It’s incomprehensible that 10 years have passed so quickly! During this decade, I have had the privilege of working with a region of schools populated with people I have come to love. I have also had the joy of working with the AASSA staff who are more like family than employees. I look forward to this final year as Executive Director and will continue for a subsequent year (2018-2019) as a member of the AAS- SA staff and will have the privilege of working with my successor. The Board will announce the new Executive Director in December at the annual Business Meeting in Atlanta as well as the structure for the transitional year. New Offerings atAASSA for the Year Ahead Our goals for the year include the following undertakings and additions: • Surveying school heads for input into AASSA’s future development in preparation for the Board’s September Strategic Planning Session • Providing heads of school with a timely synthesis of educational research through the weekly Marshall Memo and monthly Klingbrief from Columbia Teachers’ College • Promoting our new Consultant Search Service which provides schools the opportunity to inexpensively utilize master teachers within the region as professional development consultants • Sponsoring ever-more school-based institutes (15 are scheduled to date!) • Expanding AASSA’s Google Group listserves to include Admissions Directors and HR directors • Partnering with ISS for AASSA’s and ISS’s Recruiting Fairs in Atlanta and New York • Establishing a centers of excellence database for schools within our region so that other schools may draw upon and visit schools that have cutting-edge programs • AASSA entered a new partnership with CIS (Council of International Schools) which will result in participating in and accessing educational research projects • Monthly Twitter Chats as a new form of ongoing professional development. September 2017 Edition Page 5 Back to TOC Back to TOC AASSA Twitter Chats By: Silvia Tolisano AASSA’s Social Media Coordinator AASSA welcomes you to our new monthly AASSA Twitter Chats. Connect and learn with fellow Internation- al educators from the AASSA region in a “slow” Twitter chat format. Once a month, we will meet on Twitter with a pre-selected topic and up to four guiding questions to spark con- versation, share best practices, resources and professional experiences. You have the entire day to respond to the questions and interact around the topic with fellow AASSA educators. Mark your calendars to join us for the following topics: • September 27, 2017: What do you want to achieve as an International Educator this year? • October 25, 2017: How do you manage expats/locals relations at your International School? • November 29, 2017: Recruitment Season: Should I stay or should I go? The questions for each topic will be released approximately one week prior to each chat. Questions about how to join the Twitter chat? Connect with @AASSA_SA on Twitter.Looking forward to connecting with you and modeling Social Media for networking, professional development, and learning in our schools! September 2017 Edition Page 6 Back to TOC Child Protection Update The Child Protection Task Force has migrated all child protection resources to website of the International Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Please visit http://www.icmec.org/education-portal/ for a wealth of resources such as: child protection policies; international laws; accreditation standards; recruitment of staff and background checks; reporting abuse; and, curriculum and family resources. In addition, the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) is offering an online Child Safeguarding Certificate which takes approximately 6 hours to complete and involves assessments which lead to a Certificate of Completion. The cost is £3,000 for 3 years for a non-member school or £2,500 for ECIS member schools. Please visit https://www.ecis.org/learning/child-safeguarding-certificate for more information. Upcoming Events 2017 AASSA Governance Conference for Board Members and School Heads September 14-16, 2017 Marriott Dadeland Hotel, Miami Conference registration and hotel reservations close on August 29th! We are taking the learning which was launched at last year’s conference to the next level! Our 2017 conference will again feature two of our presenters from last year (Teresa Arpin and Kevin Bartlett), and a presenter new to our region, Myron Dueck. This is NOT a repeat of last year but rather taking the next step from a systemic approach to transformational governance! Transformational Governance from Principles to Practice Transformational Boards work with their leadership and community to co-create key Principles that shape and guide the school’s learning culture. This year’s AASSA Conference will focus on key Principles of great Governance and support participants in mastering the practices that matter in the drive to improve the quality of learning and life in our schools. The conference format will also include interactive whole group sessions that will both frame this unique learning experience and provide opportunities
