic Games. Alissa Czisny’s gentle and romantic Doctor Zhivago Suite, which resulted in her emotional comeback victory at the 2009 US National Championships. These are just a few programs that are part of the skating community’s collective memory.

Dear Members, Since our last Newsletter, 2009 is in the past and we all hope for a better 2010, even though we have been able to hold our own and have programs that continue to expand. Many of our skaters have had injuries, some families have lost loved ones and some are dealing with illnesses which we hope will be alleviated this year. Our skaters have continued to pre- sent themselves in an outstanding manner and the past two weeks at Nationals was no different; they are to be congratulated for their hard work and perseverance. We had our Board Retreat December 4 & 5, 2009 which provided a great opportunity to look at where we have been, our strengths and weaknesses, where we need to streamline our organization and procedures as a Board and staff, and where we need to go for the future to the benefit of our membership. Thanks to the Board Members and the club staff for their participation, time and talent. A special thanks to Jim McManus for an outstanding job in organizing the logistics with our leader, Rose Snyder, the Board and staff. Extremely well done, Jim!
